Unstructured peer-to-peer (p2p) networks usually employ flooding search algorithms to locate resources. However, these algorithms often require a large storage overhead or generate massive network traffic. To address this issue, previous researchers explored the possibility of building efficient p2p networks by clustering peers into communities based on their social relationships, creating social-like p2p networks. This study proposes a social relationship p2p network that uses a measure based on Hebbian theory to create a social relation weight. The contribution of the study is twofold. First, using the social relation weight, the query peer stores and searches for the appropriate response peers in social-like p2p networks. Second, this study designs a novel knowledge index mechanism that dynamically adapts social relationship p2p networks. The results show that the proposed social relationship p2p network improves search performance significantly, compared with existing approaches.
The American Dream Gone Bad: Suicide and American Migrants in the Yokohama Treaty Port, 1859-1899

Much more is known about American immigration than American emigration. This article is a case study on American emigrants in the nineteenth century. The article treats Americans present in Yokohama, the main site for international migration in Japan in the second half of the nineteenth century, focusing on the American migrants and health. A noteworthy number of Americans appear to have taken their lives in the port. From 1859 to 1899, Yokohama was a treaty port. The article examines the American deaths in the context of the main socioeconomic and cultural forces that shaped daily life in the setting. Among other Western nations, the United States had forced the treaty port on Japan, largely for reasons of economic aggrandizement. The American deaths are first profiled (demographics, individual background, manner and means of the suicide act). The profile includes comparison with suicide patterns in the U.S. during the period. How the acts were understood by contemporaries-other international migrants in Yokohama and elsewhere in Japan and Americans at home-is then discussed. The article finds that several factors influenced understanding, including class, notions of citizenship, the role and power of the nation-state beyond national borders, popular culture practices in the homeland compared with those of co-nationals who had gone abroad, and Western perceptions of and attitudes towards "the East." The suicides by Americans in Yokohama were tragic individual physical acts which connected with a complex interplay of social, cultural, and economic forces engendered in the U.S. and internationally.
Fractional-N phase-locked loop for split and direct automatic frequency control in A-GPS

<P>A low-power mixed-signal phase-locked loop (PLL) is modelled and designed for the DigRF interface between the RF chip and the modem chip. An assisted-GPS or A-GPS multi-standard system includes the DigRF interface and uses the split automatic frequency control (AFC) technique. The PLL circuitry uses the direct AFC technique and is based on the fractional-N architecture using a digital delta-sigma modulator along with a digital counter, fulfilling simple ultra-high-resolution AFC with robust digital circuitry and its timing. Relative to the output frequency, the measured AFC resolution or accuracy is <5 parts per billion (ppb) or on the order of a Hertz. The cycle-to-cycle rms jitter is <6ps and the typical settling time is <30s. A spur reduction technique is adopted and implemented as well, demonstrating spur reduction without employing dithering. The proposed PLL includes a low-leakage phase-frequency detector, a low-drop-out regulator, power-on-reset circuitry and precharge circuitry. The PLL is implemented in a 90-nm CMOS process technology with 1.2V single supply. The overall PLL draws about 1.1mA from the supply.</P>

A decimation chain for multi-standard reconfigurable radios is presented for 900-MHz and 1,900-MHz dual-band cellular standards with a data interpolator based on the Lagrange method for adjusting the variable data rate to a fixed data rate appropriate for each standard. The two proposed configurations are analyzed and compared to provide insight into aliasing and the signal bandwidth by means of a newly introduced measure called interpolation error. The average interpolation error is reduced as the ratio of the sampling frequency to the signal BW is increased. The decimation chain and the multi-rate analog-to-digital converter are simulated to compute the interpolation error and the output signal-to-noise ratio. Further, a method to operate the above-mentioned chain under a compressed mode of operation is proposed in order to guarantee continuous packet connectivity for inter-radio-access technologies. The presented decimation chain can be applied to LTE, WCDMA, GSM multi-mode multi-band digital front-end which will ultimately lead to the software-defined radio.
