Since many people in Korea know more than one language, bilingual aphasia is an important line of research in clinical and theoretical neurolinguistics. Nowadays we meet many people who speak other languages along with Korean, who are immigrants from foreign countries, especially from China. Differential recovery of language affected by an aphasic deficit is documented. In the present work, we introduced a patient with bilingual aphasia who showed different recovery patterns in Korean and Chinese. A 66-year-old man was presented with language disturbance and right hemiplegia. On past medical history, he had received a hematoma evacuation through burr-hole due to left basal ganglia hemorrhage. After the event, he showed nearly global aphasia in Korean, but he showed minimally preserved language function on comprehension and fluency in Chinese. This result suggests that aphasia in bilingual subject may show different pat-terns of recovery between two languages.

작물의 수확량이나 병 저항성을 증가시키는 형질전환 식물체 개발은 세계 식량 부족을 해결하는 좋은 방법이다. 하지만 항생제나 제초제의 사용은 형질전환 작물의 안전에 대해서 일반 사람들의 심각한 우려를 초래한다. 본 연구에서는, 아그로박테리움을 이용한 동시 형질전환 방법을 이용하여 한국의 밀 재배종인 ‘조경밀’의 유전자인, 고분자 글루테닌 서브유닛[high molecular-weight glutenin subunit (HMW-GS)] Dx5가 삽입된 마커프리 형질전환벼를 개발하였다. 각각 Dx5 유전자와 하이그로마이신(HPTII) 저항성 유전자만으로 구성된 두 종류의 발현 카셋트(Two expression cassettes)를 독립적으로 아그로박테리움 EHA105에 도입하였고, Dx5와 HPTII가 도입된 각각의 EHA105 아그로박테리움을 3:1 비율로 혼합하여 벼 캘러스에 접종하였다. 66개의 HPTII 저항성 형질전환체 중에서 벼 게놈에 Dx5와 HPTII가 모두 삽입된 2개의 형질전환 라인을 획득하였다. Dx5와 HPTII가 벼 게놈에 도입된 것을 Southern blot을 통해서 다시 확인하였다. 또한, semi-quantitative RT-PCR을 통해 형질전환벼 T1 세대 종자의 밀 Dx5 전사여부를 확인하였고 결국, Dx5 유전자만을 가지는 마커프리 형질전환벼를 T1 세대에서 선발할 수 있었다. 본 연구 결과는 두 종류의 발현 카셋트를 사용한 아그로박테리움 동시 접종 시스템이 마커프리 형질전환벼를 생산하기 위한 효과적인 전략이 될 수 있음을 보여준다. Development of transgenic plant increasing crop yield or disease resistance is good way to solve the world food shortage. However, the persistence of marker genes in crops leads to serious public concerns about the safety of transgenic crops. In the present paper, we developed marker-free transgenic rice inserted high molecular-weight glutenin subunit (HMW-GS) gene (Dx5) from the Korean wheat cultivar ‘Jokyeong’ using Agrobacterium-mediated co-transformation method. Two expression cassettes comprised of separate DNA fragments containing only the Dx5 and hygromycin resistance (HPTII) genes were introduced separately into Agrobacterium tumefaciens EHA105 strain for co-infection. Each EHA105 strain harboring Dx5 or HPTII was infected into rice calli at a 3: 1 ratio of EHA105 with Dx5 gene and EHA105 with HPTII gene expressing cassette. Then, among 66 hygromycin-resistant transformants, we obtained two transgenic lines inserted with both the Dx5 and HPTII genes into the rice genome. We reconfirmed integration of the Dx5 and HPTII genes into the rice genome by Southern blot analysis. Wheat Dx5 transcripts in T1 rice seeds were examined with semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Finally, the marker-free plants containing only the Dx5 gene were successfully screened at the T1 generation. These results show that a co-infection system with two expression cassettes could be an efficient strategy to generate marker-free transgenic rice plants.

Distribution change of potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), during 30 years in Korea

The potato tuber moth (PTM, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller)) is a serious pest of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) plants in the field in regions with warm temperate to tropical climates, and of tubers stored under ambient temperatures post-harvest. Although PTM can be a minor to serious pest depending on the area and year, this pest is getting more and more serious to potato fields in Korea according to accidental surveys. Son (1979) represented 12.5℃ of average annual temperature as northern limit of distribution where corresponding to Youngdeog, Dalseong, Boseong and Jindo regions. Soon after, Choi and Park (1980) reported that the northern limit of PTM distribution coincided with -8℃ isotherm for average annual minimum temperature of January. In recent years, concerns on PTM occurrence and damage to potato are increasing due to climate change resulted in global warming. We carried out an extensive survey of PTM distribution using sex pheromone traps at 24 sites across the nation in 2009. As a result, we confirmed that the northern limit of PTM distribution climbed to southern Gyeonggi and middle Gangwon regions from Gyeongbuk and Chungbuk regions indicated by Choi and Park (1980). Hereafter, we are trying to investigate why drastic going northward of PTM happened in Korea. Here is one presumption that a sudden rise in average temperature has occurred during 30 years, from 6.34℃ in 1973 to 7.62℃ in 2007, especially around Daegwallyeong area where is a typical highland with 800 m high.

