Fluoride Content in Indian Tea (Infusions and with Milk)

Audrey Madonna D'Cruz,Shankar Aradhya 대한예방치과학회 2012 International Journal of Clinical Preventive Denti Vol.8 No.3

Objective: To estimate the fluoride (F) content in prepared tea infusions and to know the effect of milk addition (varying concentration), increasing brewing time and squeezing on F content of tea. Methods: An experimental study was undertaken to determine the fluoride content in tea infusions prepared from commercially available tea in India. A total of 30 prepared samples of tea (various methods of tea preparation in India) and 1 water sample were analysed for F concentration using the F ion selective electrode method. The results were subjected to statistical analysis using the paired Student’s t-test at 95% confidence interval. Results: The F content in tea infusions with 5 mins brewing ranged between 3.37-6.2 mg/L. Addition of 10 mL milk had no effect whereas addition of 25 mL milk significantly decreased the F concentration. Increasing the brewing time by 10 mins had no effect. However, 20 mins of brewing significantly decreased the F concentration in tea infusions. It was also noted that squeezing had no effect on the F concentration in tea infusions. Conclusion: Tea consumers especially in naturally occurring high F areas should be cautious enough to limit their tea consumption to avoid the long term cumulative effects of F on health.

CURVES AND VECTOR BUNDLES ON QUARTIC THREEFOLDS

        Arrondo, Enrique,Madonna, Carlo G. Korean Mathematical Society 2009 대한수학회지 Vol.46 No.3

In this paper we study arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM for short) vector bundles $\varepsilon$ of rank k $\geq$ 3 on hypersurfaces $X_r\;{\subset}\;{\mathbb{P}}^4$ of degree r $\geq$ 1. We consider here mainly the case of degree r = 4, which is the first unknown case in literature. Under some natural conditions for the bundle $\varepsilon$ we derive a list of possible Chern classes ($c_1$, $c_2$, $c_3$) which may arise in the cases of rank k = 3 and k = 4, when r = 4 and we give several examples.

Awareness Regarding Hospital Waste Management among Interns of a Private Dental Institution in Mangalore, Karnataka, India

Amith Holenarasipur Vasanthakumar,Audrey Madonna D'Cruz 대한예방치과학회 2013 International Journal of Clinical Preventive Denti Vol.9 No.3

Objective: Waste produced in the course of health care activities carries a higher potential for infection and injury than other types of waste. Inappropriate and inadequate handling of health care waste may have serious public health consequences and a significant impact on the environment. The objective of the present study was to assess the awareness regarding hospital waste management among the interns of a private dental institution in Mangalore, Karnataka, India. Methods: A cross sectional questionnaire survey was carried out on 100 interns of a dental college. A self designed, close ended questionnaire containing 10 questions was developed in English language to assess the knowledge of dental interns regarding hospital waste management. Results: The response rate was 100%. About 70% of the study participants were aware that hospital waste was generated by health care establishments, research facilities and dental laboratories. About 94% of them were aware of color coding of different type of biomedical waste. About 60% of them had the opinion that an extracted tooth belongs to the category of infected material. Majority of them had the opinion that expired pharmaceuticals should be returned to the pharmacy for disposal. Around 40% of them were aware that human anatomical waste should be disposed in a yellow container. About half of them opined that waste bags must be closed when they are three quarter full. Conclusion: The results of the present study revealed that the dental interns had satisfactory knowledge regarding management of biomedical waste in a private institution in Mangalore.

        Oil Pulling and Oral Health

Amith Holenarasipur Vasanthakumar,Audrey Madonna D'Cruz,Ravi Vasudev Shirahatti,Harsha Hari Nair 대한임상예방치과학회 2011 International Journal of Clinical Preventive Denti Vol.7 No.3

