Physical Properties of In-Mold Coating for Powder Slush Molded Skin

Physical properties of in-mold coating (IMC) for powder slush molded (PSM) instrument panel skin were investigated. To get excellent appearance of skin, optimized IMC and release agent spray conditions were determined, which were 15 ㎝ of distance, at 30 sec of flash off time, and 15-20 microns of IMC thickness. For effective melting of powder, powder slush molding conditions were determined as 240℃ of mold temperature, 4 times of rotation time for slush molding, and 50℃ of initial mold temperature. The reliability test result of IMC satisfied all specification requirements.

In this study, we discuss the relationship between formulation and properties of polypropylene (PP) / whisker composites. Mechanical tests demonstrated that strength and modulus of the composite significantly increase with addition of whiskers. For use of automotive interior part, PP based composite mixed with whisker and rubber was developed and its suitability of application into glove box was investigated. The whisker composites yield mechanical properties similar to traditional talc filled PP composites, which should lead to weight saving opportunities while not sacrificing part performance.
