Eccrine poroma mimicking keratoacanthoma on the forehead

Eccrine poroma is a common, slow-growing solitary adnexal tumor originating from the intraepidermal ductal portion of the eccrine sweat duct. It can occur anywhere on the body where eccrine gland exists and most commonly found on the sole and palm. It usually occurs in middle-aged or elderly adults as a solitary, asymptomatic flesh-colored or pink nodule. A 63-year-old man visited our clinic with a solitary, 1 cm sized erythematous nodule with central umbilication on the forehead which had developed 1 year ago. Initial impression was keratoacanthoma, considering the characteristic clinical features and site of lesion. A punch biopsy was performed for accurate diagnosis. Histologic findings indicated the broad anastomosing bands of monomorphic cuboidal cells with intercellular bridges and occasional ductal lumina growing downward into the dermis. Eccrine poroma was diagnosed based on the histologic findings. The patient was treated by complete excision. The skin lesion was completely removed and there was no recurrence to date. Herein, we report a case of eccrine poroma on the forehead that clinically mimicked keratoacanthoma. Physicians should be aware of this possibility and perform a histopathologic evaluation to facilitate an accurate diagnosis.
Estimates of Aerosol Indirect Effect from Terra MODIS over Republic of Korea

<P>Moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data have been analyzed over four different regions (Yellow sea, Korean inland, East Sea, and South Sea) in Republic of Korea to investigate the seasonal variability of aerosol-cloud properties and aerosol indirect effect during the past decade (2000–2009). Aerosol optical depth (AOD) was found to be consistently high during spring. Cloud ice radius (CIR) also showed higher values during spring, while an enhancement in cloud water radius (CWR) and fine mode fraction (FMF) was observed during summer. AOD and aerosol index (AI) were found to be higher during January to June. However, FMF and CWR showed enhancement during July to December. Aerosol indirect effect (AIE) in each year has been estimated and found to be showing positive and negative indirect effects. The AIE for fixed cloud ice path (CIP) showed positive indirect effect (Twomey effect) over Yellow sea, while the AIE for fixed cloud water path (CWP) showed a major negative indirect effect (anti-Twomey effect) over all regions. During Changma (summer monsoon) period, the AIE for both CIP and CWP showed dominant anti-Twomey effect in middle and low level clouds, indicating the growth of cloud droplet radius with changes in aerosols, enhancing the precipitation.</P>
A case of acantholytic acanthoma on unusual site

Acantholytic acanthoma is a newly recognized, solitary benign tumor in which acantholysis is the hallmark. It was first described by Brownstein in 1985. It usually presents as an asymptomatic keratotic papule or nodule on the trunk. The histologic pattern resembles that seen in pemphigus or Hailey-Hailey disease. To our knowledge, only few cases have been reported as acantholytic acanthoma on the face. A 66-year-old woman visited our clinic with a solitary, 0.7 cm sized erythematous plaque on the forehead which had developed 1 year ago. A punch biopsy specimen revealed hyperkeratosis, acanthosis and marked acantholysis with a suprabasal acantholytic cleft. Dyskeratotic cells such as corps ronds or grains were not prominently observed. Acantholytic acanthoma was diagnosed based on the clinical and histologic findings. The patient is under observation without other treatments. Herein, we report a case of acantholytic acanthoma on the face which is an unusual site with review of the literature.

A survey was carried out to determine the nutritional status of rural elderly. The subjects of this study comprised of eightyseven persons aged sixty years and over in Seoul area. The questionnaire was disigned to investigate the environmental status of the subjects. At the same time, twentyfour hour dietary recall method was used to estimate their nutrient intakes. The results are summerized as follows: ㆍ Mean body weight and height of subjects were 53.3±12.7㎏ and 153.3±1.6㎝ respectively. ㆍ The chief somatic complains of subjects were fatigue(75.9%), amnesia(66.7%), rheumatism(65.5%) and Joint pain of muscleache(64.4%). ㆍ Most of subjects(74.4%) answered that their appetite changed with increasing age. ㆍ Daily nutrient intakes of subjects were sufficient as from 120 to 150% of RDA. ㆍ The nutritional status of subjects including energy, protein, vitamin and mineral intakes was proven to be improved than the results obtained from the earlier studies.

