<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ocular prostheses are custom-made polymeric inserts that can be placed in anophthalmic sockets for cosmetic rehabilitation. Prosthetic eye wearers have reduced tear amount, and they often experience dry eye symptoms including dryness, irritation, discomfort, and discharge. Most modern ocular prostheses are made of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), which is highly hydrophobic. Previous research has shown that improving the wettability of contact lens materials decreases its wearers discomfort by increasing lubrication. Therefore, hydrophilic modification of PMMA-based ocular prostheses might also improve patient discomfort by improving lubrication. We modified the surfaces of PMMA-based ocular prostheses using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), which is hydrophilic. To do this, we used two strategies. One was a “grafting from” method, whereby PEG was polymerized from the PMMA surface. The other was a “grafting to” method, which involved PEG being covalently bonded to an amine-functionalized PMMA surface. Assessments involving the water contact angle, ellipsometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that PEG was successfully introduced to the PMMA surfaces using both strategies. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images revealed that neither strategy caused clinically significant alterations in the PMMA surface morphology. In vitro bacterial adhesion assessments showed that the hydrophilic modifications effectively reduced bacterial adhesion without inducing cytotoxicity. These results imply that hydrophilic surface modifications of conventional ocular prostheses may decrease patient discomfort and ocular prosthesis-related infections.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Surfaces of PMMA-based ocular prosthesis were modified via PEG grafting. </LI> <LI> The hydrophilic surface modifications effectively inhibited bacterial adhesion. </LI> <LI> These modifications of ocular prostheses may decrease discomfort and infections. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

In this paper, a positioning method of distributed power system is proposed to minimize the average voltage variation of a DC microgrid through voltage sensitivity analysis. The voltage sensitivity under a droop control depends on the position of the distributed power system. In order to acquire a precise voltage sensitivity under a droop control, we analyzed the power flow by introducing a droop bus with the considerations of the droop characteristics. The results of the positioning method are verified through PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.

<P><B>Background:</B></P><P>The biological significance of FOXO1, a member of the forkhead box O transcription factor family, in gastric cancer (GC) remains unclear. The present study provides direct evidence of the role of FOXO1 in tumour growth and metastasis of GC in relation to human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2).</P><P><B>Methods:</B></P><P>The expressions of FOXO1 and HER2 were modulated in GC cell lines (SNU-638, MKN45, SNU-216 and NCI-N87) by stable transfections. The effects of transfection on GC phenotypes were evaluated <I>in vitro</I> and in animal models. In addition, the relationship between FOXO1 and HER2 was analysed using GC clinical specimens, cell lines and xenografts.</P><P><B>Results:</B></P><P>FOXO1 silencing in GC cells increased colony formation and mesenchymal transition <I>in vitro</I>, as well as tumour growth and metastasis in nude mice, whereas HER2 silencing induced the opposite results.. Furthermore, an inverse relationship between FOXO1 and HER2 was found in clinical specimens of GC, GC cells and GC xenograft tumours. Although a negative crosstalk between these two molecules was shown, double knockdown of both FOXO1 and HER2 in GC cells revealed that HER2 silencing reversed the FOXO1 shRNA-induced migration and invasion even without the FOXO1 restoration.</P><P><B>Conclusions:</B></P><P>Our results indicate that loss of FOXO1 promotes GC growth and metastasis by upregulating HER2 expression and that the HER2 expression is more critical to the induction of GC cell metastasis. The present study provides evidence that the FOXO1/HER2 pathway may regulate GC progression in a subgroup of GC patients.</P>

Background: When patients were diagnosed as a malignancy by skin biopsy, most of them were consulted to tertiary medical center. However, there were some cases that were finally changed to benign result from malignant through the reassessment of histologic specimen. Objectives: To analyze characteristics of cases confirmed of benign tumors through reassessment of histologic specimen among cases consulted as cutaneous malignancies from other clinics. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted by reviewing the records of patients changed to benign result in our hospital after referral for biopsy-proven malignancy.. Results: Fourteen patients were enrolled in this study. Most patients got the procedure by non-dermatologist. Pathologic diagnoses reported from other clinics included sarcoma such as dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, squamous cell carcinoma and so on. The expertise of dermatopathologist was necessary for the final diagnoses of dermatofibroma, myopericytoma, ancient schwannoma and so on. Moreover, most patients had been referred without immunohistochemical evaluation for diagnosis. Conclusion: Although referred patients were proven as malignancy by biopsy in other clinics, reassessment of pathologic slides was mandatory to confirm the diagnostic accuracy. If the final result is changed to benign from malignant, this process will relieve patient’s anxiety and prevent the over-evaluation and inappropriate management.
An analysis of characteristics of pigmented fungiform papillae of the tongue: single center study

