Desmoplastic ameloblastoma is a rare histologic variant of ameloblastoma. It shows important differences in anatomic distribution, histologic appearance, and radiographic findings compared with the general type of ameloblastoma. It is histologically characterized by an abundance of densely collagenous stroma and radiographically a mixed radiolucent-radiopaque lesion. We present three cases of desmoplastic ameloblastoma. All the patients complained on buccal swelling with or without pain and the sites of occurrence were the anterior and the premolar region. Plain radiographs showed mixed radiopaque-radiolucent lesion with ill-defined or diffuse sclerotic margin and no external root resorption. Additionally, CT scans revealed buccal expansion and relatively well-defined margin of the lesions. The clinical and radiographic features of the presented cases were compared with those of the desmoplastic ameloblastoma in the previous literatures. (Korean J Oral Maxillofac Radiol 2006; 36 : 63-8)

Background: Frontal sinus fractures are relatively rare. Their surgical management significantly differs depending on whether the posterior wall is invaded and the clinical features vary. A bicoronal incision or endoscopic approach can be used. However, the minimally invasive approach has been attracting attention, leading us to introduce a simple and effective surgical method using multiple-threaded Kirschner wires. Methods: All patients had isolated anterior wall fractures without nasofrontal duct impairment. The depth from the skin to the posterior wall was measured using computed tomography to prevent injury. The edge of the bone segment on the skin was marked, a threaded Kirschner wire was inserted into the center of the bone segment, and multiple Kirschner wires were gently reduced simultaneously. Results: Surgery was performed on 11 patients. Among them, seven patients required additional support for appropriate fracture reduction. Therefore, a periosteal elevator was used as an adjunct through a small sub-brow incision because the reduction was incomplete with the Kirschner wire alone. The reduction results were confirmed using facial bone computed tomography 1 to 3 days postoperatively. The follow-up period was 3 to 12 months. Conclusion: The patients had no complications and were satisfied with the surgical results. Here we demonstrated an easy and successful procedure to reduce a pure anterior wall frontal sinus fracture via non-invasive threaded Kirschner wire reduction.
Structural basis for the interaction between DJ-1 and Bcl-X<sub>L</sub>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>DJ-1 is a multifunctional protein associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) and tumorigenesis. In response to ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation, DJ-1 is translocated into the mitochondria, and its interaction with the mitochondrial protein Bcl-X<SUB>L</SUB> protects cells against death. In this study, we characterized the molecular interaction between DJ-1 and Bcl-X<SUB>L</SUB> by NMR spectroscopy. The NMR chemical shift perturbation data demonstrated that the oxidized but not the reduced form of DJ-1 binds to the predominantly hydrophobic groove surrounded by the BH1–BH3 domains in Bcl-X<SUB>L</SUB>. In addition, our results showed that the C-terminal α8-helix peptide (Cpep) of DJ-1 binds to the pro-apoptotic BH3 peptide-binding hydrophobic groove in Bcl-X<SUB>L</SUB> and, thus, acts as a Bcl-X<SUB>L</SUB>-binding motif. In combination with the NMR chemical shift perturbation data, a refined structural model of the Bcl-X<SUB>L</SUB>/DJ-1 Cpep complex revealed that the binding mode is remarkably similar to that of other Bcl-X<SUB>L</SUB>/pro-apoptotic BH3 peptide complexes. Characteristics of GMR-SV Sensor for Measurement of Mineral Contents in Edible Water

The mineral dissolution sensor system using GMR-SV and glass/Mg(200 ㎚) was prepared and characterized. The magnetic field sensitivity of GMR-SV to microscopic magnetic variation was about 0.8%/Oe. The change that occurs when Mg-film dissolves in water, the solubility of water, which is one of the basic properties of mineral water, was sensed by measuring the subtle variation of an electric current. In the case of edible water with Mg mineral added, bubbles were generated on the surface of the Mg film in the first 45 minutes, and the number of drops that were dissolved more rapidly than with the tap and DI waters later reduced to zero. For the edible water samples that each had different mineral Mg concentrations, the Mg solubility speed significantly differed. After injecting Mg film into the edible water, the magnetoresistance of the output GMR-SV signal decreased from a maximum of 45.4 Ω to a minimum of 43.6 Ω. The measurement time was within 1 min, giving the rate of change ΔR/Δt = 0.18 Ω/s. This measurement system can be applied to develop a mineral Mg solubility GMR-SV sensor that can be used to sense the change from edible water to reduced alkali.

