<P>Cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) has been covalently immobilized onto polyaniline-carboxymethyl cellulose (PANI-CMC) nanocomposite film deposited onto indium-tin-oxide (ITO) coated glass plate using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linker. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic and electrochemical studies have been used to characterize the PANI-CMC/ITO nanocomposite electrode and ChOx/PANI-CMC/ITO bioelectrode. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies reveal the formation of PANI-CMC nanocomposite fibers of size approximately 150 nm in diameter. The ChOx/PANI-CMC/ITO bioelectrode exhibits linearity as 0.5-22 mM, detection limit as 1.31 mM, sensitivity as 0.14 mA/mM cm2, response time as 10 s and shelf-life of about 10 weeks when bioelectrode is stored at 4 degrees C. The low value of Michaelis-Menten constant (K(m)) obtained as 2.71 mM reveals high affinity of immobilized ChOx for PANI-CMC/ITO nanocomposite electrode.</P>
Characterization of Microstructure of HAZs in As-Welded and Service Condition of P91 Pipe Weldments

Steels 9-12% Cr, having the high creep rupture strength are advocated for the modern low polluting thermal power plants. In the present investigation, the P91 pipe weldments have been characterized for microstructural responses in as-welded, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) and ageing conditions. The PWHT of welded samples were carried out at 760 °C for time of 2 h and ageing at 760 °C for 720 h and 1440 h, respectively. The effect of time has been studied on precipitates size, distribution of precipitates and grain sizes present in various zones of P91 steel weldments. The impact toughness and hardness variation of heat affected zone (HAZ) have also been studied in as-welded condition as well as at different heat treatment condition. A significant change was observed in grain size and precipitates size after each heat treatment condition. The maximum impact toughness of HAZ was obtained after PWHT at 760 °C for 2 h. The main phase observed in weld fusion zone in as-welded, PWHT and ageing conditions were M23C6, MX, M7C3, Fe-rich M3C and M2C. The unwanted Z-phase (NbCrN) was also noticed in weld fusion zone after ageing of 1440 h.

The present study describes how the effect of direction of welding is useful to minimize distortion in submerged arc welded double-sided fillet joints. In present work, angular distortion of 12 mm thick double-sided fillet welds was measured for same direction and reverse direction welding. It has been observed that the maximum magnitude of the angular distortion for reverse direction fillet welding is lower. Thermal history in horizontal and vertical plate of fillet welds was also measured for both same direction and reverse direction welding. After welding, the fillet welds were sectioned, polished and etched to measure the effect of direction of welding on weld bead geometry. To predict the temperature distribution and thermal history, a finite element (FE) elasto-plastic thermo-mechanical model has been developed for submerged arc welded double-sided fillet welds by using moving distributed heat source. The three-dimensional FE thermal model was verified by comparing peak temperature obtained with experimental values. The model results matched fairly well with experimental results with a variation of 6 percent for sample 1 and 7.5 percent for sample 2 for the maximum values of distortion, and a variation of 2-8 percent for peak temperatures in horizontal plate and 9 percent in web plate.

<P>ABSTRACT</P><P>We present <I>UBV I</I><SUB><I>c</I></SUB> CCD photometry of the young open cluster Be 59 with the aim to study the star formation scenario in the cluster. The radial extent of the cluster is found to be ∼10 arcmin (2.9 pc). The interstellar extinction in the cluster region varies between <I>E</I>(<I>B</I>−<I>V</I>) ≃ 1.4 to 1.8 mag. The ratio of total-to-selective extinction in the cluster region is estimated as 3.7 ± 0.3. The distance of the cluster is found to be 1.00 ± 0.05 kpc. Using near-infrared (NIR) colours and slitless spectroscopy, we have identified young stellar objects (YSOs) in the open cluster Be 59 region. The ages of these YSOs range between <1 and ∼2 Myr, whereas the mean age of the massive stars in the cluster region is found to be ∼2 Myr. There is evidence for second-generation star formation outside the boundary of the cluster, which may be triggered by massive stars in the cluster. The slope of the initial mass function, Γ, in the mass range 2.5 < <I>M</I>/M<SUB>⊙</SUB>≤ 28 is found to be −1.01 ± 0.11 which is shallower than the Salpeter value (−1.35), whereas in the mass range 1.5 < <I>M</I>/M<SUB>⊙</SUB>≤ 2.5 the slope is almost flat. The slope of the <I>K</I>-band luminosity function is estimated as 0.27 ± 0.02, which is smaller than the average value (∼0.4) reported for young embedded clusters. Approximately 32 per cent of Hα emission stars of Be 59 exhibit NIR excess indicating that inner discs of the T Tauri star (TTS) population have not dissipated. The Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) and <I>IRAS-HIRES</I> images around the cluster region are also used to study the emission from unidentified infrared bands and to estimate the spatial distribution of optical depth of warm and cold interstellar dust.</P>