Background: Pigmented fungiform papillae of the tongue (PFPT) is a rare benign pigmentary disorder of the tongue. In dark-skinned individuals, PFPT appears to be relatively common. However, limited data exist on PFPT in Korean patients. Objectives: To investigate the clinical characteristics of PFPT in Korean patients Methods: Patients diagnosed with PFPT between 1995 and 2016 at Pusan National University Hospital were included. Clinical characteristics of PFPT, dermoscopic findings, and comorbidities were reviewed. Results: Eighteen patients diagnosed as PFPT were enrolled. Male to female ratio was 1 : 5. The mean age at diagnosis was 39.6 years (range, 8-65 years). According to Holzwanger’s classification, type I was the most common (88.9%). PFPT was commonly concomitant with pigmentary disorders including mucosal melanotic macules, Laugier-Hunziker syndrome, Melasma, and melanonychia (6/18, 33.3%). Preceding oral inflammatory lesions were found in 3 patients (16.7%), and systemic diseases and infectious diseases existed in 2 patients respectively (11.1%). Dermoscopic examination was performed in 7 patients; Pigmented border with dichotomized vessels (Rose petal pattern, 71.4%), and diffuse pigmentation (cobblestone pattern, 57.1%) were common findings. Conclusion: Our study shows PFPT can coexist with pigmentary disorder. Female predominance, concomitant pigmentary disorders of PFPT shows sex hormone or susceptibility to abnormal pigmentation may play a role in pathogenesis of PFPT.

<P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>Overactive bladder (OAB) causes urinary urgency, usually accompanied by frequency and nocturia. Alpha 1-adrenergic receptor (α<SUB>1</SUB>-AR) antagonists are known to improve lower urinary tract symptoms associated with OAB. The α<SUB>1</SUB>-AR antagonists constitute a variety of drugs according to the receptor subtype affinity. This study investigated the efficacy of tamsulosin, naftopidil, and a combination of the two on OAB rats.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>The OAB rat model was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide for 14 days. The experimental groups were divided into 5 groups: control group, OAB-induction group, OAB-induction and tamsulosin monotherapy group, OAB-induction and naftopidil monotherapy group, and OAB-induction and tamsulosin-naftopidil combination therapy group. For the drug-treated groups, each drug was administrated for 14 days after the OAB induction. Cystometry for urodynamic evaluation and immunohistochemical stain for c-Fos and nerve growth factor (NGF) expressions in the central micturition centers were performed.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Increased contraction pressure and time with enhanced c-Fos and NGF expressions in the central micturition centers were found in the OAB rats. Tamsulosin suppressed contraction pressure and time while inhibiting c-Fos and NGF expressions. Naftopidil showed no significant effect and combination therapy showed less of an effect on contraction pressure and time. Naftopidil and combination therapy exerted no significant effect on the c-Fos and NGF expressions.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Tamsulosin showed the most prominent efficacy for the treatment of OAB compared to the naftopidil and combination. The combination of tamsulosin with naftopidil showed no synergistic effects on OAB; however, further studies of addon therapy might provide opportunities to find a new modality.</P>

In the present study, brown rice was steeped in 20 % wettable powder fludioxonil for 24 h, subsequently germinated, and transplanted in paddy fields. The harvested rice was tested at 156 days to detect residue levels using gas chromatography-nitrogen phosphorus detector. Validation was carried out to assess the following parameters: linearity, limit of detection and limit of quantitation (LOQ), recovery, and storage stability. Using matrix-matched calibrations, the determination coefficients were >0.999 in both matrices. Mean recoveries were 73.5-101.0 % with relative standard deviations <10 % in both matrices. The LOQ (0.006 mg/kg) was lower than the maximum residue limit (MRL = 0.02 mg/kg) set by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Republic of Korea. The developed method was applied successfully, and no residues were detected in field-incurred rice and/or rice straw samples.
Size Dependence of the Photo- and Cathodo-luminescence of Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>S:Eu Phosphors

$Y_2O_2S$:Eu phosphors were synthesized via solid-state reactions. $Y_2O_2S$:Eu phosphor particles of various sizes were obtained by varying the firing temperature and firing time. The photoluminescence properties of these $Y_2O_2S$:Eu phosphors were examined. In addition, the cathodoluminescence properties of the $Y_2O_2S$:Eu phosphors were examined for applied voltages of 3-8 kV. The relationship between the luminescence intensity and particle size of the$Y_2O_2S$:Eu phosphors was investigated. The photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence of the $Y_2O_2S$:Eu phosphors are affected differently by variations in particle size.
