        Cockroach as a Vector of Blastocystis sp. is Risk for Golden Monkeys in Zoo

        Blastocystis sp. is a kind of protozoa living in the intestinal tract of human and animals, which will cause intestinal diseases such as diarrhea, abdominal distension and vomiting. This paper was aimed to understand the infection of Blastocystis sp. In golden monkeys and the transmission path in North China. Thirty-seven feces samples from golden monkeys and 116 cockroach samples from Shijiazhuang Zoo were collected from July to October 2019 for PCR analysis of Blastocystis sp. Genetic diversity analysis was further conducted on the samples with positive PCR results. The results showed that the infection rate was 48.7% (18/37) in golden monkeys and 82.8% (96/116) in cockroaches, respectively. The genetic evolution analysis based on small subunit ribosomal RNA demonstrated that three subtypes (ST) of Blastocystis sp. including ST1, ST2, and ST3 existed in the intestinal tract of golden monkeys, while only ST2 was detected in the intestinal tract of cockroaches. This paper may provide supports for the quarantine and control of Blastocystis sp. for the zoo in Northern China.

        Influence of Coastal Wind on Surface Ozone and Nitrogen Oxides in Suburban Shanghai

        Surface ozone, NO, NO2, and NOx were measured at a coastal site (Shihua) and a nearby inland site (Zhujing) in suburban Shanghai for the whole year of 2009. More days with ozone pollution in a longer time range were observed at the coastal site than the inland site. The diurnal variations of NOx concentrations were obviously higher at Zhujing station, while those of ozone concentrations were higher at Shihua station, indicating their different air pollution conditions. Coastal wind has significant influence on the levels and characteristics of the air pollutants. The ozone concentrations during maritime winds (MW) were much higher than those during continental winds (CW) at each of the site, while the NO and NO2 concentrations were both opposite. The ozone concentrations at Shihua station were much higher than those at Zhujing station, while the NO and NO2 concentrations were both opposite. The ozone concentrations at both of the two sites showed a distinct “weekend effects” and “weekdays effects” patterns during CW and MW, respectively. Correlation analysis of the pollutants showed that, the compounds during MW were more age than those during CW, and the compounds at Shihua were more age than those at Zhujing. The air pollutions at both of the two sites are mainly associated with the pollutants emitted in this region instead of long range transport.

        Conceptual design for a 5 kWe space nuclear reactor power system

        Enhancing the capabilities of unmanned space exploration, such as satellite monitoring and space science missions, requires efficient and reliable nuclear power systems. A viable solution is found in the 1–10 kWe power level of space nuclear reactor power systems, offering advantages such as a manageable research and development process, and relatively low investment requirements. This paper introduces a conceptual design for a 5 kWe space nuclear reactor power system, outlining its components and characteristics. The study includes a thorough analysis of potential challenges, encompassing heat pipe failure accidents, re-entry scenarios, and weight estimation considerations. The results demonstrate that the proposed space nuclear reactor power system effectively meets the safety requirements. The total mass of the power system is estimated at approximately 1.5 tons, with a specific mass of around 300 kg/kWe. This research contributes valuable insights for the design of space nuclear reactor power systems operating within a similar power range

        Proteome alterations of reverse photoperiod-sensitive genic male sterile rice (Oryza sativa L.) at fertility transformation stage

        The two-line system has been widely used inhybrid rice seed production, and the reverse photoperiodsensitivegenic male sterile line is a new germplasm withan opposite phenotype compared with normal photoperiodsensitivegenic male sterile rice. To better understand themolecular mechanisms of fertility regulation in reversephotoperiod-sensitive genic male sterile rice, a comparativeproteomic approach was used to analyze the proteinprofiles of three different tissues (young panicles, flagleaves and leaf sheaths) of D52S during the sensitive periodof pollen fertility transformation under sterile and fertileconditions. By quantitative analysis, 66 protein spotswere identified to be significantly changed in the threetissues. Bioinformatics analyses revealed that in sterilerice, a number of proteins involved in lignin-flavonoidbiosynthesis pathway were down-accumulated in panicles. The majority of proteins associated with energy metabolismwere down-accumulated in leaf sheaths while theproteins up-accumulated in leaves and leaf sheaths wereexclusively photosynthesis and defense related. Based onthe proteomics data, a short-day induced male sterilityprotein network was proposed. In addition, the genes ofselected protein spots were further analyzed by qPCR. These findings provide data for better understanding theregulation of pollen fertility in reverse photoperiodsensitivegenic male sterile rice, which could assist in thedevelopment of practical reverse photoperiod-sensitivegenic male sterile rice for large-scale crop breedingprograms.

