Enhancement of nuclear radiation shielding and mechanical properties of YBiBO3 glasses using La2O3

        Issa, Shams A.M.,Ali, Atif Mossad,Tekin, H.O.,Saddeek, Y.B.,Al-Hajry, Ali,Algarni, Hamed,Susoy, G. Korean Nuclear Society 2020 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.52 No.6

In this study, nuclear radiation shielding and rigidity parameters of Y (0.1-x)B0.6Bi1.8O3La2x glassy system were investigated in order to determine it's suitability for use as nuclear radiation shielding materials. Therefore, a group of bismuth borate glass samples with La2O3 additive were synthesized using the technique of melt quenching. According to the results, the increase of the La2O3 additive increases the density of the glass samples and the mass attenuation coefficient (μm) values, whereas the half-value layer (HVL) and mean free path (MFP) values decrease. The effective atomic number (Zeff) is also enhanced with an increment of both mass removal cross section for neutron (ΣR) and absorption neutron scattering cross section (σabs). In addition to the other parameters, rigidity parameter values were theoretically examined. The increase of La2O3 causes some other important magnitudes to increase. These are the average crosslink density, the number of bonds per unit volume, as well as the stretching force constant values of these glass samples. These results are in concordance with the increase of elastic moduli in terms of the Makishima-Mackenzie model. This model showed an increase in the rigidity of the glass samples as a function of La2O3.

        Masoud, M.S.,Mohamed, G.B.,Abdul-Razek Y.H.,Ali A.E.,Khairy F.N. 대한화학회 2002 대한화학회지 Vol.46 No.2

The thiazolylazo compounds and their Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes of barbituric acid, uracil, thiouracil, citrazinic acid, chromotropic acid, gallic acid, pyrogallol and salicylic acid were pre-pared and characterized by NMR , IR and the effect of pH on the electronic absorption spectra . The mode of ionization, the electronic transitions and the dissociation constants were discussed. The stoichiometries of the complexes were of 1:1, 2:1 and 3:2 (M:L). The copper complexes are of isotropic ESR spectra (except that of gallic acid which showed a complicated one) and are of magnetically diluted behaviour with orbital con-tribution. Detailed DTA data were obtained and discussed.

Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) inhibitory constituents from the aerial parts of Tradescantia spathacea Sw.

        Vo, Q.H.,Nguyen, P.H.,Zhao, B.T.,Ali, M.Y.,Choi, J.S.,Min, B.S.,Nguyen, T.H.,Woo, M.H. Elsevier 2015 Fitoterapia Vol.103 No.-

Inhibitors of protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) are promising agents for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. The bioactivity-guided isolation led to the separation of two new compounds, (+/-)-tradescantin (13) and tradescantoside (16), along with fourteen known compounds (1-12, 14, and 15) from the aerial parts of Tradescantia spathacea Sw. (Commelinaceae). Their chemical structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods as well as by comparing with those reported in the literature. The isolated compounds (1-16) were then examined for their inhibitory activity toward PTP1B. The results indicated that compounds 2, 6, 8, and 12 possessed potent inhibition with IC50 values of 7.82+/-0.79, 6.80+/-0.89, 4.55+/-0.92, and 6.38+/-0.14μM, respectively. Kinetic study of compounds 2, 6, 8, 12, 13, and 16 was conducted and the structure-activity relationships of the isolated compounds (1-16) were also discussed herein. To the best of our knowledge, all the isolates were separated for the first time from this plant.

      • Multi-model-based interactive authoring environment for creating shareable medical knowledge

        Ali, T.,Hussain, M.,Ali Khan, W.,Afzal, M.,Hussain, J.,Ali, R.,Hassan, W.,Jamshed, A.,Kang, B.H.,Lee, S. Elsevier Science Publishers 2017 Computer methods and programs in biomedicine Vol.150 No.-

Objective: Technologically integrated healthcare environments can be realized if physicians are encouraged to use smart systems for the creation and sharing of knowledge used in clinical decision support systems (CDSS). While CDSSs are heading toward smart environments, they lack support for abstraction of technology-oriented knowledge from physicians. Therefore, abstraction in the form of a user-friendly and flexible authoring environment is required in order for physicians to create shareable and interoperable knowledge for CDSS workflows. Our proposed system provides a user-friendly authoring environment to create Arden Syntax MLM (Medical Logic Module) as shareable knowledge rules for intelligent decision-making by CDSS. Methods and materials: Existing systems are not physician friendly and lack interoperability and shareability of knowledge. In this paper, we proposed Intelligent-Knowledge Authoring Tool (I-KAT), a knowledge authoring environment that overcomes the above mentioned limitations. Shareability is achieved by creating a knowledge base from MLMs using Arden Syntax. Interoperability is enhanced using standard data models and terminologies. However, creation of shareable and interoperable knowledge using Arden Syntax without abstraction increases complexity, which ultimately makes it difficult for physicians to use the authoring environment. Therefore, physician friendliness is provided by abstraction at the application layer to reduce complexity. This abstraction is regulated by mappings created between legacy system concepts, which are modeled as domain clinical model (DCM) and decision support standards such as virtual medical record (vMR) and Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine - Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT). We represent these mappings with a semantic reconciliation model (SRM). Results: The objective of the study is the creation of shareable and interoperable knowledge using a user-friendly and flexible I-KAT. Therefore we evaluated our system using completeness and user satisfaction criteria, which we assessed through the system- and user-centric evaluation processes. For system-centric evaluation, we compared the implementation of clinical information modelling system requirements in our proposed system and in existing systems. The results suggested that 82.05% of the requirements were fully supported, 7.69% were partially supported, and 10.25% were not supported by our system. In the existing systems, 35.89% of requirements were fully supported, 28.20% were partially supported, and 35.89% were not supported. For user-centric evaluation, the assessment criterion was 'ease of use'. Our proposed system showed 15 times better results with respect to MLM creation time than the existing systems. Moreover, on average, the participants made only one error in MLM creation using our proposed system, but 13 errors per MLM using the existing systems. Conclusion: We provide a user-friendly authoring environment for creation of shareable and interoperable knowledge for CDSS to overcome knowledge acquisition complexity. The authoring environment uses state-of-the-art decision support-related clinical standards with increased ease of use.

