Uncontrolled proliferation is a defining feature of the malignant phenotype. Nevertheless, the supportive network provided by the stroma is indispensable for further invasion, progression and metastasis of cancer cells. In addition, the role of inflammation in tumorigenesis is now generally accepted, and it has become evident that an inflammatory microenvironment is an essential component of tumor progression. Since skin tumors are common and easily assessable lesions with features at various stages of tumorigenesis, they provide a wide scope for research in this field to further our understanding of fundamental and clinical carcinogenesis. Some of the basic aspects of epithelial tumorigenesis, invasion and stromal reaction are reviewed in this paper. (Ann Dermatol 23(2) 125∼131, 2011)

Aluminum brass tubing which is highly cost-effective and has a high heat transfer property has been widely used for seawater cooled condenser in Japan. However, the tubing suffers from erosion and corrosion on the inner surface in spite of ferric-ion injection and cathodic protection. Ammonia also attacks the outer surface after long years of service. Periodic replacement with new tubing has been performed. Titanium tubing which has high corrosion resistance, has been used in new condensers and for the air removal zone of the condenser. However, its service has been restricted due to higher cost and lower elastic modulus. As a countermeasure, we have developed a high performance ferritic stainless steel tubing called "Super Stainless: FS1O" which has excellent corrosion resistance and is highly cost-effective. First, the tubings were used experimentally in our Buzen thermal power station, Unit 2 condenser in 1993, and various investigations have been performed on the extracted tubing and tube sheet every year. Ammonia attack on the outer surface, corrosion and erosion on the inner surface, crevice corrosion between the tube and the tube-sheet. Hz absorption and degradation of properties was not observed. Based on these results, 1,006 pieces of FS1O were installed in Buzen thermal power station, Unit I condenser in 1996. The tubing has been used in seawater without any corrosion problems.

In vivo patch-clamp recordings were made from substantia gelatinosa neurons in the rat spinal dorsal horn to analyze plastic changes in sensory transmission which underlie hyperalgesia induced in ovariectomized rats. All substantia gelatinosa neurons examined exhibited spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) at a holding potential of -70 mV and inhibitory postsynaptic currents (IPSCs) at 0mV. Noxious or non-noxious mechanical stimuli applied to the ipsilateral hind limb elicited a barrage of EPSCs. The spontaneous and evoked EPSCs were depressed by a non-NMDA receptor antagonist, CNQX (10μM), suggesting that the mechanical sensory information is mediated by glutamate. The amplitude and frequency of EPSCs evoked by noxious or non-noxious stimuli were not significantly different. However, the amplitude of EFSCs evoked by noxious stimuli in ovariectomized rats was significantly larger than that of sham rats, although the frequency of EPSCs both in sham auld ovariectomized rat did not differ significantly. This plastic change in the amplitude of EPSCs may be due to a decrease in number of 5-HT receptor at C afferent terminals, which results in an increase in transmitter release from C afferent terminals.
Most Highly Cytokinergic IgEs Have Polyreactivity to Autoantigens

Purpose Monomeric IgE molecules, when bound to the high-affinity receptor, exhibit a vast heterogeneity in their ability to induce survival promotion and cytokine production in mast cells. At one end of this spectrum, highly cytokinergic (HC) IgEs can induce potent survival promotion, degranulation, cytokine production, migration, etc., whereas at the other end, poorly cytokinergic (PC) IgEs can do so inefficiently. In this study, we investigated whether IgEs recognize autoantigens and whether IgEs' binding of autoantigens correlates with difference s in HC versus PC properties. Methods Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were performed to test whether IgEs bind antigens. Histamine-releasing factor in human sera was quantified by western blotting. Cultured mast cells derived from human cord blood were used to test the effects of human sera on cytokine production. Results Most (7/8) of mouse monoclonal HC IgEs exhibited polyreactivity to double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), β-galactosidase, thyroglobulin and/or histamine-releasing factor. By contrast, mouse PC IgEs failed to react with these antigens. A human monoclonal HC IgE also showed polyreactivity to histamine-releasing factor, dsDNA and ssDNA. Interestingly, sera from atopic dermatitis patients showed increased reactivity to ssDNA and β-galactosidase and increased levels of histamine-releasing factor. Some atopic dermatitis patients, but not healthy individuals, had substantial serum levels of HRF-reactive IgE. Sera from atopic dermatitis patients with high titers of DNA-reactive IgE could induce several fold more IL-8 secretion in human mast cells than sera from healthy individuals. Conclusions The results show that most HC, but not PC, IgEs exhibit polyreactivity to autoantigens, supporting the autoimmune mechanism in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis.
Coal Type Selection for Thermal Power Plants through Combustion State Estimation

In this paper, a coal type selection method for a coal fired boiler in a thermal power station is proposed. Combustion of coal and fusibility of fly ash are evaluated by using coal and fly ash properties. Combustion state in a coalfired boiler is estimated by the evaluated combustibility of coal and fusibility of fly ash. Applicable coal type is selected by the estimated combustion state. The proposed coal type selection method is evaluated by the data collected in an actual thermal power plant.
