        Economic Policies with Endogenous Entry and Exit of Plants

        We build a general equilibrium model of industry dynamics and conduct policy experiments. The model is designed to match the entry and exit patterns in the U.S. manufacturing sector. We analyze two policies. First, we consider imposing a firing tax. Both a constant firing tax and a countercyclical firingtaxincreasethevolatilityoftheentryrateandaggregateoutput. Thisfindingcontrastswiththestabilizationeffectsoffiringtaxesinpreviousmodelswith exogenous entry and exit. Second, we consider subsidies to entry costs. Countercyclical entry subsidies stabilize the entry rate and are effective in stabilizing the aggregate output over the business cycle.

        New Analysis of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy for Lithium-ion Batteries

        First of all, we express our deepest sympathies for the passing of Professor Su-Moon Park. In the present paper, an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which Professor Su-Moon Park also used frequently for the investigation of electroconducting polymer, is introduced as a recent evaluation tool for a commercially available lithium-ion battery (LIB). The paper surveys how to design equivalent circuits while explaining physical and chemical phenomena in the LIB and how to get more accurate impedance spectra with varying the measuring temperatures. Additionally, a square current EIS (SC-EIS) technique, which we have suggested, is introduced for the larger LIB system as a promising technique for the future.

      • Earthquake Damage in Sapporo City Examined from InSAR and Paleogeography - 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake -

        The Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake (Mw=6.6), which occurred in the early morning on September 6, 2018, resulted in extremely large number of landslides in Atsuma Town, Abira Town, Mukawa Town in Hokkaido. In addition, ground displacement occurred in a wide area including Kiyota Ward, Sapporo City, and many buildings were damaged. InSAR can extract small displacements of the ground surface over a wide area, regardless of the weather, and can quickly detect where the ground or a building may be damaged. We analyzed SAR before and 2 hours after the earthquake acquired by Sentinel-1 satellite within 24 hours after the earthquake, and identified areas where displacement is estimated to be large. As a result, significant displacements were estimated in Kiyota, Satozuka and Utsukushigaoka in Kiyota ward, Hiragishi in Toyohira ward, and Fushiko in Higashi ward, and it was predicted that the earthquake caused great damage. After SAR analisys, the aerial photograph interpretation and the detailed examination of the field survey were carried out for these areas. The damage situation by the ground displacement were found, checked the paleogeography, and the validity of the SAR analysis results was verified. The displacements area are concentrated on the artificial land where the old river channel and old valley are filled up, and the correlation between the damage and the old topography is considered to be very strong.

        Conceptual Framework of Reverse Retail Internationalization: From the Perspective of Retail Innovation and Retail Format

        Purpose - The purpose of this study is to establish an conceptual framework to explain the mechanism of internationalization behavior being used by recently established retailer in emerging countries. Research design, data, and methodology - The existing research on retail internationalization has focused on global retailers located in advanced countries which have expanded their business to emerging countries. That is, “internationalization from top to bottom”. However, recent years have seen a reversal in this trend, resulting in the emergence of “internationalization from bottom to top” by retailers based in emerging economies. In order to explore this reversal, this study attempts to develop an conceptual framework based on the theories of “innovation” and “retail format”. Results - This study found an conceptual framework which was adopted both a concept of "formula" derived from the theory of retail format and a concept of "production and process innovation" derived from the theory of innovation as a core concept. Conclusions - The conceptual framework provided an understanding of how retailers in emerging countries have gained a competitive advantage over retail companies based in countries with advanced economies. It suggested that innovation that gave these companies a competitive edge was caused by competitive interaction which allowed them to expand to oversea markets.

      • Plant-level Dynamics and Business Cycles

        This paper analyzes the implications of plant-level dynamics in the aggregate economy. We first document the basic properties of plant entry, exit, size, and productivity in the U.S. manufacturing sector. In particular, we show how the pattern of entry and exit varies during the business cycle. Second, we build a model of plant entry and exit. The size and productivity of the entering/exiting plants are determined endogenously. We then extend the model to incorporate aggregate shocks, and examine the policy implications of the model.

      • The Mechanism of New Retail Format Creation in Japanese Eyeglasses Industry : The Case of JINS Inc.

        The objective of this study is to clarify the mechanism of retail format creation from the viewpoint of innovation and competition targeting the process of JINS Inc. which created a retail format in Japan. The innovation of JINS is (1) destructive pricing, (2) simplification of the unclear pricing, (3) the rapidity of making eyeglasses. Since the existing dominant design is deeply ingrained in existing major chain stores, it is difficult to respond JINS’s innovation immediately. JINS defined its original innovation as a competitive advantage and rapidly established a new format in the eyeglasses industry.

This finding contrasts with the stabilization effects of firing taxes in previous models with exogenous entry and exit. Second, we consider subsidies to entry costs. Countercyclical entry subsidies stabilize the entry rate and are effective in stabilizing the aggregate output over the business cycle.

        The Process Model of Retail Format Creation in the Japanese Eyeglasses Industry : The Case Study of JINS Inc.

        Purpose – In recent years, new retail innovations have emerged in the Japanese eyeglasses industry and grown as a retail format. The purpose of this study is to establish the process model of retail format creation by examining how a retailer creates a retail format and under what kind of environmental conditions. Research design, data, and methodology – This study pointed out the weakness of the concept of the retail format in existing research on the retail format in existing research on the retail format variation theory and suggested the concept of “Formula” to analyze an individual retailer. This study categorized the subjects categorize the subjects of retail format creation into four categories, and analyzed JINS which is the retail format leader in the Japanese eyeglass industry. This study used secondary data because it is valid. Results - This research found “product handling skill,” “changes to consumer purchasing patterns,” and “competitive interaction” as environmental factors influencing retail format creation. This study highlighted how JINS adapted those environmental factors to create their original formula and suggested the process model of retail format creation through the JINS case study. Conclusions - This study discussed two theoretical implications and three managerial impressions which were derived from the JINS case study. This study also discussed limitations and further research issues.

      • Case Study of Landslide Monitoring based on GNSS measurement and LiDAR Analysis

        Recently, the application of GNSS measurement and LiDAR analysis at landslide sites has been increasing in Japan. In 2018, a large scale landslide occurred at Agatsu, Fukushima Pref., Japan, during snow-melting period. The field reconnaissance assumed the high speed displacement at site. To investigate the displacement behavior of the ground surface in the whole area, we conducted Image matching analysis using LiDAR-DEM data of two different time periods. Furthermore, we also conducted observation by a statistical analysis based on GNSS measurement in order to observe the mm-order displacement in real time. As result, two areas were detected in this site, which had different trends in the displacement direction and the displacement amount. The cumulative displacement and the displacement velocity of the river facing area were ~4 m and ~28 mm/h as of June 12th 2018, respectively. The failure of the site was forecasted to occur within few days, but GNSS measurement observation showed that the displacement was converged as result from applying emergency countermeasures such as deep wells. The case study shows the effective application of GNSS measurement and LiDAR analysis in monitoring the behavior of the landslide site.