Objective: “Oil pulling or oil swishing”, in alternative medicine, is a traditional Indian folk remedy that involves swishing oil in the mouth. Oil pulling is an age-old process mentioned in “Charaka Samhita” and Sushrutha's “Arthashastra”. It's a widely recommended procedure in Ayurveda. Methods: 10 subjects in the age range 19-21 years, having fair-poor levels(scores 1.8-5.0) of plaque according to “Patient Hygiene Performance” (PHP) index performed Oil Pulling along with their other oral hygiene measures for 45 days, using Refined Sunflower Oil. Their Plaque and gingival scores were assessed at baseline, 15, 30 and 45 days by modified PHP and Gingival indices. The results were subjected to Friedman's test and Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: The mean PHP value at baseline of 2.12±0.55, reduced to 1.07±0.42, mean Gingivitis score of 1.08±0.32 at baseline reduced to 0.73±0.29 after 45 days. The differences were found to be statistically significant. Conclusion: Oil pulling is having dental benefits. Hence this holds a chance to be added to other oral hygiene measures. Further longitudinal studies with larger sample size are recommended.

Filling to Extraction Ratio of Teeth in the Rural Dental Satellite Clinics of South Coastal Karnataka, India : A 3 Year Retrospective Study

Amith Holenarasipur Vasanthakumar,Audrey Madonna D'Cruz 대한예방치과학회 2013 International Journal of Clinical Preventive Denti Vol.9 No.1

Objective: To assess the ‘filling to extraction’ ratio in the rural satellite dental clinics of AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, India. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted and the treatment reports of 13 dental satellite clinics from January 2009 to December 2011 were retrieved. The number of restorations was compared to the number of teeth extracted to get the ‘filling to extraction’ ratio. Results: The lowest filling to extraction ratio of 1:0.39 was recorded for the dental satellite clinics at Konaje. The highest filling to extraction ratio of 1:1.54 was noted for Nada. Only one rural satellite dental clinic had an unfavourable ratio of more than 1:1. Conclusion: More number of fillings than extractions are done in the rural satellite dental clinics which is a positive sign of eliminating dental diseases to a great extent in rural India.

Effects of Low Grade Axial Loading on Discogenic Low Back Pain: A Case Report

Chang, Duncan,Boby, Arantxa,Madonna, James International Academy of Physical Therapy Research 2018 Journal of International Academy of Physical Ther Vol.9 No.4

Low back pain (LBP) is the most common reason for seeking physical therapy (PT) care. Recent studies suggest that axial loading can have a positive impact on the intervertebral disc by improving its tensile strength. Further, whole body vibration (WBV) appears to improve spinal muscle relaxation. Therefore, this case study describes the use of axial loading using a mini-trampoline in a female with chronic LBP. This case report is a single subject design. This patient is a 29-year-old female with a six-month history of low back pain following a motor vehicle accident. MRI found herniated discs at L4 and L5, clinical tests were positive for pain in the L4 and L5 dermatome and myotome the slump test was positive for neural tension, and LBP was constant at 4-6/10 over the past four months. She received axial loading exercises using a mini-trampoline and performed six sessions that were, scheduled twice a week for three weeks. Her Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) score improved from 40% at the time of her first visit to 22% at her final visit. Pain measure on the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) after the first treatment was 7/10, and her pain after the final treatment was 0/10. These changes in the pain scores are clinically significant and exceed the minimal clinically important difference (MCID). This patient had a significant improvement in her pain using the NPRS and the ODI. This case study suggests that axial loading may be an effective treatment for some individuals with discogenic chronic low back pain.

Dentigerous Cyst Associated with Bilaterally Impacted Permanent Mandibular Canines : A Report of a Rare Case

Urvashi Ashwin Shetty,Srikala Bhandary,Audrey Madonna D'Cruz 대한예방치과학회 2014 International Journal of Clinical Preventive Denti Vol.10 No.4

Dentigerous cysts (also known as follicular cysts) are odontogenic cysts of developmental origin associated with the crown of unerupted or partially erupted or impacted teeth. Accumulation of fluid between the reduced enamel epithelium and the tooth crown is suggested as the possible etiopathogenesis of this particular cyst by most authors. However in addition to the developmental origin, few authors have suggested an inflammatory origin to the formation of dentigerous cyst. The dentigerous cysts are commonly associated with impacted canines and third molars. However, bilateral occurrence of the cyst is rare. Here, the authors report a case of dentigerous cyst involving bilaterally impacted mandibular canines in a non-syndromic 12 year old male patient which was surgically enucleated.