        Nonisothermal Decomposition Reaction Kinetics, Specific Heat Capacity, Thermodynamic Properties and Adiabatic Time-to-explosion of 4-Amino-1,2,4-triazole Copper Complex

        4-Amino-1,2,4-triazole copper complex (4-ATzCu) was synthesized, and its thermal behaviors, nonisothermal decomposition reaction kinetics were studied by DSC and TG-DTG techniques. The thermal decomposition reaction kinetic equation was obtained as: dα / dt =1022.01 (1−α )[−ln(1−α )]1/3 exp(−2.75×104 /T) . The standard mole specific heat capacity of the complex was determined and the standard molar heat capacity is 305.66 J·mol‒1·K‒1 at 298.15 K. The entropy of activation ( ΔS ≠ ), enthalpy of activation (ΔH ≠), and Gibbs free energy of activation ( ΔG≠) are calculated as 171.88 J·mol‒1·K‒1, 225.81 kJ·mol‒1 and 141.18 kJ·mol‒1, and the adiabatic time-to-explosion of the complex was obtained as 389.20 s.

      • Molecular Cloning of Hemoglobin Alpha-chain Gene from Pantholops hodgsonii, a Hypoxic Tolerance Species

        To investigate the possible mechanisms of high-altitude native animals in adapting to high altitude, we cloned hemoglobin alpha-chain (alpha-chain Hb) gene from Pantholops hodgsonii, an animal species that indigenously lives at elevations of 3700-5500 m on the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau. Using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique, the alpha-chain Hb gene was amplified from total RNA in the liver of the Pantholops hodgsonii. TA cloning technique was used and the PCR product was cloned into pGEM-T vector. The DNA sequence of the gene was highly homologous with sheep (99.1%), goat (98.6%), cattle (95.6%) and human (86.5%). The alpha-chain Hb gene encoded a 142-amino acid protein that could be identified with the homology of alpha-chain Hb protein in sheep (98%), goat (96%), cattle (91%) and human (87%). However, 18 alternations were detected when compared with the alpha-chain Hb gene in human, and 2 in sheep. Moreover, the alterations of a117 GluAsp and $\alpha$132 AsnSer in important regions were noted in human and sheep, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that the structure of alpha-chain Hb was highly similar to that in sheep. This study provided essential information for elucidating the possible roles of hemoglobin in adapting to extremely high altitude in Pantholops hodgsonii.

        Neuroprotective effect of green tea extractives against oxidative stress by enhancing the survival and proliferation of PC12 cells

        Backgrounds: Previous studies were mainly focused on the effect of catechins and caffeine, the main pharmacological ingredients of green tea. However, the ordinary way of taking green tea is by drinking the tea water. Hence the benefits of water extractives of green tea were investigated in the current study. Methods: H2O2 was applied to induce the oxidative stress on PC12 cells. The neuroprotective effects of green tea against oxidative stress were determined by observing the biological behaviors of PC12 cells. Results: With the pre-treatment of light green tea, the survival and proliferation of oxidative stressed PC12 cells were significantly enhanced. H2O2 induced PC12 cell apoptosis was completely reversed. Consistently, the expression of JNK was up-regulated while the caspase-3 was down-regulated. Conclusion: These results suggested that drinking green tea, particularly the light green tea, performed neuroprotective effects against oxidative stress.

        Effect of Iron Ore Tailings Replacing Porous Basalt on Properties of Cement Stabilized Macadam

        In this paper, iron ore tailings (IOT) were separated from the tailings field and used to prepare cement stabilized macadam (CSM) with porous basalt aggregate. First, the basic properties of the raw materials were studied. Porous basalt was replaced by IOT at ratios of 0, 20 %, 40 %, 60 %, 80 %, and 100 % as fine aggregate to prepare CSM, and the effects of different cement dosage (4 %, 5 %, 6 %) on CSM performance were also investigated. CSM’s durability and mechanical performance with ages of 7 d, 28 d, and 90 d were studied with the unconfined compression strength test, splitting tensile strength test, compressive modulus test and freeze-thaw test, respectively. The changes in Ca2+ content in CSM of different ages and different IOT ratios were analyzed by the ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) titration method, and the micro-morphology of CSM with different ages and different IOT replaced ratio were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that with the same cement dosage, the strengths of the IOT-replaced CSM were weaker than that of the porous basalt aggregate at early stage, and the strength was highest at the replaced ratio of 60 %. With a cement dosage of 4 %, the unconfined compressive strength of CSM without IOT was increased by 6.78 % at ages from 28 d to 90 d, while the splitting tensile strength increased by 7.89 %. However, once the IOT replaced ratio reached 100 %, the values increased by about 76.24 % and 17.78 %, which was better than 0 % IOT. The CSM-IOT performed better than the porous basalt CSM at 90 d age. This means IOT can replace porous basalt fine aggregate as a pavement base.
