Reduction of efficiency droop in GaInN/GaN light-emitting diodes with thick AlGaN cladding layers

GaInN/GaN multiple-quantum-well light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with 0.4 µm-thick AlGaN cladding layers and two quantum wells (QWs), designed for investigating the origin of efficiency droop, are demonstrated to have a lower efficiency droop than typical GaInN/GaN LEDs with 5 QWs. Considering the much less electron leakage over the active region, and the larger carrier density due to the smaller active volume of the LED with AlGaN cladding layers than those of the typical LED, it is suggested that the dominant mechanism responsible for the efficiency droop is electron leakage rather than the Auger recombination which scales with the cubic power of the carrier density.

Foot binding was a Chinese custom widely practiced between the 10th century and the 19th century, involving breaking down and tightly binding the feet of young girls, in order to change the shape and size of their feet. In Chinese history, women with tiny feet were considered both beautiful and desirable, and foot binding had therefore become fashionable. According to the records of Qing China, Korea and Japan, bound feet remained the standard of feminine beauty among the Han Chinese and evolved into a symbol of resistance to their Manchurian rulers. Also in this period, feet were regarded as the most intimate part of a woman. Artistic representations of a woman’s feet, even with shoes or socks on, were considered risqué and inappropriate. Reflecting this cultural change, female feet were often hidden. This fact led to the decline of Mao Nü, a Daoist female immortal whose main feature was showing feet. Images of Mao Nü abounded in Chinese art throughout the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), before suddenly dropping off in the Qing dynasty. This research suggests that the main reason for this change is closely linked to the practice of foot binding. The iconology of Mao Nü declined when it no longer suited the social milieu. In Japan, on the other hand, where there is no cultural injunction against female feet, artists continued to depict Mao Nü. This fact strengthens the theory that Mao Nü’s disappearance from Chinese art was associated with the rise of foot binding and the Qing social prohibition against showing bare female feet.

China has already entered the aging society and is predicted to become a super-aged society in 2020. The recent studies identified that the elderly has more interest in ‘Aging-in-Place’ which emphasizes deinstitutionalization since welfare facilities such as care homes and silver towns have separated the elderly from their local communities where they used to live in. The aim of this research is to propose a promising way for smart housing services who support the elderly’s living in their homes, China. This research is to investigate the elderly’s life and to identify their demands on housings for implementing such smart services. The elderly’s living in apartments in Luoyang city, China, were investigated through interviews using a questionnaire survey. The results show that smart housing services should be provided to support the elderly’s health, safety, leisure activities, comfortable living, and social relationships sustainably. In addition, such smart housing services should be intuitive since the elderly need to use easily smart services for their autonomous life in their homes. The smart housing services should be developed in the direction of enhancing the elderly’s healthy and desirable life, and lessening their discomforts due to aging.

China has faced various elderly problems relating to housing and health care services because many people in the Chinese society became over sixties. The previous studies show that the concept of Aging-In-Place has not been established in the housing market although the Chinese government presented "a proposal of December 5" emphasizing the adoption of Aging-In-Place in the development of housing for the elderly in China. This research is to investigate the current states of the elderly housings and their demand on smart homes in China. In addition this research is to analyze carers" difficulties and desires in assisting the elderly as a supplementary data. The questionnaire survey was done with fifty old people and fifty carers such as families and friends in apartment complexes to identify their demands respectively on future housings, smart homes. The result show that most respondents do not want to leave their home and move into care facilities as they ages. That is, most of the elderly prefer the realization of Aging-In-Place to care homes, thus the development of smart homes enabling the elderly"s autonomous living in their own housings should be desirable and encouraged. In conclusion, this research will propose a future direction on smart homes for the elderly in China.

Phase-locked loops (PLL) based on the synchronous reference frame (SRF-PLL) have recently become the most widely-used for grid synchronization in three phase grid-connected inverters. However, it is difficult to study their performance since they are nonlinear systems. To estimate the performances of a SRF-PLL, a canonical small-signal linearized model has been developed in this paper. Based on the proposed model, several significant specifications of a SRF-PLL, such as the capture time, capture rang, bandwidth, the product of capture time and bandwidth, and steady-state error have been investigated. Finally, a noise model of a SRF-PLL has been put forward to analyze the noise rejection ability by computing the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) of a SRF-PLL. Several simulation and experimental results have been provided to verify and validate the obtained conclusions. Although the proposed model and analysis method are based on a SRF-PLL, they are also suitable for analyzing other types of PLLs.

The ploid level of 46 germplasms of Elytrigia Desv. were observed and determined with the microscope, which are from 21 countries and areas that United States of America offered. The results showed these accessions were grouped into three distinct ploid levels including diploidy, tetraploidy and hexaploidy in E. intermedia, E. repens, E. elongata, E. pontica, E. caespitosa, E. juncea, E. alatavica. There were 24 diploid accessions, 1 tetraploidy and 1 hexaploidy in E. intermedia; 4 diploid accessions and 3 tetraploidy in E. repens, 6 texaploidy and 1 hexaploidy in E. elongata, 1 diploidy and 2 tetraploidy in E. pontica, all of E. caespitosa, E. juncea and E. alatavica were diploidy.
Solution to Some Key Problems of Self-exciting Electronic Ballast

Self-exciting electronic ballast, of small size, and low cost, and high power, with no stroboscopic effect, no noise, is widely used in the general lighting market. This paper describes the cause of high switching loss of self-exciting electronic ballast, based on its operational principle; then, to reduce the switch temperature and increase the reliability of the product, the drive circuit has been improved, to achieve soft-switching. The theory analysis, simulation and experimental result prove the feasibility and compatibility of this new method in practice. Finally, the design procedure and winding method of the self-exciting current transformer are introduced.
The Design and Realization of a Popular Science Long Corridor Based on 3D Stereo Technology

Through the design and technical realization of a popular science long corridor based on 3D stereo technology, three hot applications of 3D technology including 3D folding technology, 3D holographic imaging technology and 3D printing technology were introduced in the paper. The three techniques as a whole in the popular science long corridor display the method to decrease the realization cost of the popular science long corridor. The interactive part of the two-dimensional animation was added into the popular science long corridor to reflect truly the effect of the computer technology integrating application.
