<P>A novel and effective method was devised for synthesizing a vertically aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) forest on a substrate using waste plastic obtained from commercially available water bottles. The advantages of the proposed method are the speed of processing and the use of waste as a raw material. A mechanism for the CNT growth was also proposed. The growth rate of the CNT forest was ~2.5 μm min<SUP>−1</SUP>. Transmission electron microscopy images indicated that the outer diameters of the CNTs were 20–30 nm on average. The intensity ratio of the G and D Raman bands was 1.27 for the vertically aligned CNT forest. The Raman spectrum showed that the wall graphitization of the CNTs, synthesized via the proposed method was slightly higher than that of commercially available multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). We expect that the proposed method can be easily adapted to the disposal of other refuse materials and applied to MWCNT production industries.</P>

The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) is used for contraception and treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding as well as endometrial hyperplasia and early endometrial carcinoma. A 48-year-old woman visited an Internal Medicine outpatient clinic due to significantly elevated CA-125 and CA-19-9 levels in a routine health examination. She had been using LNG-IUS for 3 years. Before LNG-IUS insertion, she suffered from heavy menstrual bleeding and severe dysmenorrhea. Her endometrial sampling and ultrasonographic imaging showed no evidence of endometrial carcinoma at the time of LNS-IUS insertion. After insertion, she complained of neither abnormal uterine bleeding nor dysmenorrhea. She received a routine health check-up every year and showed results within normal range until last year. To rule out pancreatic cancer due to significantly elevated CA-19-9 levels, her physician performed positron emission tomography–computed tomography, which demonstrated increased FDG uptake in the endometrial cavity. We obtained endometrial biopsy and found endometrial carcinoma in her uterus and performed radical hysterectomy with bilteral pelvic lymphadectomy. Permanent pathology confirmed endometrial carcinoma with lymph node metastasis. She received concurrent chemoradiation therapy. We emphasize the necessity of regular follow-ups with ultrasonography and assessment of serum tumor markers for the early detection of endometrial carcinoma, although rare, in women using LNG-IUS, including those without abnormal uterine bleeding.
Sonochemical Method for Fabricating a High-performance ZnO Nanorod Sensor for CO Gas Detection

ZnO nanorod-based gas sensors were fabricated via a sonochemical route, and their gas sensing characteristics, especially for CO gas, were examined by varying the diameter of the nanorods. The advantages of the proposed method are a high speed of processing and a low detection limit for CO gas. The sensors based on aligned ZnO nanorods on a substrate were highly sensitive to CO gas with a low detection limit of 1 ppm at 350 ℃. A complete regeneration was also observed. A mechanism for sensing CO gas on the surface of a ZnO nanorod is proposed.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We developed a diagnostic method for Parkinson's disease by simultaneously analyzing biogenic amines and their metabolites using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with integrated pulsed amperometric detection (RP-HPLC-IPAD) method. Dopamine (DA), 3, 4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), serotonin (5-HT), 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA), and homovanillic acid (HVA) were used as biomarkers to diagnose Parkinson's disease. All target components were detected with good sensitivity using sodium hydroxide (as a post-column eluent). The limit of detection (S<B>/</B>N <B>=</B> 3) and limit of quantification (S<B>/</B>N <B>=</B> 10) of the target components ranged from 0.020 to 2.400 ng and from 0.080 to 8.000 ng, respectively. The coefficients of linear regression ranged from 0.9996 to 1.0000, all inter-day and intra-day precision values were <3.43%, and the average recovery and RSD ranged from 97.55 to 103.60% and 0.22 to 4.79% for mice striatum samples. This method exhibited good selectivity, sensitivity, and reproducibility and can be used directly without any pretreatment steps. Ten species belonging to the genus Dicranopteris are distributed throughout the world and Dicranopteris pedeta (Houtt.) Nakaike is distributed in Korea. In this study, the antioxidant and anticancer activities of Dicranopteris pedeta aqueous extract was explored. Antioxidant activity of Dicranopteris pedeta aqueous extract was revealed with a range of 38% to 74% in the DPPH radicals test. The total polyphenols and flavonoids contents of aqueous extract were 92.5 ± 8.68 mg GAE/g and 28.04 ± 4.08 mg QE/g, respectively. Protocatechuic acid, gentisic acid, rutin, vanillic acid, hesperidin, oxyresveratrol, quercetin, and naringenin were detected by HPLC. Cytotoxicity test was conducted using MTT assay in normal cells 293T, cancer cells of YD-10B and HeLa. In the cytotoxicity test, aqueous extract did not show toxicity to normal cells but inhibited cancer cell proliferation. These results suggest that aqueous extracts of Dicroanopteris pedeta could potentially be developed as a functional cosmetics or anticancer agents.

