Objectives : To see if there were any differences in waist circumference reduction when certain variable such as age, sex, BFR(BFR; Body Fat Rate), PIBW(PIBW; Percent Ideal Body Weight), WHR(WHR; Waist Hip Ratio) and BMI(BMI; Body Mass Index) were given. Methods : Among outpatients who admitted to department of Oriental Rehabilitation Medicine, Jeon-Ju Oriental Medicine Hospital, Won-kwang University from August 2003 to september 2004, 89 obese patients were chosen and electroacupunture was practiced to these groups in order to treat abdominal obesity and waist circumference reduction. Results : There were no significant correlation between sex, age and waist circumference reduction. Compared to groups who had shown lower BMI, higher BMI groups have shown greater change in waist circumference reduction. As BFR increase waist circumference reduction tended to increase as well. Conclusions : From the above results, higher BMI groups had shown greater change in waist circumference reduction compared to lower BMI groups.
Minimal invasive surgery (LESS) for huge cystic adnexal tumors in whole abdomen

Laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) is helpful if not an evidence of suspicious malignancy in huge adnexa tumors. This approach might be reasonable alternative to conventional laparoscopic surgery. We report two cases with LESS for huge cystic adnexal tumors in whole abdomen. A 58 years old multigravida woman in menopause underwent removal of a huge cystic adnexal mass that occupied her entire abdomen by LESS.(ca.5200ml aspiration) A 15 years old single nulligravida woman had a huge cystic adnexal tumor in whole abdomen reaching to the level of the xyphoid process. A needle through the transumbilical single port was inserted directly under the mass. Subsequently, 8000 ml of cystic fluid was aspirated without spillage.

Background In general, external rotation (ER) exercises are commonly used in rotator cuff retraining programs to improve stabilization ability. ER exercises at 90° of shoulder abduction are common and effective in strengthening the infraspinatus (ISP). However, if the ISP is weak during ER at 90° shoulder abduction, the posterior deltoid muscle (PD) is overactivated, which can lead to anterior translation of the humeral head. Therefore, the selective activation of ISP muscles is an important factor in rehabilitation. Objectives We investigated the muscle activities of the ISP, PD, and middle trapezius (MT), the ratio of the ISP to PD muscle activities, and the anterior translation of the humeral head in response to three resistance intensities during sitting external rotation (SITER) exercises. Methods A total of 12 healthy women recorded changes in the anterior translation of the humeral head using a load cell, the muscle activities of the ISP, PD, and MT, the ratio of the ISP to PD muscle activities using surface electromyography (EMG) during SITER under three different intensities [low (10-20%) medium (45-55%) high (60-70%)]. Results The ISP, PD, and MT amplitudes were highest at high intensity, followed by medium and low intensities during SITER (p < 0.001). The muscle activity ratio was significantly highest at medium intensity compared with low and high intensities (p = 0.031). The anterior translation of the humeral head was highest at high intensity, followed by medium and low intensities during SITER (p < 0.001). Conclusions Medium intensity (45-55%) was the most appropriate intensity during the SITER exercise. However, anterior gliding of the humeral head was the lowest at low intensity. Therefore, during ER exercises, we should think about how to control the anterior gliding of the humeral head.
Effects of Electric Stimulation with Static Stretching on Hamstrings Flexibility

Purpose: Flexibility has been considered one of the most important goals in rehabilitation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) with the static stretching technique on the flexibility of hamstrings. Methods: Twenty-four subjects (15 men, 9 women) with limited hamstrings flexibility received three different intervention sessions in random order. The treatment sessions included static stretching (SS), static stretching with motor-level TENS (SS with motor TENS) and sensory-level TENS (SS with sensory TENS). All sessions of SS were performed in the straight-leg raise position for 30 seconds followed by rest for 15 seconds, in repetitions for 10 minutes using a belt. The TENS groups underwent TENS stimulation (40 μs, 100 Hz) during the stretching for 10 minutes. Outcome measures were evaluated according to active knee extension (AKE) and recorded before the session and at 0, 3, 6, 9, and 15 minutes after the session. Results: There was significant improvement in hamstrings flexibility within all groups (p<0.05). SS with TENS (both sensory and motor) maintained significant increases in knee extension range of motion until 15 minutes post-treatment. In contrast, the SS-only group maintained significantly increased hamstrings flexibility only until 6 minutes post-treatment (p<0.05). Conclusion: Improvement in hamstrings flexibility with SS with TENS was maintained longer than with SS-only intervention. Electrical stimulation with stretching may be more effective than SS alone for increased duration of maintained hamstrings flexibility.
O-GlcNAcylation and Expression of OGT in Ovarian cancer tissues

