        Malayalam is Kerala's official language, south-western region of India mainly speak this language, and very less research has been done for designing Malayalam Unicode reader. The Unicode range of characters for Malayalam script is 0D00–0D7F. In this work, we are focusing on the script of Malayalam language and its Unicode required for coding in Hardware Descriptive Language. This paper covers the hardware design and implementation of Malayalam Unicode Reader (MUR) for Kairali scripts on Virtex-6 FPGA. This MUR design was tested with the device operating at frequency of 1THz, Capacitance has been varied from 1pF to 25pF with SSTL family (Stub Series Terminated Logic) with an interval of 5pf.

        Utility of screening tools to differentiate beta thalassemia trait and iron-deficiency anemia - do they serve a purpose in blood donors?

        BackgroundThe aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of the beta thalassemia trait (BTT) and differentiate it from iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) among blood donors.MethodsA total of 1,000 samples from blood donors were subjected to complete hemogram with red blood cell indices. Further, Mentzer index (MI) was calculated for samples with mean corpuscular volume (MCV) below 80 fL and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) below 27 pg. Samples with Mentzer index <12 were subjected to naked-eye single-tube red cell osmotic fragility test (NESTROFT) followed by hemoglobin electrophoresis in positive cases. Serum ferritin was assessed in NESTROFT-negative cases.ResultsThe prevalence of BTT among blood donors was 3.7% and that of microcytosis among donors was 8.6%. The prevalence of BTT among microcytic donors was 41.8% while that among those with IDA was 11.6%. A value of MI <13 was highly sensitive in the diagnosis of BTT. MI >13 was found to have both high specificity and high sensitivity for diagnosing IDA.ConclusionA moderately high prevalence of BTT was observed among blood donors. Presently, no screening program is mandatory for screening of BTT among blood donors. Indices like MCV, MCH, and Mentzer Index were thus found to be effective to screen for BTT and IDA among blood donors, and NESTROFT was a cost-effective mass screening method to differentiate BTT and IDA.

        바나듐 레독스 흐름전지용 접촉저항 감소 일체형 전극-분리판 조립체 개발

        분리판은 바나듐 레독스 흐름전지(VRFB) 스택 내 셀의 전기적 통로 및 구조적 지지 역할 수행하는 매우 중요한 부품 중 하나이다. 흑연 소재는 전기 전도성이 뛰어나 분리판에 주로 사용되지만, 셀 스택에서 전극과 분리판 사이에 높은 계면 접촉 저항(ICR)이 발생하여 VRFB의 성능에 심각한 제한이 존재한다. 본 연구에서는 ICR의 한계를 해결할 수 있는 일체형 전극-분리판 조립체를 개발하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 일체형 조립체는 핫 프레스 방법을 활용하여 열가소성 및 열경화성 폴리머와 단일 탄소 펠트를 사용하여 제작하였다. 실험 결과, 일체형 조립체가 연속적인 전기 경로로 인해 감소된 전체 저항을 나타냄을 확인하였다. 또한, 충/방전 셀 테스트 결과에서 일체형 조립체는 향상된 셀 성능을 보여주었다. 따라서 개발된 일체형 전극-분리판 조립체는 기존의 분리판 및 전극 조립체를 대체할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. The bipolar plate is a crucial element of the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) as it serves as both the electrical conduit and the structural support for the cell within the VRFB stack. Although, the graphite material is primarily used for the bipolar plate due to its excellent electrical conductivity, a significant limitation of performance of the VRFB is present due to high interfacial contact resistance (ICR) arises between the electrode and bipolar plate in the cell stack. This study aims to develop an integrated electrode-bipolar plate assembly that will address the limitations of the ICR. The integrated assembly was constructed using a single carbon felt with thermoplastic and thermoset polymers utilizing hot press method. Experimental results verify that the bipolar plate assembly exhibits reduced area specific resistance (ASR) due to the continuous electrical path. Additionally, from the charge/discharge cell test results, the integrated assembly shows improved cell performance. Therefore, the developed integrated electrode-bipolar plate assembly can serve as a substitute for the conventional bipolar plate and electrode assembly.

        A facile route to ionic liquids-functionalized ZnO nanorods for the fluorometric sensing of thiabendazole drug

        <P>In this report, we introduce a simple and cost-effective hydrothermal method for the functionalization of ZnO nanorods with three different ionic liquids (ILs (1-3)) to check their sensing response with various drugs including thiabendazole, phenylbutazone, chloramphenicol, neomycin, and theophylline through fluorescence spectroscopy. The rod like-microstructure and hexagonal wurtzite structure of synthesized ZnO nanorods were examined with SEM-EDS and XRD techniques. On the other hand, ionic liquids-functionalized ZnO nanorods (ILs (1-3)/ZnO) exhibited various self-organized (layered-sheet similar to IL1, distorted nanorods similar to IL2, peanut beaded surface similar to IL3/ZnO) structures due to the intercalation of ILs on the surface of ZnO nanorods. Compared to ZnO nanorods, similar to ILs (1-3)/ZnO nanorods showed a blue shift in UV-absorption band which resulted to the variation in optical bandgap values. Ionic liquids-functionalized nanorods samples (ILs (1-3)/ZnO) have been selected for their recognition behaviour with available drug molecules using fluorescence spectroscopic technique. Interestingly, with the addition of thiabendazole drug molecules to two samples (ILs (1,3)/ZnO), a significant response corresponding to the peaks at similar to 350 nm and similar to 357 nm was observed, which led to the development of fluorescent sensors with a detection limit of 12 and 304 nM, respectively.         Comparative Efficacy of Synthetic and Natural Tenderizers on Quality Characteristics of Restructured Spent Hen Meat Slices (RSHS)

        In the present study, comparative efficacy of natural as well as synthetic tenderizers on the quality characteristics of restructured spent hen meat slices (RSHS) was studied. Four different batches of RSHS viz. Control (without any tenderizer), T1 (1.25% calcium chloride replacing salt in formulation), T2 and T3 (1.5% each of pineapple rind and fig powder, replacing binder in the formulation) were developed in pre-standardized formulation. Vacuum tumbling was performed for 2.5 h and cooked product (RSHS) was assayed for quality attributes. Samples were packaged in aerobic conditions, stored for 21 days under refrigeration (4±1℃) and were evaluated for pH, oxidative and microbial quality parameters at regular interval of 7 days. Water holding capacity of T2 was recorded the highest and significantly higher (p<0.05) than all other samples. The textural attributes of T2 were comparable to T1 but significantly higher (p<0.05) than C and T3. The colour attributes (L*, a*, and b* value) of T2 and T3 were improved due to use of natural tenderizers. During sensory evaluation, tenderness scores for T2 samples were recorded the highest. Throughout storage period, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), free fatty acids (FFA) and peroxide value (PV) followed an increasing trend for control as well as treated products; however, T2 showed a significantly (p<0.05) lower value than control and other treated samples. It can be concluded that good quality RSHS with better storage stability could be prepared by utilizing 1.5% pineapple rind powder as natural tenderizer.