<P>Molecular classifications of breast cancer (BRC), such as human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), luminal A and luminal B, have been developed to reduce unnecessary treatment by dividing patients with BRC into low- and high-risk progression groups. However, these methods do not cover all of the pathological characteristics of BRC, and investigations into novel prognostic/therapeutic markers are thus continually required. In this study, we identified the overexpression of the histone methyltransferase, euchromatic histone-lysine N-methyltransferase 2 (EHMT2) in BRC samples (n=1,222) and normal samples (n=113) derived from the TCGA portal by performing a BRC tissue microarray. EHMT2 overexpression was clearly associated with a poor prognosis in multiple cohorts of patients with BRC (total, n=1,644). Furthermore, the knockdown of EHMT2 expression affected cell apoptosis via the downregulation and re-localization of heat shock protein family D (Hsp60) member 1 (HSPD1). In addition, a statistically significant positive correlation between EHMT2 and HSPD1 expression was revealed in the clinical cohorts. On the whole, the findings of this study may assist the development of novel therapeutic strategies and provide a prognostic marker (EHMT2) for patients with BRC.</P>

Asian dust (or yellow sand) occurring mainly in spring in East Asia is affected by the distribution of weather systems. This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of suspended particulate for Asian dust at Busan, Korea in 20 March 2010, which was one of the extreme case for the last 10 years. There was used the data of weather chart, satellite, automatic weather system (AWS), PM10, laser particle counter (LPC), and backward trajectories model. In synoptically, the high pressure was located in the northwestern part and low pressure was located in the northeastern part of Korea. The strong westerly winds from surface to upper layer makes it possible to move air masses rapidly. Air masses passing through Gobi Desert in Mongolia and Inner Mongolia plateau covered the entire Korean peninsula. As the results of aerosol analysis, PM10 concentration at Gudeok mountain in Busan was recorded 2,344 ㎍/m3 in 2300 LST 20 March 2010 and their concentration was markedly increased at coarse mode particle. In surface condition, westerly wind about 3 ∼ 5 m/s was dominant and small particles of 0.3 ∼ 0.5 ㎛ were distributed on the whole. In heavy metal components analysis, the elements from the land was predominated.

The seasonal variation of pH and ion components in precipitation were investigated from January to December 2009 at Busan, Korea. The precipitation was acidic with a volume-weighted mean pH concentration of 5.32, which ranged from 3.79 to 8.66. The volume-weighted mean conductivity showed 86.77 μS/cm and indicated higher concentration about 96.69 μS/cm in summer. The volume-weighted mean equivalent concentration of components followed the order: K+ > Ca2+ > nss-Ca2+ > NH4+ > Mg2+ > Na+ > Li+ in cations and Cl- > SO42- > nss-SO42- > NO3- > NO2- > F- > Br- in anions. Particularly, concentration of K+ and Cl- showed 56 and 78 % in cations and anions. The higher concentration in K+, Na+, Mg2+ and Cl- were shown in Busan city as compared to the other cities. The neutralization factors have been found to have higher value for potassium ion in winter compared with different seasons, indicating significant neutralization of acidic components over the region by potassium. Therefore, the precipitation characteristics at Busan had both continental and coastal as consequence of pH, conductivity and ionic analyses.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We investigated the effects of jeotgal (fermented fish sauce) on kimchi fermentation, with or without saeu-jeot and myeolchi-jeot. Bacterial community analysis showed that <I>Leuconostoc</I>, <I>Weissella</I>, <I>Lactobacillus</I>, and <I>Tetragenococcus</I> were the dominant genera; however, their succession depended on the presence of jeotgal. <I>Leuconostoc gasicomitatum</I> was the dominant species in kimchi without jeotgal, whereas <I>Weissella koreensis</I> and <I>Lactobacillus sakei</I> were the dominant species in kimchi with myeolchi-jeot and saeu-jeot, respectively. Metabolite analysis, using <SUP>1</SUP>H NMR, showed that the amounts of amino acids and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) were higher in kimchi with jeotgal. Increases in acetate, lactate, and mannitol contents depended on fructose consumption and were more rapid in kimchi with jeotgal. Moreover, the consumption of various amino acids affected the increase in kimchi LAB. Thus, the role of jeotgal in kimchi fermentation was related to enhancement of taste, the amino acid source, and the increases in levels of functional metabolites.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Effects of jeotgal on kimchi lactic acid bacteria succession and metabolite changes. </LI> <LI> Jeotgal was facilitating the reduction of coliform originated from raw materials. </LI> <LI> Jeotgal affected the growth of LAB, which produce GABA, lactate, acetate, and mannitol. </LI> </UL> </P>
