We studied iron release from ferritin by irradiating the visible light, and then followed ferritin-mediated lipid peroxidation in the rod outer segment (ROS) fraction of the porcine retina. In the presence of several phosphorus compounds such as ADP and ATP, iron release from ferritin at pH 7.0 could be induced by irradiation of the visible light to the reaction mixtures. Furthermore, iron release from ferritin in the presence of ADP depended on the incubation time and the visible light irradiation. Moreover, we investigated lipid peroxidation level in the ROS fraction by two independent assay systems including the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and ferrous oxidation/xylenol orange (FOX) methods. The visible light induced ferritin-mediated lipid peroxidation in the ROS fraction in time- and irradiance-dependent manners. In the dark condition, iron release and lipid peroxidation were not observed. Iron release from ferritin by irradiating the visible light may play an important role in the etiology of phototoxic injuries in vivo.
Magnetism and Superconductivity in RbxFe2−ySe2

We have performed zero-field muon spin relaxation measurements in single-crystalline samplesof superconducting (SC) RbxFe2−ySe2 (Tc = 29 K) and non-SC RbxFe2−ySe2 in order to elucidatewhether there is difference in the magnetic states between SC and non-SC systems. In the SCsample, no temperature dependence of the muon spin polarization was observed at temperaturesbelow 40 K while a decrease in the spin polarization was observed in the non-SC sample withdecreasing temperature. This suggests that a new magnetically ordered state seems to develop inthe non-SC sample.

In order to understand the reality of the constitutional review system, it would be necessary to analyze not merely the modalities of constitutional review by the judicial branch, but also the integrated government structure as a whole, while taking into account the function and practices of various prior check systems. If the function of control of constitutionality is understood merely as ex-post review by the judicial court, it would lead to an impression that constitutional review is not always actively exercised in Japan and that the Supreme Court is not fully performing the function of constitutional review. However, regarding the Government bills which account for the majority of the bills submitted to the Diet, prior strict legal scrutiny on a bill by the Cabinet Legislation Bureau is required. Moreover, the Diet member`s bills also receive a prior check by the Legislative Bureau of the House which is an assisting body. Therefore, it would not be proper to criticize the practices of constitutional review by the Supreme Court as judicial passivism in the sense that it is not fully performing the function of constitutional review. Rather, it should be considered that there are few opportunities for invoking the ex-post review system effectively, because the prior constitutionality examination by the assisting bodies of the democratic institutions are effectively functioning.
Effect of denosumab on renal function in women with osteoporosis evaluated using cystatin C

Objectives: To investigate renal function during denosumab therapy using the estimated glomerular filtration rate based on cystatin C (eGFRcys) which is more accurate than creatinine (eGFRcr) for renal function. Methods: Bone mineral densities (BMDs) of lumbar spine and hip regions, eGFRcys, eGFRcr, creatinine clearance (Ccr), and serum total homocysteine (S-Hcy) were measured during 2-year denosumab therapy in 53 women with osteoporosis naïve to anti-osteoporosis drugs (new group) and 64 women who were switched from long-term bisphosphonate treatment to denosumab therapy (switch group). Results: There were no significant differences in age, eGFRcr, Ccr, eGFRcys, and S-Hcy levels at baseline between the groups. BMDs in the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip increased significantly after 2-year denosumab therapy in both groups. eGFRcr decreased in the switch group, and Ccr decreased in both groups; however, eGFRcys and S-Hcy levels did not change significantly in either group. To investigate the causal factors associated with the decrease in eGFRcr and Ccr, multiple regression analysis was performed in all patients. Denosumab initiation within 3 months after fracture and eGFRcr or Ccr at baseline were independent factors for the decrease in eGFRcr or Ccr during the 2-year denosumab therapy. Decline in creatinine-based renal function could be reflected by increased muscle mass during the ongoing recovery from fracture. Conclusions: Renal function was preserved in all patients, including those in the switch group during denosumab therapy. Creatinine-based renal function should be cautiously interpreted during denosumab therapy in patients with recent fractures.
A Study on Effects of Artificial Structures on Bryophyte Diversity in Urban Greenery

It is important to consider urban parks and greenery not only from the viewpoint of amenity or aesthetics but also from the viewpoint of biodiversity. In this study, we focused on bryophytes (mosses), and analyzed how existence of artificial structures in urban greeney, such as concrete curbs and stone walls, affect species diversity of bryophytes. Kyoto Gyoen in Kyoto City, western Japan, was selected as the study site. In consideration of kinds of substrates on which bryophytes grow, microhabitats of Kyoto Gyoen were divided into ten types including concrete curbs and stone walls. In each type of microhabitats, we selected the area where bryophyte diversity was highest, and established a quadrat for bryophyte flora survey. Our results showed that the number of bryophyte species and growth forms and the value of diversity indices on concrete curbs or stone walls were higher than the averages of those. The bryophyte species were divided into the four groups by TWINSPAN as follows: Group A (epiphyte species), Group B (rocky species), Group C (roadsides, grassland or forest species), and Group D (waterside species). Bryophytes classified into Group B (rocky species) were mainly recorded on concrete curbs or stone walls. It was considered that the existence of artificial structures (concrete curbs and stone walls) provided favorite habitats for the bryophytes classified into Group B (rocky species), which mainly grows on concrete or rocks, and enhanced species diversity of bryophytes in Kyoto Gyoen.
