      • HOT-SMOKE TESTS IN TWO UNDERGROUND RAILWAY STATIONS WITH MOVING TRAINS

Allan,Hugh 한국화재소방학회 1997 한국화재소방학회 학술대회 논문집 Vol.1997 No.-

Hot-smoke testing in Australia has progressed to the stage where there is an Australian Standard for these tests. The purpose of such tests is twofold: firstly they can validate computer modeling predictions for smoke movement, and secondly they can demonstrate that the smoke control systems and associated fire safety systems function satisfactorily. Hot-smoke tests were carried out in March 1997 at two of Sydney's underground railway stations, namely St James and Museum. The purpose of the tests was to demonstrate that the smoke control systems performed their functions as intended. Tests were carried out in the concourses and on the platforms, and trains ran during the tests so that the effect of moving trains on smoke movement could be observed. A total of five tests were carried out and video recordings were taken of each. This is the first time that hot-smoke tests have been carried out in an underground station with trains running. The paper discusses some of the interesting observations and the problems identified by the tests.

      • Golf and Skin Health: A Narrative Review

        Allan G. Matthews(Allan G. Matthews ),Hannah Preston(Hannah Preston ),Andrew Murray(Andrew Murray ),Roger Hawkes(Roger Hawkes ) 사피엔시아 2018 Exercise Medicine Vol.2 No.-

Objectives: Recent studies have reported that playing golf has overall physical and mental health benefits. Through being placed in the sun for extended periods of time, the golfing population faces an increased risk of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) associated skin problems, most importantly skin cancer. Our aim was to collate and summarise current literature on the relationship between golf and skin cancer. Methods: We searched multiple web-based, health-focused databases (Medline, Embase, Cinahl, Web of science, Scopus, Sportdiscus, UK clinical trials, Current controlled trials and Prospero) to identify records. Relevant papers were critically appraised and reported using a descriptive analysis. Results: A total of 11 studies are included in the review. Golf is associated with relatively more UVR exposure than other outdoor activities such as fishing, tennis, pool swimming, cricket, gardening, ‘sun-worshipping’ and sailing. Calculated relative risk of non- melanoma skin cancer, based on cumulative UV exposure, is higher in golfers than non-golfers. Mid morning tee-times or playing golf between 11am -3pm associated with highest UVR exposures. Golfers can be exposed to potentially harmful levels of UVR during play in winter at some latitudes. Vertex (scalp), shoulders, back, back of neck and posterior arms exposed to more UVR than front of body during play. Common golf attire is of limited value in protecting the neck. Targeted skin cancer skin cancer prevention and early detection campaigns are well received among the golfing population. Conclusions: Overall, playing golf is associated with longevity and both physical and mental health benefits. Studies to date indicate that golfers (professionals > recreational players) are exposed to potentially harmful levels of UVR during play, but the true morbidity/mortality associated with this exposure is not known. Playing golf should be encouraged in all age groups, though golfers, the golf industry and policy makers should act to minimize the harmful effects of UVR exposure, and have they have ability to also be hugely influential on an important public health message.

When is similar different? When is different similar? A review of language assessment foci of selected Philippine English language textbooks

        Allan B. de Guzman,Rowena Marie R. Chua,Geline R. Cruz,Jeanno Lorenz G. Dinglasan,Mary Noll P. Giliberte,Mary Anne G. Martin 한국교육개발원 2012 KEDI Journal of Educational Policy Vol.9 No.2

The centrality of textbooks in basic education calls for periodic assessment of their pedagogical, substantial and assessment features, thus ensuring optimum development of students—the end-users of all educational efforts. Cognizant of the fact that textbooks define the backbone of “micro” organizations for classroom activities (Schmidt, McKnight, & Raizen, 1997), this exploratory undertaking is aimed at identifying the dominant emphasis of a select group of Philippine textbooks in English with regards to macro skills, facets of understanding, and learning strategies. A total of 12 textbooks across four curriculum levels published from 2004 to 2006were subjected to content analysis. Results indicate that Philippine English language textbooks put a premium on the writing and reading skills of students. There is continuing emphasis on the knowledge aspect of language assessment strategies, leaning toward behaviorism. Cognitive strategies are extensively employed along with memory strategies. Policy implications of the study are also discussed in this paper.

