Biomass combustion converts the renewable fuel directly into energy. This paper summarizes experimental studies on packed bed combustion of different biomass materials including herbaceous crops, woody and waste-derived materials. The key mechanism of combustion in a packed bed is the downward propagation of ignition front against the upward air flow. Radiation is the major mode of heat transfer for the ignition propagation, which delivers the heat required for moisture evaporation and heating up to a pyrolysis temperature in fresh particles below the ignition front. From measurements, key parameters for the rates of ignition and combustion can be derived, which are independent of the fuel bed size and therefore useful for furnace design and operation. The parameters include ignition front speed, ignition rate and burning rate. The test results show that fairly dry biomass has a maximum burning rate of 280-400 ㎏/㎡hr and corresponding air flow rate to achieve the burning rate varies with particle shape and size.
