<P>In this letter, we propose an exact maximum likelihood (ML) criterion based on semidefinite relaxation (SDR) in multiple-input multiple-output systems. Although a conventional SDR criterion for determining whether a symbol is the ML solution exists, its results cannot be guaranteed when noise is present. In place of the conventional criterion's positive semidefinite (PSD) discriminant, we propose a new, exact ML criterion based on the condition that all diagonal values are positive (PDV), a simple characteristic and necessary condition of PSD. The proposed criterion has a lower calculation complexity for testing than does a PSD and can ensure that the ML solution is always satisfactory.</P>

<P><B>Significance</B></P><P>Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the most prevalent movement disorder with no available treatments that can stop or slow down the disease progress. Although the orphan nuclear receptor Nurr1 is a promising target for PD, it is thought to be a ligand-independent transcription factor and, so far, no small molecule has been identified that can bind to its ligand binding domain. Here, we established high throughput cell-based assays and successfully identified three Nurr1 agonists among FDA-approved drugs, all sharing an identical chemical scaffold. Remarkably, these compounds not only directly bind to Nurr1 but also ameliorate behavioral defects in a rodent model of PD. Thus, our study shows that Nurr1 could serve as a valid drug target for neuroprotective therapeutics of PD.</P><P>Parkinson’s disease (PD), primarily caused by selective degeneration of midbrain dopamine (mDA) neurons, is the most prevalent movement disorder, affecting 1–2% of the global population over the age of 65. Currently available pharmacological treatments are largely symptomatic and lose their efficacy over time with accompanying severe side effects such as dyskinesia. Thus, there is an unmet clinical need to develop mechanism-based and/or disease-modifying treatments. Based on the unique dual role of the nuclear orphan receptor Nurr1 for development and maintenance of mDA neurons and their protection from inflammation-induced death, we hypothesize that Nurr1 can be a molecular target for neuroprotective therapeutic development for PD. Here we show successful identification of Nurr1 agonists sharing an identical chemical scaffold, 4-amino-7-chloroquinoline, suggesting a critical structure–activity relationship. In particular, we found that two antimalarial drugs, amodiaquine and chloroquine stimulate the transcriptional function of Nurr1 through physical interaction with its ligand binding domain (LBD). Remarkably, these compounds were able to enhance the contrasting dual functions of Nurr1 by further increasing transcriptional activation of mDA-specific genes and further enhancing transrepression of neurotoxic proinflammatory gene expression in microglia. Importantly, these compounds significantly improved behavioral deficits in 6-hydroxydopamine lesioned rat model of PD without any detectable signs of dyskinesia-like behavior. These findings offer proof of principle that small molecules targeting the Nurr1 LBD can be used as a mechanism-based and neuroprotective strategy for PD.</P>
Obtaining Behavior Patterns through Data Logs

Diary studies have been used as a way to record experiment participant behavior and data. However, diary studies may not be suited for certain activities, like television viewing, which are passive in nature. In this study, we walk through our attempt of a data-driven approach in collecting behavioral data with television viewing as a case study. We conducted a 14 day experiment with 14 households. Through a data logger installed at each house, we take quantitative data in IR log data, Bluetooth data, brightness data and IPTV packet data and combine it with qualitative data collected from in-situ chatbot surveys. We have gained valuable insights from the collected data, which may have not been available if collected through diary logs.

Classical music and the genre itself has been slowly losing its attractiveness to the masses. It can be argued that this decline has been caused by the high entry barrier of this particular genre of music. Not only that, it is deemed by the general audience that the barrier is even more difficult to overcome. In an attempt to solve this issue, we have looked to the chatbot to provide a solution. With the assistance of a friendly concierge chatbot, we attempt to lower the barrier for the general user and see how the chatbot can be affective in doing so. We conduct a user study to figure out at which exact points the chatbot can be help to the quintessential “normal” audience, and implement a chatbot based on the findings.

An elongation band (EB) is used to improve the physical strength of older adults. However, the evidence of its effect on the upper limb is a deficiency. This study investigated the effectiveness of EB exercises on upper limb function in the elderly. Participants were divided into two groups: EB (n= 16) and control (n= 14). The EB group performed exercises in a sitting position using an EB while the control group performed active stretching exercises without bands. The exercise regimen consisted of four shoulder joint movements. Each group performed the exercise for 20 min per day, 5 days per week over a period of 2 months. Measurements included upper limb muscle strength, shoulder joint range of motion, and grip strength. Measurements were performed at baseline, and 1 and 2 months after the intervention. Analysis of covariance was used to compare differences between the groups. The EB group demonstrated significant increases in muscle strength (upper trapezius, deltoid, middle trapezius muscle), shoulder joint range of motion (right shoulder flexion, internal rotation, external rotation, left shoulder joint extension), and grip strength. In conclusion, EB exercises increased upper limb muscle strength, shoulder joint range of motion, and grip strength in older adults.

An optimal gear ratio generation program is developed, which calculates the optimal gear ratio automatically in design of the automatic transmission. This program is designed to provide the planetary gear ratio which satisfies the design requirements such as shift range, step ratio, top and bottom gear ratio and rear gear ratio. It is expected that the optimal gear tooth ratio generation program will be used in development of a new automatic transmission.