최근 사물인터넷에 대한 국제적 관심과 각종 비즈니스 모델에 대해 연구들이 다양화 되고 있다. 이에 하나의 프로젝트 수행을 통해 IoT 기술에 대한 응용기술을 우리 실생활에 어떻게 적용하는가를 보다 깊이 관찰하여 우리 인간이 편리하고 안전하게 삶을 영위할 수있는가를 의료분야에서 찾아보고 앞으로 노인 인구가 급증하고 건강에 대한 관심이 고조되고 있는바 IoT기술을 보다 효과적으로 사용하고 노인환자들의 위치기반 안전관리시스템을 통해 위험지역 접근을 사전에 예방할 수 있는 체계를 연구하였다. IoT시스템의 실효성과 향후 보다 발전된 응용기술이 어떤 것이 있는지 살펴보고 그 대응방안을 제시하고자 한다.

Three soluble enzyme fractions (F-Ⅰ, F-Ⅱand F-Ⅲ)that hydrolyze phophoinositides were separated from soybean sprouts by using Matrex green gel column chromatography. Among the three phosphatidylinositol (PI)-specific phopholipsase C (PLC) enzymes, only the third fraction (F-Ⅲ) was able to hydrolyze phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP_(2)) as well as phosphatidylinositol (PI) and phosphatidylinositol phosphate(PIP) as substrates. The F-Ⅰand F-Ⅱ fraction only showed enzymatic activities for PI and PIP. The PIP_(2)-hydrolyzing PLC protein, F-Ⅲ, was partially purified using the chromatographic steps of the Matrex green gel, phenyl Toyopearl, Matrex orange gel, Mono S cation exchange, and superose 6 gel filtration columns. The molecular weight of the F-Ⅲ protein was estimated to be about 64 kDa on SDS-PAGE. The protein showed immunocross-reactivity with a polyclonal antibody that was prepared against the X and Y motifs of animal PLC enzymes, the conserved catalytic domains. Ca^(2+) ion critically affected the PIP_(2)-hydrolyzing PLC activity of F-Ⅲ protein, representing maximal activity at 10㎛ Ca^(2+) concentration. The PIP_(2)-hydrolyzing PLC activity of the protein was also significantly increased by sodium deoxycholate (SDC) from 0.05 to 0.08%. However, the activity was greatly reduced above the concentration, and no activity was detected at 0.3% SDC. In addition, the protein exhibited maximal PIP_(2)-hydrolyzing PLC activity at pH, in the range of 6.5-7.5.

<P>Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells found in several adult tissues; they have the capacity to differentiate into mesodermal, ectodermal, and endodermal tissues in vitro. There have been several reports that MSCs have therapeutic effects in a variety of diseases. Therefore, using a cell labeling technique, monitoring their temporal and spatial migration in vivo, would be useful in the clinical setting. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)--tracking of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)-labeled cells--is a noninvasive technique for determining the location and migration of transplanted cells. In the present study, we evaluated the influence and toxicity of SPIO (ferumoxides) labeling on multiple differentiated MSCs. To evaluate the influence and toxicity of ferumoxides labeling on differentiation of MSCs, a variety of concentrations of ferumoxides were used for labeling MSCs. We found that the cytoplasm of adherent cells was effectively labeled at low concentrations of ferumoxides. Compared with unlabeled controls, the ferumoxides-labeled MSCs exhibited a similar proliferation rate and apoptotic progression. The labeled MSCs differentiated into osteoblasts and adipocytes in an identical fashion as the unlabeled cells. However, chondrogenesis and neurogenesis were inhibited at high concentrations of ferumoxides. Our results suggest the effective concentration for ferumoxides use in tracking MSCs.</P>
Overview of Conductor Production for ITER Toroidal Field Magnet in Korea

<P>The ITER toroidal field (TF) conductor is made up of superconducting Nb<SUB>3</SUB>Sn and copper strands assembled into a multistage, rope-type cable inserted into a conduit of butt-welded stainless steel jacket sections. For the ITER Project, the Korean Domestic Agency (KODA) took the responsibility of the procurement of 27 superconducting conductors for the ITER TF magnets. After concluding the Procurement Arrangement (PA) with the ITER International Organization in May 2008, KODA has been implementing the PA through four major industrial contracts: (1) Nb<SUB>3</SUB>Sn strand, (2) cable, (3) stainless steel jacket sections, and (4) jacketing. Prior to the production of conductors required for the TF coils, one 760-m-long copper dummy conductor and one 100-m-long superconducting conductor were fabricated for manufacturing process qualification. As of June 2013, 16 TF conductors were successfully manufactured. The full-size conductor performance tests in the SULTAN facility yielded very high performance. This article describes the technical requirements of the TF conductor and how KODA has been manufacturing the conductors with a high-level quality assurance/quality control system. It also presents the results of acceptance tests, including those of the SULTAN test.</P>
