This paper deals with the recent trends of Korean studies in Japanese universities. It centers upon the academic associations and institutes for Korean studies; also, the major books which have given influence on Korean studies are touched upon. The contents of this paper are as follows: First, in the case of general books on Korea, cultural-anthropologists started Korean studies from the middle 1980's. Their studies were relatively small; however, the role of political scholars, economists and sociologists were important. On the other hand, the studies on North Korea were lower in quality and quantity than those on South Korea. Second, the number of scholars associated with Korean studies was about 800 in 2007. Most of the scholars focused on studies of modern Korea. The universities that have a great amount of scholars related to Korean studies are Tokyo Univ., Kyushyu Univ. and Keio Univ. The interdisciplinary associations are found at Chyosengakkai, which was founded in 1950, and Gendaikannkokuchyosengakkai, which was founded in 2000. The number of universities in Japan which have courses on Korea are 15. Third, as an historical association, Chyosensigenkyuukai was founded in 1959 and Nihonshyokuminchigenkyuukai in 1986. In the field of cultural-anthropology, Kannkokuchyosengenkyuukai was founded in 1999. In linguistics, Chyosengogenkyuukai was founded in 1983 and Chyosengokyouikugenkyuukai was founded in 1988. In literature, there are no academic associations. In the field of political, economic and social science, Gendaikannkokukakkai is the center of Korean studies. The studies on South Korea go into greater depth than those on North Korea.
