Visitor Motivation, Expectation and Satisfaction of Local Cultural Event in Sabah

Local cultural events have been one of the most important components of tourism nowadays. This event seen as an instrument for tourism development and can be part of tourism destination marketing. The result of having the events can be seen from economic, sociocultural, local businesses and political dimensions. The effectiveness of organising such event can be evaluated from the perspective of the visitor and tourist. The purpose of this study is to investigate various expectations and satisfactory of visitor of cultural events and activities organised. Moreover, this study also evaluate the visitors’ satisfactory towards the facilities that was provided during the event as well as the activities organised. The analysis utilised a sample collected during Tamu Besar Kota Belud, Sabah involving 141 respondents with self-administered survey. The result of the study reveals that the main motivation of the visitor to participate is to experience the cultural event. In general, the event has met the visitor expectation and they are satisfied of the facilities and activities provided during the event. The findings of this study will be used to assist the cultural event organiser to enhance the visitor’s experiences towards staging the cultural event.

The Significance of Bajau Laut Community As A Cultural Tourism Product In Semporna, Sabah

Semporna is a gateway for divers to the famous diving sites in the world. The primary motive tourists visits Semporna is for their diving activities at Sipadan and Mabul not knowing that the Bajau's in Semporna has an only one of its kind culture. The intention for developing product for the Bajau's people or "sea-gypsy" is to analyze and expose their unique Bajau's community lifestyles besides it will enhance the economic activities of the Bajau's. This will positively help to enhance and increase the cultural contribution within the development of the cultural tourism relationship: the tourists, cultural tourism operators and the cultural entrepreneurs. Proper management of cultural tourism provide the conservation community into the sustainable development by placing the local communities achieve better socio-economic benefits. The purpose of this exploratory research is to identify potential and issues through cultural uniqueness by promoting Bajau's Laut community. A semi-structured interview with the district officer, local community leaders and tourists has been conducted and secondary data obtained from the previous studies will be applied to this research. Furthermore, the idea of developing Semporna for their Bajau's Cultural Tourism can help to shift the tourism development concentration from the west coast to the east -coast of Sabah. This could be the alternative for the marine tourism to cultural tourism guaranteeing the survival of these revenue-generating cultural heritage assets will play an important role in the well-being of future generations.

Many researches on the rural communities over the years in Sabah have left a large impression that there are varieties of participation in ecotourism from handicraft making to owning an eco-lodge, Many locals spoken to are eager to be included in various levels of participation in ecotourism projects. Most of them have the notion that ecotourism may improve their current living conditions. There are many levels of participation ranging from decision-making to manipulative participation. The existence of participation in an ecotourism project sometimes does not reflect the true meaning of local community participation especially if it is a manipulative participation and the locals do not benefit or are bearing the costs of ecotourism development. The articles' primary intent is to explore the issues and context of success of both local community participation and ecotourism site. It defines success from the stakeholders' (i.e. government & NGOs, business, community and tourists) point of view. The article concludes that success could not be attributed to effort made by a single entity but by many. Since local community participation is a sub-set of the ecotourism site, it contributes largely to the success of ecotourism site. These indicators are very useful in assessing the dimensions of success for the local community participation and ecotourism site in Sabah.

The Impacts of Modernization Towards Ethnic Food Practices

Food modernization has become a key issue in maintaining local food traditions of a particular ethnic food. Current modernization has led to ethnic food increasingly lost to the ages. New generation of a particular ethnic does not know how to prepare their traditional ethnic foods. There do also some of the generation not know their own ethnic food traditions and never eat and taste them. With a variety of foods available in the market such as those offered by the food service industry, generation now prefer to enjoy fast food that in line with the current modernization rather than the traditional food. Therefore, this study was undertaken to examine the impacts of modernization of food towards ethnic practices. By using respondents from the three main ethnic natives group in Sarawak, the study found that most of these ethnic received a very large impact on the modernization of their traditional food. The implications of these findings for the impacts of modernization are discussed. This study contributes to the literature by expanding the ethnic food gastronomy in Malaysia.