Employment and employability profile of a select group of Filipino college graduates

Allan B. de Guzman,Belinda V. de Castro 한국교육개발원 2008 KEDI Journal of Educational Policy Vol.5 No.1

Graduates are exhorted to develop personal skills, qualities, and experiences that enable them to compete in the labor market (Moreau & Leathwood, 2006; McQuid & Lindsay, 2005). This graduate tracer study (GTS) creates an empirical portrait that describes the employment aspects of the graduates of a comprehensive university in the Philippines during the years 2001‐2004 to identify policy imperatives for greater relevance of higher education curricula to industry needs and expectations. A sample of 540 randomly selected graduates representing various disciplines participated in this study. Data were gathered through a survey instrument developed by a pool of experts identified by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in the Philippines. Data were treated in‐depth through descriptive and inferential statistics. Graduates of the institution under study pursue advanced studies and other work‐related training. The impressive employability profile of comprehensive university graduates to middle level management positions particularly those representing the social behavioral sciences, natural sciences, medical fields, engineering and technology and mass communication is brought about not by the academic honors of the graduates but through capabilities such as knowledge, skills and attitudes used in work places. There is a need to develop a more functional framework for employability where the diversity of fields of study offered in universities are linked to the diversity of employment is also discussed in this paper.

Working time optimal planning of construction site served by a single tower crane

Allan Tubaileh 대한기계학회 2016 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.30 No.6

We present a method for optimizing the layout of single tower crane and supply material locations. The crane is treated as a robot with multi degrees-of-freedom and the displacement of each joint is expressed as a cubic spline. A mathematical model is developed to generate working time optimized crane operations. Both kinematics and dynamic models are presented to describe the crane motion requirements and limitations. The constraints imposed on crane velocity, acceleration, jerk and power are considered in order to provide efficient planning and scheduling of crane operations, as well as improving the general performance and safety aspects of the crane. Solutions of the presented problem are composed of continuous and discrete variables. The continuous variables are obtained by solving the nonlinear optimization model using the NAG optimization toolbox. On the other hand, a simulated annealing algorithm is developed to obtain the discrete variables. To demonstrate the feasibility of the presented method, numerical examples have been tested and compared with other crane optimal planning methods.

      • Taekwondo: Fact or Fiction?

( Allan Back ) 국제태권도학회 2017 International Symposium for Taekwondo Studies Vol.2017 No.-

Many doctrines in the martial arts are historically false, such as the superhuman prowess of the founders and masters of a martial art, and, more to the point here, the formation of Taekwondo. Yet, although I do largely reject the truth of many claims made in these teachings, based upon the available historical evidence, at the same time I do not want to disparage these doctrines. Rather, I want to treat them as myths. Myths serve important functions in the martial arts as in other areas of our lives. They provide us motivation, ideals to strive for, an orientation into a tradition. I shall discuss some of these functions. When it comes to pedagogy, again the issue of how factual the material to be presented should be arises. Strictly speaking, from the perspective of the current field of knowledge in question, a lot of the claims made in textbooks are just false. Simplified theory is presented as fact; many controversies in the field are just ignored; the science is outmoded. This happens by necessity: a beginner cannot absorb the full field. Furthermore, education has more functions than the inculcation of technical skill. As pedagogy includes socialization into cultural traditions as well, again myth will have its functions there too. The same is true for teaching Taekwondo. In conclusion, I shall focus on how much truth and reality we should insist upon in teaching and in our understanding of myth. Certain Asian cultures seem comfortable with more realism than Western ones. I conclude that the discrepancy is based on differing aesthetic standards: the Western demanding completion and perfection of the artifact; the Asian admiring artifacts with imperfections and incompleteness. I opt for the realism of the latter.