Sebaceous carcinoma arising from sebaceoma

Sebaceous neoplasms are rare adnexal tumors that can present a challenge to clinicians. Only four cases of sebaceous carcinoma with sebaceoma have been reported in the literature. Herein, we describe the case of a sebaceous carcinoma originating from a sebaceoma in a solitary nodule of the posterior neck. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were strongly positive for epithelial membrane antigen and p53. It is possible that adnexal carcinomas may arise from malignant transformation of their benign counterparts as well as de novo. Malignant transformation was likely in this case because the lesion was composed of distinct benign and malignant components, and the benign component showed the typical histopathological features of sebaceoma. This case underscores the fact that partial and superficial biopsies sometimes may not provide the correct diagnosis. If a surgeon suspects malignancy based on a clinical examination, then it is mandatory to perform a deep biopsy.

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>We developed skin prick test (SPT) reagents for common inhalant allergens that reflected the real exposure in Korea. The study aim was to evaluate diagnostic usefulness and allergen potency of our inhalant SPT reagents in comparison with commercial products.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>We produced eight common inhalant allergen SPT reagents using total extract (Prolagen): <I>Dermatophagoides farinae, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus</I>, oak, ragweed, mugwort, <I>Humulus japonicus</I> pollens, as well as cat and dog allergens. We compared the newly developed reagents with three commercially available SPT reagents (Allergopharma, Hollister-Stier, Lofarma). We measured total protein concentrations, sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), major allergen concentration, and biological allergen potencies measured by immunoglobulin E (IgE) immunoblotting and ImmunoCAP inhibition test.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Diagnostic values of these SPT reagents were expressed as positivity rate and concordance rate of the results from ImmunoCAP allergen-specific IgE test in 94 allergic patients. In vitro analysis showed marked differences in protein concentrations, SDS-PAGE features, major allergen concentrations, and biological allergen potencies of four different SPT reagents. In vivo analysis showed that positive rates and concordance rates of Prolagen<SUP>®</SUP> SPT reagents were similar compared to the three commercial SPT reagents.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>The newly developed Prolagen<SUP>®</SUP> inhalant SPT reagents are not inferior to the commercially available SPT reagents in allergy diagnosis.</P>

Retrobulbar hemorrhage is a disastrous condition that can lead to permanent blindness. As such, rapid diagnosis and treatment are critical. Here, we report a patient who presented with retrobulbar hemorrhage following an orbital floor fracture. Restoration of inferior orbital wall with porous polyethylene implant was underwent. Four days after the orbital floor reconstruction, the patient smoked a cigarette outdoors in -3℃ weather. Cold temperature and smoking caused an increase in his systemic blood pressure. The elevated blood pressure increased intraorbital pressure to the extent of causing central retinal artery occlusion and exacerbated oozing. During exploratory surgery, 3 mL of hematoma and diffuse oozing without arterial bleeding were observed. Prompt diagnosis and treatment prevented vision impairment. Few studies have reported on the risk factors for retrobulbar hemorrhage. This case showed that daily activities, such as exposure to cold weather or tobacco smoking, could be risk factors for retrobulbar hemorrhage.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second-most prevalent neurodegenerative disease and is characterized by dopaminergic neuronal death in the midbrain. Recently, the association between alterations in PD pathology and the gut microbiota has been explored. Microbiota-targeted interventions have been suggested as a novel therapeutic approach for PD. Agathobaculum butyriciproducens SR79T (SR79) is an anaerobic bacterium. Previously, we showed that SR79 treatment induced cognitive improvement and reduced Alzheimer's disease pathologies in a mouse model. In this study, we hypothesized that SR79 treatment may have beneficial effects on PD pathology. To investigate the therapeutic effects of SR79 on PD, 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)- induced mouse models were used. D-Amphetamine sulfate (d-AMPH)-induced behavioral rotations and dopaminergic cell death were analyzed in unilateral 6-OHDA-lesioned mice. Treatment with SR79 significantly decreased ipsilateral rotations induced by d-AMPH. Moreover, SR79 treatment markedly activated the AKT/GSK3β signaling pathway in the striatum. In addition, SR79 treatment affected the Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway and its downstream target genes in the striatum of 6- OHDA-lesioned mice. Our findings suggest a protective role of SR79 in 6-OHDA-induced toxicity by regulating the AKT/Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway and astrocyte activation. Thus, SR79 may be a potential microbe-based intervention and therapeutic strategy for PD.
