Pharmacological findings of an Indian traditional Ayurvedic herbal formulation Amritaristo

In this present study Indian traditional Ayurvedic herbal formulation Amritaristo has been studied to assess the general pharmacological effect on mice. The drug showed no significant activity on the neuropharmacological test models experimented. The increased pentobarbital sleeping time was considered related with hepatic metabolism of pentobarbital. The formulation exhibited a nonsignificant reduction of gastrointestinal motility, and devoid of any acute diuretic activity. The tested drug revealed antidiarrhoeal activity on castor oil-induced model, whereas on magnesium sulphate-induced model no effect was observed. Anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive and diuretic activities of Amoora cucullata Roxb.

The crude methanolic extract of the leaves of Amoora cucullata Roxb. was investigated for its possible anti-inflammatory activity using carrageenin induced rat paw edema model and cotton pellet implantation method in rat. The extract was also studied for its antinociceptive activity using acetic acid induced writhing model in mice. At the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight, the extract showed significant anti-inflammatory activity in both models. At the same doses, the extract also significantly reduced the number of acetic acid-induced abdominal constriction (writhing) in mice. The crude extract also showed significant diuretic activity in albino mice.
Pharmacological studies on roots of Achyranthes aspera Linn

The crude methanol extract of the roots of Achyranthes aspera Linn. was investigated for its possible antinociceptive, diuretic and neuropharmacological activities in animal models. At the dose of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight, the extract showed a significant antinociceptive effect in acetic acid induced-writhing in mice comparable to that produced by diclofenac sodium, used as standard drug. The crude extract produced significant diuretic effect at the dose of 500 mg/kg of body weight comparable to that produced by furosemide, used as standard drug. The extract also potentiated significantly the pentobarbital induced sleeping time in mice; decreased the open field score in open field test, decreased the number of hole crossed from one chamber in the hole cross test and decreased the head dip responses. The obtained results provide a support for the use of this plant in traditional medicine and its further investigation.

The Sundarbans mangrove forest has a rich biodiversity of flowering plants and many of these have been used in traditional medicine although the flora remains comparatively uninvestigated scientifically. Xylocarpus granatum, Xylocarpus moluccensis and Excoecaria agallocha methanolic extract showed a central nervous system depressant activity on the hole cross and open field test at 800 mg/kg dose level. The most significant depressant activity was observed in Xylocarpus granatum followed by Xylocarpus moluccensis and Excoecaria agallocha. There was no depressant activity observed in the models for Sarcolobus globosus. Further studies are required to confirm the activity and to explain the mechanism.
Neuropharmacological study of some Ayurvedic medicinal plants

Water extract (kwath) of six different widely used Ayurvedic medicinal plants were tested in mice for possible neuropharmacological efficacy. In the present experiments it was observed that a number of plant tested causes a significant level of Central Nervous System (CNS) depression, in that it significantly decreased the spontaneous Motor activity, and also lowered the exploratory behavior of the treated animals. Terminalia chebula (HAA), Terminalia bellerica (BHA), Emblica officinalis (AA), Piper longum 1. (PP). exhibited depressant action of on the CNS. Apart from them a mild to moderate degree of depression was evident as a consequence of administration of Zingiber officinale Rosc (SUT), Piper nigrum L. (MRC). However, none of the plant tested did not exhibit significant effects on pentobarbital induced narcosis, and this indicated that the sedating effects of the drug was not associated with the risk of fatal consequences on overdose.
A psycho-pharmacological study of BRHAT VATACINTAMANI RASA classical ayurvedic drug

The psycho-pharmacological effect of BRHAT VATACHINTAMANI RASA (BVC) an Ayurvedic preparation was investigated, both in animal and clinical models. It was observed that BVC possess a sedative or quitening effect in that it significantly decreased the spontaneous motor activity, and also lowered the exploratory behavior of the amphetamine treated animals. This was further evident by increase in climbing out time and taming effect on animal in isolation induced aggression test. Apart from very high dose it seems have little effect on pentobarbital sleeping time and narcotic analgesic test. The drug BVC increases performance of the animal in forced locomotor test. The effect of VATACHINTAMANI RASA on clinical study was not significant.
Pharmacological study of 'treenoponchomul'-an Ayurvedic diuretic preparation

The pharmacological effects of an Ayurvedic diuretic drug 'Treenoponchomul' (TPM) was investigated in animal model. The pharmacological actions of the test drug along with that of the components thereof, on the Central Nervous System (CNS) were studied. The drug under study TPM showed little effect on the CNS, the same can not be said about the components. The most prominent CNS depressant effect was observed with Saccharum officinarum Linn. (EE) in that it lowered the spontaneous motor activity as well the exploratory -behavior of the animals. An exploration retarding effect of moderate degree, was evident with Imperata cylindrica Beauv. (UU), and Phragmites maxima Blatter & McCann (NN). Although the test drug did not alter the normal locomotor and/ or exploratory behavior of the treated animals, it did significantly (p<0.01) lower the locomotion of the amphetamine induced hyperactive animals. TPM along with its components (especially Desmostachya bipinnata Stapf. Root, KU), significantly reduced the gastro-intestinal motility of the treated animals (p<0.01). The test drug and its components lowered the body weight of the treated animals, on being administered chronically (30 days), with EE being the only exception.