Distinctions are usually drawn between social entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility based upon the implications, the impact, and the stimulus required. Limited empirical evidences are there in the existing literature to suggest any connect between social entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility. This article points out the efforts of development and encouragement of social entrepreneurship as a CSR activity by a large public listed coal mining and refining company. Company makes a significant contribution towards the overall coal production in India. The study field is concentrated around main basin located in Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh in India. Implications are drawn based upon the success observed in the initiative and future directions and explored.
Regioselective hydroxylation of isoflavones by Streptomyces avermitilis MA-4680

Screening of bacterial whole cells was performed for regioselective hydroxylation of daidzein and genistein. Among the strains examined, Streptomyces avermitilis MA-4680 showed high ortho-dihydroxylation activity to produce 3',4',7-trihydroxyisoflavone and 3',4',5,7-tetrahydroxyisoflavone from daidzein (4',7-dihydroxyisoflavone) and genistein (4',5,7-trihydroxyisoflavone), respectively. Using 100 mg cells (wet wt.) and 1% (v/v) Triton X100 in 1 ml of total reaction volume, where 100 μl of the substrate solution (0.5 mM in 10% (v/v) mixed solvent of DMSO:MeOH=3:7) was added to 900 μl of potassium phosphate buffer (100 mM, pH 7.2), a 16% molar conversion yield of 3',4',7-trihydroxyisoflavone was obtained from 0.5 mM daidzein after 24 h of reaction time at 28 <SUP>o</SUP>C and 200 rpm. Ketoconazole significantly (ca. 90%) inhibited the ortho-hydroxylation activity of daidzein, suggesting that cytochrome P450 enzymes putatively play roles in regiospecific daidzein hydroxylation. The analysis of the reaction products was determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and <SUP>1</SUP>H NMR.
Bilinear plate bending element for thin and moderately thick plates using Integrated Force Method

Using the Mindlin-Reissner plate theory, many quadrilateral plate bending elements have been developed so far to analyze thin and moderately thick plate problems via displacement based finite element method. Here new formulation has been made to analyze thin and moderately thick plate problems using force based finite element method called Integrated Force Method (IFM). The IFM is a novel matrix formulation developed in recent years for analyzing civil, mechanical and aerospace engineering structures. In this method all independent/internal forces are treated as unknown variables which are calculated by simultaneously imposing equations of equilibrium and compatibility conditions. In this paper the force based new bilinear quadrilateral plate bending element (MQP4) is proposed to analyze the thin and moderately thick plate bending problems using Integrated Force Method. The Mindlin-Reissner plate theory has been used in the formulation of this element which accounts the effect of shear deformation. Standard plate bending benchmark problems are analyzed using the proposed element MQP4 via Integrated Force Method to study its performance with respect to accuracy and convergence, and results are compared with those of displacement based 4-node quadrilateral plate bending finite elements available in the literature. The results are also compared with the exact solutions. The proposed element MQP4 is free from shear locking and works satisfactorily in both thin and moderately thick plate bending situations.

While predicting the welding distortion for a complex welded structure like the guide blade carrier assembly of power generation turbine, the traditional thermo-mechanical models commonly utilized for geometrically simple welded butt and T joints may not be adequate. For large and complex welded structures,the thermo-mechanical elasto-plastic analysis can be computationally prohibitive. Other than simplistic butt and T joints, the aforementioned distortion prediction technique is not so suitable to provide reliable results when applied to large complex 3-D welded structures. Hence, inherent strain method is proposed here to predict distortion in an outer ringof GBC (Guide Blade Carrier) of a steam turbine. Such welded outer rings of GBC are large welded structures having many welded joints of different weld geometries at several planes. In the present study, inherent strain based technique was utilized for the aforementioned welded structure in elastic finite element analysis for the accurate prediction of 3-D distortion patterns with reduced computational time. The predicted and measured values of 3- D distortions of GBC were observed to be in good agreement with the ones provided from the shop floor, indicating the adequacy of inherent strain based method for the prediction of welding distortion in large and complex welded structures. As part of this investigation, a suitable welding fixture was also designed and welding sequence was modified, which were verified through inherent stain method to aid in minimizing the distortion of welded GBC.
