In this paper, in order to realize the image enlargement with high performance, we propose a new enlargement method, which restores high-frequency components lost in the interpolation-based methods, by using high-frequency esti-mation. The estimation is based on the eigenspace method proposed by Amano et al..The proposed enlargement method can generate lost high-frequency components by using pairs of low-and high-frequency components of the original image, and is referred as back projection for lost high-frequency components (BPLHF). Experimental results show the proposed method can achieve promising enlargement.
Generation of panoramic image based on planar image features using side-vie win-vehicle camera

In this paper, we propose a method for generation of panoramic image suitable for a building wall surface using the side-vie win-vehicle camera. In the proposed method, alignments and geometric normalizations are performed on the basis of planar features of the images. This allows no need for rigorous calibration for camera setting, such as camera postures and positions. Therefore, the proposed method is comparatively tolerant of imaged is tortions which a rise from the movement of a car. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides promising panoramic image.

For recognition of decorated characters through existing optical character recognition system (OCR), structure extraction of the decorated characters is required. Omachi et al. proposed a structure extraction method for these characters. However, characters including both thin lines and thick lines simultaneously tend to fail the extraction of structure. To overcome the performance in Omachi’s method, we have proposed another method based on graph spectral decomposition. In the previous work, we showed applicability of the proposed method to wider range of decorated characters. However, selection criterion among decomposed components for obtaining good results have not been clarified. In this paper, we propose a new criterion to select components in the graph spectral decomposition framework for structure extraction. Experimental results show the validity of the criterion.
Degraded Document Image Binarization Combining Local Statistics

In this paper, an efficient binarization algorithm for degraded document images is proposed. The proposed method contains two procedures: background estimation and foreground detection. The background is estimated by median filtering. The rationality is the characters can be assumed as irregular pixels. Text regions are detected by background subtraction and local variance calculation, and then local linear transform is performed to the detected text regions. Finally, a naive thresholding algorithm, ex. Otsu’s method, is performed to obtain the binary result. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves promising results.
Development of A Microchannel Catalytic Reactor System

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the applicability of microreactors for use in catalytic reactions at elevated temperatures. Microchannels were fabricated on both sides of a silicon wafer by wet chemical etching after pattern transfer using a negative photoresist. The walls of the reactor channel were coated with a platinum layer, for use as a sample catalyst, by sputtering. A heating element was installed in the channel on the opposite surface of the reactor channel. The reactor channel was sealed gas-tight with a glass plate by using an anodic bonding technique. A small-scale palladium membrane was also prepared on the surface of a 50-㎛ thick copper film. In the membrane preparation, a negative photoresist was spin-coated and solidified to serve as a protective film. A palladium layer was then electrodeposited on the other uncovered surface. After the protective film was removed, the resist was again spin-coated on the copper surface, and a pattern of microslits was transferred by photolithography. After development, the microslits were electrolitically etched away, resulting in the formation of a palladium membrane as an assemblage of thin layers formed in the microslits. The integration of the microreactor and the membrane is currently under way.

A new sound source tracking method in 3 dimensional space using state space modeling approach and particle filter as a state estimation method has been proposed. Not only TDOA (Time Difference Of Arrival) as our previous works including by the authors, but also using power ratio of two sound signals from microphone pair are effectively used in formulation of state space model. Simulational experiments consisting of 1) fundamental tracking with four microphones and 2) human head tracking in car cabin have been conducted with efficient performance in SNR 20dB environment with about 3,000 number of particles.
A Behavior of the Diffuser Rotating Stall in a Low Specific Speed Mixed-Flow Pump

The flow instability in a low specific speed mixed-flow pump, having a positive slope of head-flow characteristics was investigated. Based on the static pressure measurements, it was found that a rotating stall in the vaned diffuser occurs at about 65% flow rate of best efficiency point (BEP). A dynamic Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) measurement and the numerical simulations were conducted in order to investigate the flow fields. As a result, the diffuser rotating stall was simulated even by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the calculated periodic flow patterns agree well with the measured ones by DPIV. It is clarified that a periodical large scaled backflow, generated at the leading edge of the suction surface of the diffuser vane, causes the instability. Furthermore, the growth of the strong vortex at the leading edge of the diffuser vane induces the strong backflow from the diffuser outlet to the inlet. The scale of one stall cell is covered over four-passages in total thirteen vane-passages.