O-GlcNAcylation is an O-linked β-N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) moiety linked to the side chain hydroxyl of a serine or threonine residues of nuclear and cytoplasmic proteins. The O-GlcNAcylation is catalyzed by O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) and its removal is catalyzed by O-GlcNAc-selective N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (O-GlcNAcase, OGA). O-GlcNAcylationis becoming increasing realized as having important roles in cancer-relevant processes. However, little is known about the role of aberrant O-GlcNAcylation in ovarian cancer. In this study, level of O-GlcNAcylation and expression of OGT were examined in ovarian cancer tissues Immunohistochemical studies for expression of OGT, OGA and O-GlcNAcylation was performed on ovarian cancer tissues. O-GlcNAcylation, OGT and OGA epression were quantified by Western blotting. Immunohistochemical and the Western blot analysis of OGT and O-GlcNAcylation level were significantly elevated in ovarian cancer tissues compared to normal tissues, while expression OGA from cancer tissues were unvaried. Increased expression of OGT and level of O-GlcNAcylationin might be important role in the pathogenesis of ovarian cancer, and may be a valuable target for diagnosis and therapy of ovarian cancer.

Proteomic Analysis Reveals an Elevated Expression of Heat Shock Protein 27 in Preeclamptic Placentas

<P><I>Aim:</I> The purpose of this study was to identify the placental proteins that are associated with preeclampsia by performing proteomic analysis. <I>Methods:</I> To identify the proteins associated with preeclampsia, we performed two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE), followed by silver staining. The overexpressed proteins were identified by performing matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), followed by peptide mass fingerprinting, a protein database search and Western blot analysis. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to determine the localization of the overexpressed Hsp27. <I>Results:</I> By use of 2-DE and MALDI-TOF-MS analysis, twelve differentially expressed proteins were identified, of which four proteins were upregulated and eight proteins were downregulated. One of the upregulated spots was identified as Hsp27. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that Hsp27 was mainly located in the trophoblasts. The Western blot analysis showed that the expression of Hsp27 in the tissues of the preeclampsia placenta was significantly increased. <I>Conclusions:</I> Our study confirmed that four proteins are upregulated and eight proteins are downregulated in preeclampsia. These differentially expressed proteins include signal transduction protein and molecular chaperon protein, in which Hsp27 is upregulated. We suggest that the increased expression level of Hsp27 might be correlated with the pathophysiology of preeclampsia.</P><P>Copyright © 2011 S. Karger AG, Basel</P>

<P>We assessed the accuracy of yeast bloodstream isolate identification performed over a 1-year period at 10 South Korean hospitals, using the matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time of flight (MALDI-TOF)-based Vitek MS system. The overall phenotypic misidentification rate was 3.4% (18/533), with considerable variation between hospitals (0.0% to 19.0%), compared to 1.1% (6/533) for the Vitek MS system.</P>
A Phenylpropanoid Glycoside as a Calcineurin Inhibitor Isolated from Magnolia obovata Thunb

To identify plant-derived cell signaling inhibitors with antifungal properties, a twocomponent screening system using both wild-type Cryptococcus neoformans and a calcineurin mutant was employed owing to their counter-regulatory actions on the Hog1 mitogenactivated protein kinase and calcineurin pathways. Of the 2,000 plant extracts evaluated, a single bioactive compound from M. obovata Thunb. was found to act specifically on the calcineurin pathway of C. neoformans. This compound was identified as magnoloside A, and had potent antifungal activities against various Cryptococcus strains with minimum inhibitory concentration values ranging from 1.0 to 4.0 μg/ml.
