A Chromatographic Finger Printing Study of Motor Oil for Forensic Investigation

The motor oil samples were directly analyzed without further sampling procedures to simplify the analysis method and to reduce the sampling times. The resultant chromatograms by FID and NPD showed the characteristic 'Finger Printing' profiles for the oils sampled from the tarmac, but the profiles were changed with the sampling time, particulary in FID responses. NPD responses showed much more reliable 'Finger Printing' profiles, which be used in forensic investigation. It is suggested that, to consider used motor oils forensic 'Finger Printing' investigation, the middle molecular weight fraction(C15-C25) be finger-printed by at least three different selective detectors such as FID, NPD and/or FPD. For this purpose, the MIP simultaneous multi-elenental detection system would be very advantageous.

Polymethylsiloxanes (silicones) were chemically degraded by borontrifluoride etherate, and functional unit derivatives were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) using a fused silica capillary column and a flame ionization detector (FID). the FID detectabilities of the resultant methylfluorosilane monomers were compared with each other and with standard siloxane compounds. Four amine substituted polymethylsiloxane samples are analyzed in the same way. The results show that this method can not only analyze the functional unit composition, but can also estimate the total chain numbers and the degree of crosslinking of sample polymers.
