A secondary statistical analysis of data from a study to develop a self-rating scale for assessing the learning processes of self-care ability for diabetes prevention is reported (Takizawa, 2006). The data of 227 participants consisted of 3 groups: urban inhabitants, rural inhabitants, and company employees. The differences among the groups are presented. Significant differences were found in scores obtained from the subscales of “Approach Families/Community” and “Adequacy of Rest.” A path analysis revealed the following same learning procedure among the groups: “Interest” → “Understand” → “Explore and Determine” → “Implement, Monitor” → “Approach Families/Community.” Statistically, there are no differences in path coefficients among the 3 groups, which suggest a possibility that the preceding stage of the learning process progressed without regard to urban or rural areas or labor status. Many more subjects are required for an examination of the generalized results of this research, including cross-cultural influences. Notes on Korean Chrysomelidae, part 2

A list of 113 Korean chrysomelid beetles is presented, of which 3, Gonioctena suwai, Phratora koreana and Apophylia shirozui n. spp. are described as new to science and 16 are recorded from Korea for the first time. A key is given to the Korean species of the genus Gonioctena CHEVROLAT. Further 43 species are enumerated from Cheju-do (Quelpart) Is., where only 18 specices of the family have been known to occur.

Purpose Although pharmaceutical excipients do not affect the membrane permeation of active drugs, some have been shown to influence absorption-regulating factors. However, limited information is currently available on the effects of pharmaceutical excipients on membrane permeation via passive transcellular transport, which is the main membrane permeation route of many drugs. Methods We herein focused on polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) (K90), which is used as a diluent and binder in pharmaceutical formulations, and examined its effects on passive transport via the transcellular route in the rat jejunum using the in vitro sac method. Results The membrane permeation of β-naphthol, a passive transcellular marker, was increased by the co-existence of 0.02 w/v % PVP (K90). However, PVP (K90)-induced increases in membrane permeation were not observed following a pre-incubation with PVP (K90). Therefore, PVP (K90)-induced increases in membrane permeation may be attributed to a drug-excipient interaction, but not a mucosal membrane-excipient interaction. Conclusion PVP (K90) affected membrane transport via the transcellular route in the rat jejunum. However, since the coexistence of PVP (K90) did not influence membrane protein expression levels or cause membrane lesions, the absorption of active drugs may be regulated by the optimal application of PVP (K90).

Based on chrysomelid beetles collected in Taegu Basin in July, 1979, a list of 97 species are presented. Twenty-nine species including 11 unnamed ones are new to Korea and a new species, Sphaeroderma leei n. sp. is described. Host plants are given for 45 species in Korea. In conclusion JOLIBET's lists of Korean Chrysomelidae are supplemented with a few recent works by authors.
Impact of Air Pollution on Allergic Diseases

The incidence of allergic diseases in most industrialized countries has increased. Although the exact mechanisms behind this rapid increase in prevalence remain uncertain, a variety of air pollutants have been attracting attention as one causative factor. Epidemiological and toxicological research suggests a causative relationship between air pollution and the increased incidence of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and other allergic disorders. These include ozone, nitrogen dioxide and, especially particulate matter, produced by traffic-related and industrial activities. Strong epidemiological evidence supports a relationship between air pollution and the exacerbation of asthma and other respiratory diseases. Recent studies have suggested that air pollutants play a role in the development of asthma and allergies. Researchers have elucidated the mechanisms whereby these pollutants induce adverse effects; they appear to affect the balance between antioxidant pathways and airway inflammation. Gene polymorphisms involved in antioxidant pathways can modify responses to air pollution exposure. While the characterization and monitoring of pollutant components currently dictates pollution control policies, it will be necessary to identify susceptible subpopulations to target therapy/prevention of pollution-induced respiratory diseases.
