While turning from a planned to a market economy, foreign investment into Eastern Europe is gaining in importance. The stabilization programs require a cut in government to support loss making industries. With state industry declining and increasing unemployment the capability of these economies to generate new capital has been declining too.

<P>15-Hydroxprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH) mediates a colon neoplasia suppressor pathway, acting through metabolic antagonism of cyclooxygenase-mediated colon carcinogenesis. To determine whether the colon tumor prevention activity of 15-PGDH acts as a constant or variable effect among individuals, we determined whether 15-PGDH levels remain stable over subsite and time in the human colon, determined the extent of differences in 15-PGDH levels between different individuals, and determined whether 15-PGDH modulation mediates any part of the anti-colon tumor effect of aspirin.</P>
Invited Mini Review : Adult stem cell lineage tracing and deep tissue imaging

Lineage tracing is a widely used method for understanding cellular dynamics in multicellular organisms during processes such as development, adult tissue maintenance, injury repair and tumorigenesis. Advances in tracing or tracking methods, from light microscopy-based live cell tracking to fluorescent label- tracing with two-photon microscopy, together with emerging tissue clearing strategies and intravital imaging approaches have enabled scientists to decipher adult stem and progenitor cell properties in various tissues and in a wide variety of biological processes. Although technical advances have enabled time-controlled genetic labeling and simultaneous live imaging, a number of obstacles still need to be overcome. In this review, we aim to provide an in-depth description of the traditional use of lineage tracing as well as current strategies and upcoming new methods of labeling and imaging. Simultaneous bootstrap for all three parameters in random coefficient autoregressive models

In this paper we consider autoregressive processes with random coefficients and developbootstrap approaches that asymptotically work for the distribution of estimated autoregressiveparameter as well as for the distribution of estimated variances of the innovationnoise and the disturbance noise. We discuss how to obtain approximative residuals of theprocess and how to separate between the innovation and the disturbance noise in orderto be able to extend the classical residual bootstrap for autoregressive processes to the situationconsidered in this paper. Thereafter, we propose a wild bootstrap procedure as avariation of the residual bootstrap that uses estimated densities of the innovation and thedisturbance noise to generate bootstrap replicates of the data generating process. The consistencyof the bootstrap approaches is established and their performance is illustrated bya simulation study.
S&T collaboration in developing countries

An active policy role is suggested for collaboration that will enhance national level Science and Technology (S&T) capabilities. In contrast, some studies see a limited role of policy support for collaborative S&T research at the individual level (including research groups or institutional levels) due to their self-organizing nature. Two views on S&T collaboration look at different levels but existing research largely ignores the context of developing countries. This paper shows how S&T collaborations between Brazil and Korea have developed over the past two decades. The paper indicates the gaps between initiation and the actual establishment of collaborative research at national and individual levels, differences in the focus areas of research, differences in resources and project planning, and the nature of collaborations. Collaborative research activities at the national level were initiated before the individual level but activated later than the individual level; in addition, the focus areas of research were laid down earlier at the national level with individual collaborations focused on different areas. Project types remained different at each level (i.e. top-down and bottomup) or with a slightly changing mix. This study suggests appropriate policy measures (such as the timely and effective information collection of activities at different levels and proactive coordination) that could reduce the gaps in the timing and alignment of research areas. This paper also alludes to an evolutionary model to develop S&T collaboration among developing countries.
Exceptionally persistent Eurasian cold events and their stratospheric link

Persistent boreal winter cold spells (PCEs) can heavily strain the economy and significantly impact everyday life. While sudden stratospheric warmings are considered a precursor for Eurasian (EUR) cold events, these temperature extremes may occur during the full range of stratospheric variability. We investigate PCEs relative to the prevailing stratospheric polar vortex regime before their onset, with a particular focus on extremely weak (SSW) and strong (SPV) stratospheric winds by performing (lagged) composite analysis based on ERA5 reanalysis. On average, SPV PCEs that are concentrated over central EUR, are colder, shorter and set in more abruptly compared to SSW PCEs. A quasi-stationary, mid-tropospheric anticyclone over the Arctic Ocean that blocks warm air advection toward EUR is connected to the canonical downward progression of the negative North Atlantic Oscillation for SSW PCEs. In contrast, during SPV PCEs, the anticyclone is part of a Rossby wave having an origin co-located with negative wave activity flux anomalies over and being influenced by stratospheric wave reflection toward the North Atlantic. Its slow east-ward propagation is likely related to Arctic surface warming and unusually weak zonal winds over EUR.
