The fundamental characteristics of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excited on mixed monolayers composed of self-assembled Ag and Au nanoparticles (AgNPs and AuNPs, respectively) were investigated. Mixed monolayered films were fabricated at the air-water interface at different mixing ratios. The films retained their phase-segregated morphologies in which AuNPs formed several 10 to 100 nm island domains in a homogeneous AgNP matrix phase. The LSPR bands originating from the self-assembled domains shifted to longer wavelengths as the domain size increased, as predicted by a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The FDTD simulation also revealed that even an alternating-lattice-structured two-dimensional (2D) AgNP/AuNP film retained two isolated LSPR bands, revealing that the plasmon resonances excited on each particle did not couple even in a continuous 2D sheet, unlike in the homologous NP system. The fluorescence quenching test of Cy3 and Cy5 dyes confirmed that the independent functions of AuNPs and AgNPs remained in the mixed films, whereas the AuNPs exhibited significantly higher quenching efficiency for the Cy3 dye compared with AgNPs due to the overlap of the excitation/emission bands of the dyes with the AuNP LSPR band. Various applications can be considered using this nanoheterostructured plasmonic assembly to excite spatially designed, high-density LSPR on macroscopic surfaces.

A Study on Darrieus-type Hydroturbine toward Utilization of Extra-Low Head Natural Flow Streams
Tanaka, Kei,Hirowatari, Kotaro,Shimokawa, Kai,Watanabe, Satoshi,Matsushita, Daisuke,Furukawa, Akinori Korean Society for Fluid machinery 2013 International journal of fluid machinery and syste Vol.6 No.3
A two-dimensional Darrieus-type hydroturbine system, installed with a wear for flow streams such as small rivers and waterways, has been developed for hydropower utilization of extra-low head less than 2m. There are several problems such as flow rate change and flowing wastes to be solved for its practical use in natural flow streams. In the present study, at first, a design guideline in the case of overflow or bypass flow is shown by using simple flow model. Next, in order to avoid the unexpected obstacles flowing into the hydroturbine, an installation of waste screening system is examined. It is confirmed that the screen is effective with some amount of bypass flow rate, however the output power is remarkably deteriorated.

The laser action was firstly demonstrated using 1-cyano-trans-1,2-bis-(4'-methylbiphenyl)ethylene (CN-MBE), that enhances its fluorescence from organic nanoparticle. The CN-MBE is not fluorescent and has enhanced fluorescence in aggregated nanoparticle state. CN-MBE doped PMMA film showed fluorescence over 400 ∼ 600 nm and spectral narrowed emission at 430 nm under pumping with a nanosecond pulsed laser at wavelength of 355 nm. CN-MBE:PMMA DFB laser waveguides were successfully fabricated, and lasing wavelength was over 430 to 490 nm. CN-MBE:PMMA DFB lasers showed laser threshold of 73 µJ/cm2 at the waveguide size of 15 mm × 100 µm × 5 µm. The output spectra had bandwidth as narrow as 60 pm FWHM, and suppressed fluorescence background of less than 0.5%. The maximum peak power and average power were estimated to be 5 W and 0.35 µW, respectively. The durability was as long as 1.7 × 104 shots/waveguide.

Background/Aims This study aims to evaluate the presence of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and to investigate the use of hypopharyngeal baseline impedance (BI) for assessing swallowing dysfunction and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) using hypopharyngeal multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH (HMII-pH) monitoring in neurologically impaired patients (NIPs). Methods The study population in this retrospective study comprised 20 NIPs (mean age, 36.1 ± 15.0 years; age range, 13-64 years) who underwent multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH (MII-pH), HMII-pH, and laryngoscopy using the Hyodo scoring method from December 2016 to April 2019. The MII-pH and HMM-pH parameters were compared in the NIPs, whereas hypopharyngeal BI values were compared between NIPs with ≥ 5 and < 5 in Hyodo scores. Correlations between the hypopharyngeal BI values and the Hyodo score were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation coefficient. A receiver operator characteristic curve was created to determine the optimum cut-off of hypopharyngeal BI value to discriminate SD. Results Three NIPs were diagnosed with pathological LPR and GERD by the HMII-pH monitoring. No significant differences in parameters were observed between MII-pH and HMII-pH monitoring. The correlation analysis demonstrated a significant negative correlation between the hypopharyngeal BI values and Hyodo scores. The optimal cutoff value for hypopharyngeal BI was 1552 Ω. Conclusions This study demonstrated the usefulness of HMII-pH monitoring in identifying NIP with pathological LPR. Considering the difficulties in performing examinations in NIPs, HMII-pH monitoring may be a potentially useful technique for the simultaneous evaluation of swallowing dysfunction, LPR, and GERD in NIP. Low head hydropower is one of realistic renewable energies. The Darrieus-type hydro turbine with an inlet nozzle is available for such low head conditions because of its simple structure with easy maintenance. Experimental and numerical studies are carried out in order to examine the effects of gap distances between the runner pitch circle and two edges of inlet nozzle on turbine performances. By selecting narrower gaps of left and right edges, the performance could be improved. From the results of two dimensional numerical simulations, the relation between the performance and flow behaviors around the Darrieus blade are discussed to obtain the guideline of appropriate inlet nozzle design.

In this report, we present a case in which good results were achieved by treatment using a free jejunal patch graft with virtual endoscopy (VE) assistance in a patient whose swallowing had failed to improve for 40 years after he mistakenly swallowed sulfuric acid, despite pectoralis major myocutaneous flap grafting and frequent balloon dilatation surgery. During the last 20 years, virtual computed tomography imaging has improved remarkably and continues to be used to address new challenges. For reconstructive surgeons, the greatest advantage of VE is that it is a noninvasive modality capable of visualizing areas inaccessible to a flexible endoscope. Using VE findings, we were able to visualize the 3-dimensional shape beyond the stenosis. VE can also help predict the area of the defect after contracture release.