Effect of Chilling Temperature of Carcass on Breast Meat Quality of Duck

        Ali, M.S.,Yang, H.S.,Jeong, J.Y.,Moon, S.H.,Hwang, Y.H.,Park, G.B.,Joo, S.T. Elsevier 2008 Poultry science Vol.87 No.9

<P>An experiment was carried out to investigate whether variations in chill water temperature affect muscle shortening and meat quality in duck breast. Three chill water temperatures were applied to duck carcasses at 20 min postmortem for 30 min, including in ice water at 0 degrees C, in cold water at 10 degrees C, and in water at 20 degrees C. Results revealed that carcass temperatures were different (P < 0.05) at 50 and 120 min of postmortem with lower temperatures at the 0 degrees C treatment (P < 0.05). The pH over the first 24 h postmortem was not different (P > 0.05) among treatments, with the exception of 50 min postmortem. The pH of breast meat in the 0 degrees C treatment was higher (P < 0.05) than that of 20 degrees C treatment at 50 min postmortem (just after chilling). No other differences (P > 0.05) in pH existed among treatments. Drip loss, cooking loss, and moisture content were not different for breast meat samples that were chilled at different temperatures. Differences (P < 0.05) were found in CIE (L, a, and b) color values. Lightness (L) increased, whereas redness (a) decreased as the chill water temperature increased. Lower yellowness (b) was found in the breast meat samples at the 10 degrees C chill water temperature. However, shear force, sarcomere length, and protein solubility were not different (P > 0.05) among the breast meat samples chilled at different chill water temperatures. It may be concluded that chilling duck carcasses at different temperature ranges from 0 to 20 degrees C did not influence muscle shortening or meat quality, except in regard to breast meat color.</P>

Anti-tumor Promoting Activity of Some Malaysian Traditional Vegetable (Ulam) Extracts by Immunoblotting Analysis of Raji Cells

        A. M. Ali,L. Y. Mooi,K. Yih Yih,A. W. Norhanom,K. Mat Saleh,N. H. Lajis,A. M. Yazid,F. B. H. Ahmad,U. Prasad 한국생약학회 2000 Natural Product Sciences Vol.6 No.3

The extracts of Carica papaya (flower), Barringtonia macrostachya (leaves), Coleus tuberosus (tuber), Mangifera indica (fruit skin) and Eugenia polyantha (leaves) showed strong in vitro anti-tumor promoting activity when assayed using Raji cells (Mooi et al., 1999). The anti-tumor promoting activity of the crude extracts was further analyzed by immunoblotting analysis of Raji cells carrying Epstein-Barr virus genome. The expression of early antigens diffuse (EA-D) and early antigens restricted (EA-R) was determined by performing western blotting of treated Raji cells with human sera of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients. All the plant extracts were shown to be able to suppress both EA-D and EA-R.

Anti-cancer Effect of Hyoscyamus muticus Extract via Its Activation of Fas/FasL-ASK1-p38 Pathway

        Amer Ali Abd El-Hafeez,Hala Mohamed M. Marzouk,Mohamed A. A. Abdelhamid,Hazim O. Khalifa,Tamer H. A. Hasanin,Ahmed G. K. Habib,Fatma Mahmoud Abdelwahed,Fatma M. Barakat,Eslam M. Bastawy,Eman M. B. Abd 한국생물공학회 2022 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.27 No.5

Hyoscyamus muticus L. is a traditional medicine used as antispasmodic and sedative. Herein, we aimed to determine the phytochemical constituents and for the first time its anti-cancer activities. The phytochemical constituents of the different extracts were evaluated by calorimetric methods. The anti-cancer activities of the extracts were tested against leukemia, breast, renal, and prostate cancers cell lines. 4, 6-Diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining, flow cytometric analysis, knockdown of ASK1, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were evaluated to clarify the mechanism of action. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of wide range of phytoconstituents. Hyoscyamus muticus methanolic extracts (HMME) showed the highest anti-cancer activities against leukemia, breast, renal, and prostate cancers as compared to ethanol and aqueous extracts. Specifically, HMME exerted cytotoxic effect against the MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468 triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell lines with IC50 values of 8.75 and 7.25 μg/mL, respectively. Mechanistically, DAPI staining and flow cytometric analysis revealed that HMME induces apoptosis via the death receptor, FAS, but not the mitochondrial pathway. Moreover, ASK1 and p38 were rapidly activated in response to HMME, and knockdown of ASK1 by a small interference of RNA specific to Ask1 attenuated p38 and caspase-3 activation and suppressed apoptosis, implying that HMME-induced apoptosis relies on the ASK1-p38-caspase-3 pathway. Furthermore, we confirmed that cellular ROS generation was a critical mediator in HMME-induced apoptosis because the ROSscavenger N-acetyl cysteine significantly decreased the phosphorylation of ASK1 and HMME-induced apoptosis. Our results confirmed HMME cytotoxic effects in TNBCs via ROS-dependent activation of the Fas/FasL-ASK1-p38 axis.