Mallotus japonicus, belonging to Euphorbiaceae, has been known to possess various physiological activities such as anti-bacterial, anti-virus, and anti-inflammatory effects. This study was designed to investigate the anti-oxidative activity and anti-tumor effect of the Mallotus japonicus bark extracts with water and ethanol. The amount of total polyphenolic compounds was measured using gallic acid as a standard material. The ethanol extract showed higher contents (143.6±1.57 mg GAE/g) than the water extract (120.4±6.11 mg GAE/g). Based on this result, a modified DPPH assay was conducted for the free radical scavenging activities of water and ethanol extracts. The ethanol extract revealed 80% free radical scavenging activity, compared with the 60% activity of water extract. To identify the qualitative and quantitative analyses of ethanol extract, LC/MS/MS method was applied to 15 standard materials. The result showed the highest contents of bergenin and the existence of other materials except resveratrol and oxyresveratrol. Cytotoxicity test was performed with MTT assay. Whereas the ethanol extract showed no cytotoxicity to 293T of a normal cell, the effects of ethanol extract on Fadu cell (head and neck carcinoma cells) appeared to be toxic in a 125-250 μg/mL range of concentrations. These results imply the value of developing anti-oxidant and anti-tumor agents using the ethanol extract of Mallotus japonicus bark.

This study aimed to investigate the antioxidant and anticancer activities of the fermented extract of the dried pericarp of Camellia japonica L. (CJ). The antioxidant activity of the extract after fermentation by Aspergillus oryzae (A. oryzae) at different doses, times, and temperatures was slightly decreased compared with that of the unfermented extract. The total polyphenol content decreased significantly as fermentation time was increased at 30°C, but there was no significant change when the fermentation was performed for 72 hr at different temperatures. The total flavonoid content was not significantly changed by fermentation conditions. Evaluation of the anticancer activity of the A. oryzae-fermented extract revealed that there was no effect on the viability of immortalized 293T cells treated with the extract for 48 hr, but the viability of YD-8 and YD-10B oral cancer cells was significantly reduced. In addition, there was a significant increase in the expression of cleaved PARP and caspase 3, and in apoptotic (annexin V/PI-stained) cells. These results suggest that the water extract of dried pericarp of CJ has no anticancer activity, but gained anticancer activity following fermentation by A. oryzae; furthermore, the fermented extract may be a potential treatment for oral cancer.
Detectability of T-Measurable Diseases in Advanced Gastric Cancer on FDG PET-CT

Purpose Usefulness of FDG PET-CT in monitoring response in locally advanced gastric cancer has been reported. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the related factors to detect measurable diseases in advanced gastric cancer on FDG PET-CT. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 38 patients diagnosed as having advanced gastric cancer. We defined the measurable diseases when there was visualized tumor of which maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) was higher than $1.35^*SUVmax$ of liver + $2^*SD$ of liver SUV. We evaluated what kinds of factors from the clinicopathologic features were related to identifying measurable diseases. Results Of 38 patients with advanced gastric cancer, 18 (50 %) had measurable tumors on FDG PET-CT. Measurable tumors were significantly more frequent in well or moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma (70.5 % vs 35.3 %, p<0.05), in the tumors located at antrum or angle (66.7 % vs 29.4 %, p<0.05) and in the elderly group (age of 55 years old or more, 72.0 % vs 8.3 %, p<0.001) than the others, respectively. By multivariate analysis, age at diagnosis was the only independent predictor for the measurable disease on FDG PET-CT. Conclusion We found that age at diagnosis, as well as histologic types and location of tumors, were the affecting factors to detect measurable disease on FDG PET-CT in patients with advanced gastric cancer. Our study suggests that elderly patients of age of 55 years old or more can frequently have T-measurable disease on FDG PET-CT in advanced gastric cancer and FDG PET-CT will be helpful to monitor measurable disease.
