        Web-based University Classroom Attendance System Based on Deep Learning Face Recognition

        Nowadays, many attendance applications utilise biometric techniques such as the face, fingerprint, and iris recognition. Biometrics has become ubiquitous in many sectors. Due to the advancement of deep learning algorithms, the accuracy rate of biometric techniques has been improved tremendously. This paper proposes a web-based attendance system that adopts facial recognition using open-source deep learning pre-trained models. Face recognition procedural steps using web technology and database were explained. The methodology used the required pre-trained weight files embedded in the procedure of face recognition. The face recognition method includes two important processes: registration of face datasets and face matching. The extracted feature vectors were implemented and stored in an online database to create a more dynamic face recognition process. Finally, user testing was conducted, whereby users were asked to perform a series of biometric verification. The testing consists of facial scans from the front, right (30 – 45 degrees) and left (30 – 45 degrees). Reported face recognition results showed an accuracy of 92% with a precision of 100% and recall of 90%.

        The Protective Effect of Maternal Folic Acid Supplementation on Childhood Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Case-control Studies

        Objectives: Maternal folic acid supplementation is considered mandatory in almost every country in the world to prevent congenital malformations. However, little is known about the association of maternal folic acid intake with the occurrence of childhood cancer. Hence, this study aimed to determine the effects of maternal folic acid consumption on the risk of childhood cancer. Methods: A total of 158 related articles were obtained from PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and ProQuest using standardized keywords, of which 17 were included in the final review. Results: Eleven of the 17 articles showed a significant protective association between maternal folic acid supplementation and childhood cancer. Using a random-effects model, pooled odds ratios (ORs) showed a protective association between maternal folic acid supplementation and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (OR, 0.75; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.66 to 0.86). However, there was no significant association between maternal folic acid supplementation and acute myeloid leukaemia (OR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.46 to 1.06) or childhood brain tumours (OR, 1.02; 95% CI, 0.88 to 1.19). Conclusions: Maternal folic acid supplementation was found to have a protective effect against childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Thus, healthcare professionals are recommended to provide regular health education and health promotion to the community on the benefits of folic acid supplementation during pregnancy.

        Effect of Barrier Height on the Design of Stepped Spillway using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics and Particle Image Velocimetry

        Three-dimensional stepped spillway problems are simulated numerically using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) to visualize the flow of water along the steps and its flow dynamics. In particular, two distinct scaled-down stepped spillway models were studied with each having barrier heights of 10 mm and 25 mm, respectively. The impact of varying the height of the barrier in the design of the stepped spillway is studied in terms of it flow pattern, flow dynamics, aeration efficiency and oxygenation performances. State-of-the-art particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiment was carried out to affirm the validity of SPH findings and it turns out that both the water flow patterns attained in the SPH and PIV are quantitatively comparable. Further quantitative analysis revealed that the flow velocities in both methodologies are in great consensus. Conclusively, this has demonstrated that the capability and reliability of SPH to precisely approximate the water using finite set of particles to model the flow along the stepped spillway. Both stepped spillway configurations show nappe flow regime as the water descends down the steps. Nonetheless, vigorous hydraulic jump phenomena that is associates with the formation of turbulence and vortices is prominently observed in the configuration with larger barrier height. Decisive SPH data obtained concluded that as the barrier height increases from 10 mm to 25 mm, the water flows down the steps faster at lower pressure value and the overall aeration efficiency is improved from 1.1% to 1.2%. The usage of the higher barrier would promote the occurrence of substantial air entrainment during water swirling that will increase the power dissipation in flow. Subsequently, this while lower the power drawn to achieve the desired aeration effect. Ultimately, this study has justified the critical influence of barrier height dimension on the stepped spillway flow behavior and aeration performance.

        Mediation of Distributive Justice on Dyadic Relationship between Leaders and Followers with Personal Outcomes

        Purpose – This study examined the relationship between dyadic relationship between leaders and followers (DRLF), distributive justice (DISJ), job satisfaction (JSTC), and organizational commitment (OGCM). Research design, data, and methodology – 200 sets of survey questionnaires were distributed to the employees at a municipal office in East Malaysia using purposive sampling technique. Only 60 percent or 115 questionnaires were returned to the researchers. The survey data were analysed using the SmartPLS due to its ability to deliver latent construct scores, handle small sample size problems and estimate relationship between many constructs in the hypothesized model. Results – The findings indicated that there is a significant correlated direct relationship between DRLF and DISJ and mediating relationship between DRLF, DISJ and personal outcomes, which are JSTC and OGCM. Conclusions – This study confirms that DISJ does act as an important mediating variable in the relationship between DRLF with JSTC and DRLF with OGCM. Other dimensions of personal outcomes, such as extra-role behaviour, job motivation and service quality should be considered in future study because they are found to be the important outcomes of the relationship between DRLF and DISJ. The importance of these issues need to be further advanced in future research.

