Yeats’s A Vision as a Map of Modernism

모더니즘은 거대한 끈적거리는 생물체와 같거나, 아니면 생태계의 하나의 움직임 같아서, 혹은 생존을 위해 투쟁하는 다양한 주의들 속의 변덕스러운 피막 같아서, 각 이즘은 과거의 이즘(피터 비어랙의 우스운 조어인데)이 되는 것을 피하려고 한다. 미 래파, 입체파, 추상, 신조형주의, 모두 허둥대면 서로를 잡아먹으려고 하는데, 이들 중 하 나는 서로 경합하는 이즘의 한 부분이나 일부를 삼키는데 성공하여 소화시켜 자신의 몸 의 일부를 형성한다. 내 생각에는 예이츠의 『환상록』(본인은 의도하지 않았지만) 조직 적인 약도 혹은 천체도가 되어서, 모더니즘의 여러 요소들을 통합하여 하나의 디자인을 만든다. Modernism can be understood as a huge blobby creature, more like an ecosystem than like a movement—a capacious membrane inside which various subordinate isms struggle for survival, each engaged in a desperate attempt to avoid becoming (as Peter Viereck joked) a wasm. Futurism, Cubism, Abstractionism, Neo-Plasticism all jostle there and try to eat each other up—one of them will often succeed in swallowing an appendage or two of some competing ism and incorporating the digested member into its own body. I believe that Yeats’s A Vision offers (though Yeats did not intend this) an organized schema or star-chart, fitting together the component isms of Modernism into a single design.

예이츠는 자신이 카멜레온의 길(호도스 카멜네온토스)이라 부르는 곳에 너무 깊이 방황하면 자신의 시가 파괴되지 않을까 걱정했다. 그 길에서는 상상력이 지나치게 넘쳐서 독자가 그 이미지들을 이해하지 못하게 되지 않을까 걱정했다. 그의 많은 희곡 작품에서 그는 이런 여러 이미지들을 실험한다. 그는 그가 읽은 페르시아 미술사에서 호도스 카멜레온토스와 동일한 이미지들을 발견했다. Yeats worried that his poetry might be destroyed if he wandered too far down what he called the hodos chameliontos, the chameleon road, in which the imagination became so replete, overstimulated, that it kept producing images in such profusion that the images became unintelligible. In a number of passages deleted from his plays, we can see Yeats experimenting with these wild profusions of images. In the art historical writings he studied, Yeats found visual analogues to the hodos chameliontos in the world of Persian art.

벨기에 극작가 모리스 매터링크는 새로운 드라마를 창조하기 위해서 셰익스피어와 입센을 연구하여, 가냘프고 다소 있을법하지 않은 주인공들을 괴롭히는 일종의 좀 몰인정한 운명론과 인생의 무의미성을 결합한다. 이런 종류의 극은 예이츠, 싱, 그리고 무엇보다 새뮤엘 베켓트를 예상하게 한다. 사실, 메터링크의 미궁 같은 성(城)의 무대장치는 많은 모더니스트 극의 이해 불가하거나 이해하기 어려운 무대장치를 예상케 한다. The Belgian playwright Maurice pondered Shakespeare and Ibsen in order to create a new sort of drama, combining a sense of the nothingness of human life with a sense of some implacable fatality that tortures the wispy, more-or-less non-existent characters. This sort of theatre anticipates that of Yeats, Synge, and, most of all, Samuel Beckett — indeed the labyrinthine designs of Maeterlinck’s castle-sets anticipate the incomprehensible or half-comprehensible plots and settings of many Modernist plays.
