Rehabilitation exercises which maintain a patient’s interest and quantitative evaluation of rehabilitation are required. To solve these problems, we have developed a haptic device system. When users move the grip, the haptic device provides a virtual force, either assisting the movement of their arm or working against it. To investigate the functional effect of this system using a training program, we measured the grip position, velocity, force on the grip, and EMG activities during a reaching task for three motor function disorder subjects. The accuracy of the grip trajectories and the EMG patterns were similar in all subjects. These results suggested that the EMG activities were improved by applying the virtual force to the grip. These results can be used for the development of rehabilitation training programs and evaluation methods.

In order to cope with the unprecedented aging society, senior citizens need to support themselves and maintain their health. Although there are many electric vehicles such as electric wheelchairs or senior cars, few of them maintain the health of senior citizen. They sometimes restrict senior citizen’s sphere of activity. To solve these problems, we have development of care prevention type four-wheel electric power-assisted personal mobility for care prevention. To investigate the functional effect of this system using driving school road and slope, we measured oxygen uptake values and electromyography (EMG) activities during ride on it. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the physical load of the four-wheel electric power-assisted personal mobility users by the oxygen uptake values and EMG activities while they are propelling a normal road and on a slope. These results can be used for the development of livelihood support equipment and evaluation methods.

Rehabilitation exercises which maintain a patient’s interest and quantitative evaluation of rehabilitation are required. To solve these problems, we have development of measuring equipment for upper limb motor function rehabilitation using optical sensor. This system consists of an optical sensor device, a personal computer and calculator program for upper limb position. When users move the optical sensor, the motion measuring equipment calculates position. We measured the optical sensor position and migration length during a sanding task and wiping. The accuracy of the optical sensor trajectories was similar in all actual measured value. These results can be use for the development of rehabilitation training programs and evaluation methods.

We have applied a haptic device to the rehabilitation tool and made efforts to integrate the motion and sensory therapy, in order to avoid boredom that the patients usually feel. This rehabilitation tool system consists of a haptic device, a display, a computer, and software for training. When the user moves the grip, the haptic device provides a virtual force and it can either assists the movement of the arm or work against it. We have carried out a preliminary experiment with young and middle age group and elderly group. It aims to confirm the functionality of this system and to collect the reference data for the evaluation of the upper-limb disability. The results of our experiment show that the system could be used to evaluate the patient"s ability of upper-limb motion.
