      • Introduction: Understanding Neo-nomadic Mobilities beyond Self-actualisation

Fabiola Mancinelli ; Noel B. Salazar Academy of Mobility Humanities 2023 Mobility Humanities Vol.2 No.2

In 2018, Noel Salazar presented a paper at the 5th World Humanities Forum in Busan, South Korea, entitled “Moveo Ergo Sum: Mobility as Vital to Humanity and Its (Self)image,” in which he reflected on the existential need for people to move. Moveo ergo sum became the motto for the 2021 Global Mobility Humanities Conference (GMHC), encouraging us to think about the multiple ways in which mobility intersects with the construction of modern subjectivities (Salazar, “Introduction”). The expression recalled a quote from one of Fabiola Mancinelli’s research participants, a digital nomad from the US, whose words and unusual biography as a location-independent entrepreneur read like a declaration of selfactualisation through mobility, the desire to realise her full potential by constantly putting herself outside her comfort zone: “Travel is who I am, and this is not negotiable” (426). This remarkable coincidence was the trigger for us to propose the panel “Understanding Neonomadic Mobilities beyond Self-actualisation” to unpack the mobility-identity nexus as an analytical lens to explore the phenomenon of contemporary nomads.

Vol.4 No.-

The Christian religion was born and nourished within a Jewish milieu and was greatly influenced by Jewish culture. When you read the Old Testament which is a history of the Jewish People you see that the Jews had a special concern for the marginalized peoples in society and offered services to the poor and the weak. The corporal works of mercy as found in the Old Testament are the foundation for the evolution of human services. Old Testament rituals had no internal worth unless they were accompanied with concern for the weak ones of society. Jesus Christ during his lifetime expressed in word and deed this concern for the needs of the poor and the marginalized. In the Mathew Chapter 25(35-37). we read that on the Final Day we will be judged on how we treated our neighbour in need. From the Early Church times up to the Middle Ages Christian believers were very much involved in caring for the needy. For them caring for the poor and the needy was caring for the Hidden Christ. “What you do to the least of those little ones you do unto Me”. In this period the poor and needy were cared for within the local community, and were treated as a person with dignity(Hidden Christ) and respect. All those services were done voluntarily. Around the Middle Ages and on to the 18century, due to pestilence, extensive costly wars, and the Industrial Revolution, poverty became a major social issue, and the manner of offering services to the marginalized ones changed. Rather than community based services segregation and congregation of the poor and the weak became the model of services. Due to the Enlightment christian fervour and devotion began to decrease, you had huge numbers of large segregated institutions being build and staffed by payed carers. In a word the Judea-Christian model of Human Services was dying. With the turn of the twentieth century you saw the birth of many new nations as they won freedom from their old colonizers-you saw the human rights movement lead by Dr. Martin King and the great document of-Gaudium et Spes from Vatican 11. The basic Christian believe-that man is made in Gods image-was bringing about a greater awareness of the dignity of man. Hence the model for Judea-Christian human services is recognizing the dignity of the human person and offering them services in the local community where they will not feel the wound of segregation. Answering the Cry of Humanity is the role of Christian human services.

      • AUSTRALIAN TEACHER TRAINING AT A NEW CROSSROAD

2011 Asia-Pacific Cybereducation Journal Vol.7 No.2

Australian teacher training universities continuously aspire to translate contemporary teacher education research findings into viable classroom teaching practice. However, much seems to be lost in the “translation.” While Australian teachers are considered to be amongst the best in the world, their reputation belies an incompatibility between modern teaching techniques and traditional approaches such as transmission and behaviorism. This paper will discuss current initiatives by the Australian Government to transform what is considered an already “quality” education system into something “better” with a newly developed national curriculum. Expectations to be placed upon Australian teachers in achieving mandates within the new national standardized curriculum will be explored.

β-Caryophyllene, a Dietary Cannabinoid, Protects Against Metabolic and Immune Dysregulation in a Diet-Induced Obesity Mouse Model

        Noel N. Franco-Arroyo,Juan M. Viveros-Paredes,A. Sara M. Zepeda-Morales,Erika Rolda´n,Ana L. Ma´rquez-Aguirre,Jose´ S. Zepeda-Nun˜o,Gilberto Vela´zquez-Jua´rez,Mary Fafutis-Morris,Rocio I. Lo´pez-Roa 2022 Journal of medicinal food Vol.25 No.10

Obesity is an abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat in the body that exacerbates metabolic and inflammatory processes, and impairs the health of afflicted individuals. β-caryophyllene is a natural sesquiterpene that is a dietary cannabinoid with anti-inflammatory properties and potential activity against metabolic diseases. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of β-caryophyllene on C57BL/6 mice using a diet-induced obesity model. Male mice were randomly assigned to the following groups over a 16-week period: (1) standard diet as lean control, (2) high-fat diet (HFD) as obese control, and (3) HFD + β-caryophyllene with β-caryophyllene at 50 mg/kg. Treatment with β-caryophyllene improved various metabolic parameters including increased total body weight, fasting glucose levels, oral-glucose tolerance, insulin tolerance, fasting triglycerides, adipocyte hypertrophy, and liver macrovesicular steatosis. β-caryophyllene also modulated the levels and expression of immune response factors including adiponectin, leptin, insulin, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-a, and Toll-like receptor-4. Our data indicate that chronic supplementation with β-caryophyllene can improve relevant metabolic and immunological processes in obese mice. This protocol was approved by the Institutional Committee for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals from the University of Guadalajara with protocol code CUCEI/CINV/CICUAL-01/2022.

Becoming Cosmopolitan through Traveling? Some Anthropological Reflections

Vol.61 No.1

It is widely believed that a cosmopolitan outlook or disposition.a desirable contemporary form of cultural capital.is acquired largely through experience, especially transnational travel. Anthropologists, among others, have argued that travel is a fundamental aspect of cosmopolitanism. Travel-for-leisure or tourism around the globe could thus be seen as a prime example of cosmopolitanism-as-practice, allowing people to accumulate knowledge about ‘Other’ worlds (including foodways). Global tourism marketing indeed encourages tourists to think that the very act of travel and encounter with cultural ‘Others’ guarantees a broadened cosmopolitan horizon.a fashionable commodity in and of itself.and greater intercultural understanding. This imaginary creates expectations that stimulate local differentiation and the resurgence of (ethnic) identities, but also leads to conflicting narratives of natural and cultural heritage. Tourism discourse often shrewdly exaggerates the power of difference while neglecting and obfuscating the power of commonality. This paper addresses the question whether travelling is really a necessary condition to become cosmopolitan. Travel signifies not only a geographical movement across landscapes and cultures, but also an imaginative journey in which wonderment about those who live, think, eat, and behave differently makes it possible to see the world in a different light. This involves sustained efforts towards nurturing open-mindedness.

Nonlinear MPC of a multi-zone multi-feed LDPE autoclave reactor

Noel C. Jacob,Ramdhane Dhib 한국공업화학회 2012 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.18 No.5

This paper discusses the design of a model-based multivariable nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) formulation for the control of a multi-zone multi-feed LDPE autoclave reactor. Unscented Kalman filtering (UKF) state estimation was employed for online estimation of the plant states and disturbances. In addition to structural plant-model mismatch and noisy process measurements, the closed-loop performance of the UKF based NMPC scheme was investigated under parametric uncertainty in the kinetic rate constants. The closed-loop NMPC performance was also assessed for polymer grade changes, and for disturbance rejection at both open-loop stable and unstable operating regions.
