The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the noise level and the noise source for domestic trains. We measured and analyzed the interior noise, the rolling noise and the engine noise at Honam line(Seodaejeon-Jangseong) for passenger and power cars. The noise level is below 69㏈A for Seamaeul PMC(Powered Motor Car) coachs, below 65㏈A for Seamaeul and Mukungwha coachs, over 80㏈A for the driver"s room of PMC and diesel-electric locomotives.

The diverse demands on the public transportation are increasing such as the punctuality like a train and the flexibility like a bus. In order to satisfy such requirements, the bimodal tram as a new public transportation system was developed, which can run on either dedicated road or conventional road. The bimodal tram is equipped with the pneumatic disk brake system to reduce the speed safely. In the present study, the configuration and characteristics of brake system for the bimodal tram was introduced. Braking performance calculation data satisfied EU and Korean regulations for brake force distribution. In order to verify brake force distribution the design pressure and the experimental pressure of brake cylinders were compared.

The bimodal tram with a pivoting joint has difficulty in making a sharp turn because of their long body and wheel base. Therefore, applying AWS(all wheel steering) to the bimodal tram is effective to reduce the turning radius. In the present study, HILS(hardware in the loop simulation) system for the AWS ECU test was developed, which consists of the components used in real vehicles. The data obtained from the HILS system also satisfied the dynamics simulation without any error on the operation control.

Articulated vehicles which have a pivoting joint allowing the vehicle to rotate more easily are difficult to turn the curves because of their long length. In order to review operational safety, turning characteristics related to geometric design should be investigated when articulated vehicles run on the road which can be interfered with other vehicles. The vehicles to review the turning characteristics are the normal articulated bus in Seoul with FWS(front wheel steering) and new bimodal tram with AWS(all wheel steering). Steering characteristics and geometric design were investigated such as turning radius, offtracking, swept path width and swingout. The results were reviewed with respect to the standards of vehicle safety and road design.

Squeal noise is generated by railway vehicles transversing tight curves. This squeal has always been noticed as one of the most disturbing noise sourecs of railway systems. At present we cannot predicted squeal noise that is influenced by a large number of dependent parameters. In this study, we performed structural analysis to find out the frequency of the wheel and also measured squeal noise at Seoul subway line 1, line 2, line 4 for domestic EMU(Electrical Multiple Unit).

The train travels on the track and thus the rear wheels precisely follow the paths of the front wheels. On the contrary in the vehicles running on the road like automobiles buses and trucks the front wheels try to drag the rear ones toward them and across the inside of the curve. Off-tracking is defined as the radial offset between the path of the centerline of the front axle and the path of the centerline of the following axle. In the case of the bimodal tram with AWS(all wheel steering) the off-tracking decrease but the rear swing-out values increase because of the rear steering at the reverse phase angle. Thus in order to determine the swept path width maximum road width at the minimum turning radius off-tracking and swing-out should be considered for the bimodal tram. In this paper trajectory simulations were carried out for the various condition such as front steering front and rear steering and suppression of swing-out to optimize the swept path width.

As the brake control valve of freight car, there are sliding valve and diaphragm one. In this study, we measured and analyzed pneumatic characteristics of brake system of the freight car by using real train experiment. The difference of the release time appears in the freight car incorporated with sliding and diaphragm valve respectively. We adapted quick release valve to reduce the difference of the release time and also found that this valve is useful for the purpose.
