POTENTIAL OF REAL-TIME CYLINDER PRESSURE ANALYSIS BY USING FIELD PROGRAMMABLE GATE ARRAYS

In this paper, a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) was used to implement a real-time cylinder pressure analysis. The goal of the project was to improve the accuracy of calculated heat release and center of combustion calculations to enhance the precision of engine control functions. Compared to today’s real-time pressure analysis systems, several additional physical effects were taken into account for this objective. The wall heat transfer was calculated based on the approach published by Hohenberg. A chemical equilibrium with six substances was assumed for the mixture composition and a real-time calculation method was developed. Furthermore, a two-zone model was adapted and implemented for this realtime analysis. The validation of the results and the rating of the improvement in precision were based on GT-SUITE simulation results as an offline reference tool. Compared to state-of-the-art analysis systems, it was possible to reduce the average error of the center of combustion position from 1.6° to 0.5° crank angle (CA) by taking the investigated effects into account. Moreover, it was possible to significantly reduce the time required for the calculation from one complete combustion cycle to 0.2°CA at an engine speed of 3,000 rpm by using a continuous calculation method on the FPGA. This led to an additional improvement of the ability to control the engine, especially under highly dynamic operation conditions.

Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) has become a key issue in automotive product development. The NVH challenges come from two major driving factors, legis1ation and market demands. In both fields the requirements will drastically increase due to tighter legislative noise limits and higher standards of comfort New test procedures will have to be developed in order to get better images of noise emissions and sound quality. This trend is world\\1de valid with different standards of engineering. The paper outlines and discusses the future boundary conditions for diesel engine acoustics and, as a consequence of these constraints, the necessary) technological development stages. The future demands necessitate a more holistic approach of engine development. The acoustic tasks will have to be in a tighter accordance with other engine requirements like exhaust emissions, fuel consumption, engine performance, engine weight, etc. These requirements will lead to new NVH analysis and development tools. One of such future NVH tools, the 'Pass-By Noise Prediction' system is presented and discussed in more detail

The deterioration of the income and employment position of unskilled workers in the OECD since the 1980s is a well-documented fact. The debate about the causes of this development is dominated by two competing hypotheses, “North-South Trade” (“globalisation”) and technological progress. Several empirical methodologies have been used to identify and quantify the importance of these two explanations: factor content analyses, consistency checks, regression analyses and numerical methods. However, no consensus has been achieved so far and there is considerable methodological controversy. This paper uses Jones`s (1965) exposition of the standard trade model as analytical backbone to identify and settle the sources of disagreement, to provide a synthesis of existing results, to derive new insights, and to provide a comprehensive assessment of the aforementioned empirical methodologies.

<P>Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a worldwide heath problem that is characterized by insulin resistance and the eventual loss of 관 cell function. As recent studies have shown that loss of ribosomal protein (RP) S6 kinase 1 (S6K1) increases systemic insulin sensitivity, S6K1 inhibitors are being pursued as potential agents for improving insulin resistance. Here we found that S6K1 deficiency in mice also leads to decreased 관 cell growth, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and impaired placental development. IUGR is a common complication of human pregnancy that limits the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the developing fetus, leading to diminished embryonic 관 cell growth and the onset of T2DM later in life. However, restoration of placental development and the rescue of IUGR by tetraploid embryo complementation did not restore 관 cell size or insulin levels in S6K1-/- embryos, suggesting that loss of S6K1 leads to an intrinsic 관 cell lesion. Consistent with this hypothesis, reexpression of S6K1 in 관 cells of S6K1-/- mice restored embryonic 관 cell size, insulin levels, glucose tolerance, and RPS6 phosphorylation, without rescuing IUGR. Together, these data suggest that a nutrient-mediated reduction in intrinsic 관 cell S6K1 signaling, rather than IUGR, during fetal development may underlie reduced 관 cell growth and eventual development of T2DM later in life.</P>
