The nature of urban sprawl in Western Balkan cities

        Zora Živanović,Branka Tošić,Natalija Mirić,Nikola Vračević 서울시립대학교 도시과학연구원 2024 도시과학국제저널 Vol.28 No.1

The paper draws attention to the process of urban growth in the Western Balkans, which is principally reflected in the physical expansion into the surrounding area, leading to the conversion of land into urban fabric – urban sprawl. According to the principles of sustainable development, this process is considered unjustified, especially if it is not a consequence of population growth. The features and the intensity of urban sprawl in the Western Balkans have been determined by mathematical and statistical methods, using data from the Urban Atlas database. The main common features and differences related to urban sprawl in the analyzed cities are determined by several factors, which are discussed in the paper. The purpose of the analysis of the intensity of urban sprawl between 2012 and 2018 is to ensure a better understanding of future processes that pose a potential ‘threat’ in environmental terms, but also of other aspects of sustainable development, relevant for bodies and individuals responsible for urban planning. In accordance with the methodology used, the results of the research confirm the presence of urban sprawl in Western Balkan cities, although it has not been proven that there are features common to all cities for any of the analyzed indicators.

The Impacts of Dimension of Modularity on Service Innovation and Performance

        Miri Kim,Changjoon Lee 제주대학교 관광과경영경제연구소 2018 産經論集 Vol.38 No.1

Purpose - A concept of Innovation in service has been discussed many times, but we did not recognize the process of developing the new facility. As systematic perspective, we need a comprehensive understanding of the relationships based on components, respective interfaces, and substitutability of newly developed components in service architectures. Therefore, this study is to investigate what dimensions of modularity are considered to service innovation and how it formalizes the specific service innovation and its performance. Research design, data, and methodology - This study will be collecting data using open-ended and semi-structured interviews from computer engineers in Korea. The interviewee will have some experiences in developing the operating systems (IT service industry). The data will be conducted with comparative analysis. Results - This study will identify that modular service architecture allows the decomposition of a compound service system or process into smaller sub-systems. Also, we find that what specific factors of modularity will be related to the radical or incremental service innovation. Conclusions - It will contribute to the measures of modularity in service innovation and offer modularity concepts are making it possible to choose what the most critical factors for service innovation are. Moreover, it helps IT service managers to the better understanding of modular in service innovation.

        Miri Park,Young-Kune Lee 한국재난정보학회 2017 한국재난정보학회 논문집 Vol.13 No.4

In this study, a research on disaster countermeasures to strengthen the disaster management field of rural areas. The purpose of this study is to investigate the measures to cope with the disaster in order to enhance the rural disaster management capacity. For this purpose, social and environmental characteristics of the rural area were examined and the characteristics of rural disaster perspective were derived. As for social characteristics, we analyzed the direct and indirect damage of disaster through interviews with residents affected by disaster. In the case of environmental characteristics, the factors that threaten the safety in the rural area were extracted based on the geographical and geographical characteristics of the rural area and quantitative analysis of the difference of the disaster response infrastructure compared with the city was conducted. In addition, it is necessary to further study the priority of disaster prevention in order to apply the disaster prevention method to rural areas.

The Antioxidant Potency of Punica granatum L. Fruit Peel Reduces Cell Proliferation and Induces Apoptosis on Breast Cancer

        Miris Dikmen,Nilgu¨n Ozturk,Yusuf Ozturk 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.12

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is known to possess pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant and anticancer. In this study, we evaluated the antioxidant potency of a methanolic pomegranate fruit peel extract (PPE) and the relation with its antiproliferative and apoptotic effects on MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. Total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of PPE were determined using the Folin–Ciocalteau and the 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl free radical methods, respectively. Phenolic acids present in the extract were characterized by a reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. Cell proliferation was assessed by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide reduction assay. The apoptotic effects were determined by in situ Tdt-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling assay, and Bax/Bcl-2 mRNA expression levels were measured by reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction. The extraction yield as a percentage of plant material was 37.97% (wt/wt), and total phenolic content was 331.28 mg of gallic acid equivalents/g of extract. According to HPLC analysis, the most abundant phenolic acid detected in the extract was ellagic acid. MCF-7 cell proliferation decreased depending on PPE concentration (25, 50, 100, 200, and 300 ㎍/mL) and incubation times (24, 48, and 72 hours). After 48 and 72 hours, the apoptotic cell numbers were significantly increased at 100, 200, and 300 ㎍/mL PPE concentrations. In addition, expression of the pro-apoptotic gene Bax was increased, and that of the anti-apoptotic gene Bcl-2was decreased after 200 and 300 ㎍/mL PPE treatment for 48 and 72 hours. Because PPE reduced cell proliferation and induced apoptosis on MCF-7 cancer cells, we believe that PPE has important antioxidant and apoptotic effects.

      • Rejuvenating effect of ingenol mebutate gel in patients with actinic keratosis

( Miri Kim ),( Jong Sic Kim ),( Ji Hong Lim ),( Sewon Hwang ),( Yuri Woo ),( Hyun Jeong Park ) 대한피부과학회 2017 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.69 No.2

Background: Ingenol mebutate is a newly approved topical field therapy for actinic keratosis (AK). However, there is limited evidence demonstrating the rejuvenating effect of ingenol mebutate application in photodamaged skin. Objective: To evaluate the skin rejuvenating effects of ingenol mebutate gel on photodamaged skin. Methods: Nineteen patients with multiple AKs on the face were treated with 0.015 % gel once daily for three consecutive days, and follow-up was 8 weeks after the treatment. Clinical outcomes and histological analysis were performed. Patients were objectively assessed before and after treatment using clinical photographs by independent dermatologists regarding overall appearance, mottled pigmentation, and wrinkle. Skin biopsy was performed on the clinically affected skin before and after treatment for histological evaluation including epidermal thickness, amount of dermal collagen, and solar elastosis. Results: Eight weeks after the last treatment, clinical improvement was observed in all patients. The investigator’s ratings according to a 5-point scale on the overall appearance, mottled pigmentation, and wrinkle showed moderate improvements (2.6+0.9, 2.7+1.0, and 2.2+0.9, respectively). Histologic examination revealed epidermal hyperplasia, increased dermal collagen thickness, and reduced solar elastosis after treatment with ingenol mebutate. Conclusion: Ingenol mebutate gel showed clinical improvement of photodamaged skin associated with AK by histologically increasing dermal collagen, suggesting the possibility of cosmetic use of ingenol mebutate.
