1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, has been used to prevent or treat type 2 diabetes. Low amounts of DNJ are found in mulberry leaf; however, a methodology is necessary to enhance the DNJ content of mulberry leaf extract (MLE) since increasing the amounts of DNJ is required for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes. In this study, the DNJ content of MLE was increased through the optimization of the conditions for MLE fermentation by Lactobacillus plantarum SG-053, using response surface methodology (RSM). By single factor testing, the optimal conditions were identified as an inoculum concentration of 1%(v/v), an MLE concentration of 3°Bx, and no agitation. Based on a Plackett-Burman design, the following factors were considered to majorly affect the DNJ content in the MLE fermentation product: the initial pH, fermentation temperature, and fermentation time. By response surface methodology, the optimal conditions for MLE fermentation was found to have an initial pH of 5.5, a fermentation temperature of 31.9℃, and a fermentation time of 34 h. Under these optimal fermentation conditions, the DNJ content in MLE increased 3.59 times, or from 23.85 to 85.54 μg/mL.
Purification and prebiotics effect of oligosaccharide produced by Leuconostoc lactis CCK940

Glucansucrase is an enzyme classified as a glycoside hydrolase (GH) 70 family, which catalyzes the synthesis of various glucans and glucooligosaccharides with a low molecular weight using sucrose as a donor of D-glucopyranose and maltose as a carbohydrate acceptor. Oligosaccharides are indigestiable carbohydrate with low calories, which have various positive effects on the health of intestinal track. In this study, oligosaccharide produced from Leuconostoc lactis CCK940 was purified and its prebiotics effect was investigated. Leuconostoc lactis CCK940 which isolated from Chinese cabbage kimchi produced oligosaccharide using 5%(w/v) sucrose as a donor and 3%(w/v) maltose as an acceptor. Oligosaccharide produced was purified using Bio-gel P2 column chromatography and DPs of the resulting oligosaccharide were ranged from 3 to 7. When the prebiotics effects of freeze dried oligosaccharide were examined, 1%(w/v) of purified oligosaccharide added to carbohydrate-free MRS showed good prebiotics effects on Lactobacillus plantarum KCCM 12116, L. reuteri KCTC40417, and Bifidobacterium animalis KCCM1209.

Purpose: We aimed to analyze the treatment outcome and long-term toxicity of 70 Gy hypofractionated intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for localized prostate cancer using a customized rectal balloon. Materials and Methods: We reviewed medical records of 86 prostate cancer patients who received curative radiotherapy between January 2004 and December 2011 at our institution. Patients were designated as low (12.8%), intermediate (20.9%), or high risk (66.3%). Thirty patients received a total dose of 70 Gy in 28 fractions over 5 weeks via IMRT (the Hypo-IMRT group); 56 received 70.2 Gy in 39 fractions over 7 weeks via 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (the CF-3DRT group, which served as a reference for comparison). A customized rectal balloon was placed in Hypo-IMRT group throughout the entire radiotherapy course. Androgen deprivation therapy was administered to 47 patients (Hypo-IMRT group, 17; CF-3DRT group, 30). Late genitourinary (GU) and gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity were evaluated according to the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group criteria. Results: The median follow-up period was 74.4 months (range, 18.8 to 125.9 months). The 5-year actuarial biochemical relapse-free survival rates for low-, intermediate-, and high-risk patients were 100%, 100%, and 88.5%, respectively, for the Hypo-IMRT group and 80%, 77.8%, and 63.6%, respectively, for the CF-3DRT group (p < 0.046). No patient presented with acute or late GU toxicity ≥grade 3. Late grade 3 GI toxicity occurred in 2 patients (3.6%) in the CF-3DRT group and 1 patient (3.3%) in the Hypo-IMRT group. Conclusion: Hypo-IMRT with a customized rectal balloon resulted in excellent biochemical control rates with minimal toxicity in localized prostate cancer patients.

Purpose: We examined the effects of 3 months of intensive education (IE) after hospital discharge compared to conventional education (CE) on nutritional status and quality of diet and life among South Korean gastrectomy patients. Methods: The study was conducted among 53 hospitalized gastrectomy in-patients (IE group, n = 28; CE group, n = 25) at Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong. Baseline data were collected from electronic medical records and additional information was gathered via anthropometric measurements, assessment of nutritional status through a patientgenerated, subjective global assessment (PG-SGA), diet assessment, and measures of self-efficacy and satisfaction with meals for 3 months following hospital discharge. Results: Total PG-SGA scores were significantly higher in the CE group than in the IE group at 3-week post-discharge (5.2 in the IE group vs. 10.4 in the CE group, P < 0.001), with higher scores indicating a greater severity of malnutrition. Energy intake over the 3 months increased in both the IE group (from 1,390 to 1,726 kcal/day) and the CE group (from 1,227 to 1,540 kcal/day). At 3-week post-discharge, the IE group had significantly higher daily protein and fat intake (P < 0.05). Selfefficacy improved in each category (P < 0.001), except for ‘difficulty eating adequate food’. When assessing satisfaction with meals, there was a difference in the ‘satisfaction with the current meal size’ (P < 0.001) and ‘satisfaction with the menu content’ (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Nutritional status among gastrectomy patients in the IE group improved. Relative to the CE control, the IE group demonstrated improved self-efficacy and meal satisfaction 3-week post-discharge.

The existence of gender gaps in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) scores has been documented in the literature. In particular, it was revealed that on average Korean female students underperform/outperform their male counterparts in mathematics/reading scores for PISA 2012. This study was conducted to examine crucial determinants in understanding gender differences. We examined whether or not the influence of educational contextual variables on mathematics, reading and science achievement differs by gender using multilevel model with each group of male and female students. As a result, there were variables that had more influence on male or female students, though there were some differences by subject. It can be concluded that females have been affected more by teachers than by parents, while males have been affected more by parents. Also, creative extracurricular activities had much more of an effect male students than females. In addition, participation in math-related activities only influenced females, and academic and vocational expectation in math and class management of math teachers only influenced male students. Based on the results, we proposed an educational and political plan that may bridge disparity gaps in academic achievement by gender.

Crop productivity decreases globally as a result of salinization. However, salinity impact on greenhouse-grown crops is much higher than on field-grown crops due to the overall concentrations of nutrients in greenhouse soils. Therefore, this study was performed to determine the short-term changes in growth, photosynthesis, and metabolites of tomato plants grown in greenhouse under heavily input of fertilizers evaluated by microbial activity and chemical properties of soils. The soils (< 3, 3.01~6, 6.01~10 and >10.01 dS m<sup>-1</sup>) from farmer’s greenhouse fields having different fertilization practices were used. Results showed that the salt-accumulated soil affected adversely the growth of tomato plants. Tomato plants were seldom to complete their growth against > 10.0 d Sm<sup>-1</sup> level of EC. The assimilation rate of CO2 from the upper fully expanded leaves of tomato plants is reduced under increasing soil EC levels at 14 days, however; it was the highest in moderate or high EC-subjected (3.0 ~ 10.0 dS m<sup>-1</sup>) at 28 days. In our experiment, soluble sugars and starch were sensitive markers for salt stress and thus might assume the status of crops against various salt conditions. Taken together, tomato plants found to have tolerance against moderate soil EC stress. Various EC levels (<3.0 ~ 10.0 dS m<sup>-1</sup>) led to a slight decrease in organic matter (OM) contents in soils at 28 days. Salinity stress led to higher microbial activity in soils, followed by a decomposition of OM in soils as indicated by the changes in soil chemical properties.