        Current Classification of the Bacillus pumilus Group Species, the Rubber- Pathogenic Bacteria Causing Trunk Bulges Disease in Malaysia as Assessed by MLSA and Multi rep-PCR Approaches

        Bacillus pumilus is the causal agent of trunk bulges dis- ease affecting rubber and rubberwood quality and yield production. In this study, B. pumilus and other closely related species were included in B. pumilus group, as they shared over 99.5% similarity from 16S rRNA analysis. Multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) of five housekeeping genes and repetitive elements-based poly- merase chain reaction (rep-PCR) using REP, ERIC, and BOX primers conducted to analyze the diversity and systematic relationships of 20 isolates of B. pumilus group from four rubber tree plantations in Peninsular Malaysia (Serdang, Tanah Merah, Baling, and Rawa- ng). Multi rep-PCR results revealed the genetic profil- ing among the B. pumilus group isolates, while MLSA results showed 98-100% similarity across the 20 isolates of B. pumilus group species. These 20 isolates, formerly established as B. pumilus, were found not to be grouped with B. pumilus. However, being distributed within dis- tinctive groups of the B. pumilus group comprising of two clusters, A and B. Cluster A contained of 17 isolates close to B. altitudinis, whereas Cluster B consisted of three isolates attributed to B. safensis. This is the first MLSA and rep-PCR study on B. pumilus group, which provides an in-depth understanding of the diversity of these rubber-pathogenic isolates in Malaysia.

        Psychosocial stress and trauma during the COVID‐19 pandemic: Evidence from Bangladesh

        The COVID-19 outbreak has become a global health crisis affecting both the physical and mental health of people across the world. Likewise, the people of Bangladesh are going through a menacing mental health catastrophe with the outbreak of coronavirus that resulting in stress and trauma. Hence, this situation is altering people's lifestyles and generating complexities in psychological well-being. The study was based on the review of published articles and media reports related to stress and trauma during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh. A total of 10 peer-reviewed articles and 45 newspaper reports were included following an extensive literature search. The contents were searched on Google, Google Scholar, PubMed, local online newspapers, social networking sites, and different webpages and published articles in different journals on COVID-19 from March 5 to October 25, 2020. The review study finds that the mental health of people in Bangladesh has severely been affected by the outbreak of coronavirus. All of the government, voluntary, and civil organizations need to give further emphasis on psychosocial and bereavement counseling in order to support those experiencing mental shocks resulting from the COVID-19 crisis. There is the need to strengthen more consultative and collaborative efforts from all public health experts, social workers, psychologists, and policymakers in doing so. Social workers in this context will be able to make meaningful contributions in supporting those affected people to better adjust to the challenging situation.

        Adaptable Web Search User Interface Model for the Elderly

        The elderly population is rapidly increasing worldwide, but many face challenges in using digital tools like the Internet due to health and incapacity issues. Existing online search user interfaces (UIs) often overlook the specific usability needs of the elderly. This study proposes an adaptable web search UI model for the elderly, based on their perspectives, to enhance search performance and usability. The proposed UI model is evaluated through comparative usability testing with 20 participants, comparing it to the Google search UI. Effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction are measured using task completion time, error rate, and subjective preferences. The results show significant differences (p > 0.05) between the proposed web search UI model and the Google search UI. The proposed UI model achieves higher subjective satisfaction levels, indicating better alignment with the needs and preferences of elderly users. It also reduces task completion time, indicating improved efficiency, and decreases the error rate, suggesting enhanced effectiveness. These findings emphasize the importance of considering the unique usability needs of the elderly when designing search UIs. The proposed adaptable web search UI model offers a promising approach to enhance the digital experiences of elderly users. This study lays the groundwork for further development and refinement of adaptable web search UI models that cater to the specific needs of elderly users, enabling designers to create more inclusive and user-friendly search interfaces for the growing elderly population.

        One Stage Microsurgical Reconstruction with Chimeric Flap for Salvaging a Complex Hand Injuries

        Hand injuries, involving extensor tendon with carpal bone loss are catastrophic events. Reconstructive surgeons typically face difficulties in minimizing the number of operations, recovery period and restoring its functions with an acceptable aesthetic outcome. However, chimeric flap, which consists of multiple composite flaps from one of the sources of main vascular system is a promising option for reconstruction. This paper presents a case of near-amputated degloving injury over the extensor tendon with carpal bone loss on left hand due to road traffic accidents. The patient had a hand reconstruction with chimeric flap consisted of free fasciocutaneous anterolateral thigh flap and vascularized osteomyocutaneous iliac bone graft with tensor fascia lata from the lateral circumflex femoral vascular system. As a result, the hand functioned well and appeared aesthetically acceptable. Thus, this surgery is an effective option in recovering and reconstructing a complex and traumatic hand injury that involved multiple composite tissue defects.
