        The top 10 things to know about transfusion medicine before intern year: an evidence-based course for graduating medical students

        BackgroundTransfusion medicine (TM) knowledge varies widely among physician trainees. In addi-tion, there have been few instances in which curricular changes have been meaningfully assessed for TM education in medical school.MethodsWe created and presented a novel lecture to improve TM knowledge for graduating medi-cal students using eight objectives designed to reinforce critical information about blood management. Each objective was coded according to unique color schemes, fonts, and graphics to create visual associations while quickly and clearly presenting complex concepts. The validated BEST Collaborative exam was used to measure changes in student TM knowledge, while a survey was conducted to gauge changes in confidence for each objective. Students were asked to submit anonymous feedback about their experiences. ResultsThe mean student post-course exam score was 50.0%, while the pre-course baseline score was 27.5% (P<0.0001). Mean confidence levels increased significantly for all objectives. Student feedback was universally positive.ConclusionThis study improved knowledge and confidence for graduating medical students by utiliz-ing engaging and visually stimulating presentations to display high-impact TM material. However, further efforts are needed to optimize learning.

      • Advanced power electronics enabled distribution architectures

        This paper explores how highly reliable power distribution architectures can be implemented, operated and controlled. Potential applications for advanced power distribution architectures include advanced micro-grid enabled smart grids, electric ships, and data centers. The analysis discusses power electronics circuit topologies and system wide architecture design. Some of the possible power architectures included radial, ring, and laddered topologies. Some commented relevant alternatives for any of these power architectures include ac and dc distribution systems. Although it is identified that dc architectures are more advantageous than ac power distribution systems in terms of efficiency, availability, flexibility, and components power density, dc systems present issues with fault detection and clearance. An option involving multiple-input multiple-output converters that addressed these issues with dc architectures is commented in this paper. The discussion presents some suitable topologies for these converters including one derived from a multiple-input boost converter and another one realized from a multiple-input fly-back converter. In the proposed architectures multiple-input multiple-output converters are placed in key distribution nodes and act as “power routers” by freely controlling all input and output powers. These power routers allow to address issues related with fault detection and clearance in distributed power architectures through internal over current protection mechanisms.

        이 글은 한국에 대해 일본이 벌인 사과의 정치학의 근래 역사를 살핀 것이다. 독일과 비교했을 때 일본의 무능 혹은 태도에 기존의 논의들이 초점을 맞춘 데 이런 관점에서 일본의 국제법적 기준을 따르는 사과의 나라임을 주장하고 있다. 이런 관점에서 일본의 대한관계를 분석할 때에 전체적으로 그 사과의 결함이 노출된다. 이 점은 앞으로 큰 주의를 기울어야 할 대상이다. “불행한 역사”라는 사과의 의미는 과거를 불특정한 시간으로 냉동 시켜, 아무도 책임이 없었거나 없는 것이 되어버린다. 더욱이, 이 전략의 “전향적인” 축은 동시에 가장 강력한 사과의 기술로 등장했다. 희생자들, 운동가들 그리고 동조자들 모두 국가의 “전향적인” 사과의 기술을 조사해야 한다. 왜냐하면 그것은 희생자들이 추구하는 존엄을 희생하고, 국가를 강화시키기 때문이다. 약간의 생존자들이 아직 남아 있는 지금, 사과의 함정에 관심을 기울어야 한다. This paper considers the recent history of Japan's engagement in the politics of apology with South Korea. Although most discussions of Japan and apology focus on Japan's inability to apologize or compare Japan's behavior with Germany, this essay argues that Japan is an apologetic nation according to international standards. Analyzing the country's official relationship with South Korea from this perspective reveals various shortfalls of apology in general that merit critical attention now. The apologetic notion of "unhappy history" has frozen the past into an indeterminate time period for which no one was or is to blame. Moreover, the "forward-facing" spin of this strategy emerged as the most powerful apologetic technique at play. Victims, activists, and their sympathizers alike should interrogate the state's "forward-facing" apologetic technique because it is currently fortifying the state at the expense of the dignity that victims seek. Apology's pitfalls deserve consideration now, while some of the survivors are still alive.

        Bioactivity of Peptides Released During Lactic Fermentation of Amaranth Proteins with Potential Cardiovascular Protective Effect: An In Vitro Study

        Fermentation has shown to be an effective technique in bioactive peptides release. That is why in this study antihypertensive, antithrombotic, and antioxidant activity was evaluated during amaranth proteins fermentation with Lactobacillus casei Shirota and Streptococcus thermophilus 54102 in mono and combined culture. During fermentation an increase of free amine groups was observed, and no statistical differences among monocultures were shown, getting higher concentration in combined culture. This was related to antihypertensive and antioxidant activities, where the highest values were also found in the combined process (45% of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition, and 168 μmol Trolox equivalents per liter [TE/L] for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, 268 μmol TE/L for 2,2′-azino-bis 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid, and 381 μmol Fe2E/L for ferric reducing ability of plasma). On the contrary, antithrombotic activity was not related to free amine groups during fermentation, having the highest bioactivity in different moments in each experiment. L. casei Shirota and S. thermophilus 54102 are strains that are able to release bioactive peptides from amaranth protein, although amaranth is not a common matrix for the development of lactic acid bacteria. In addition, in this study it was observed for the first time that lactic acid strains are able to release bioactive peptides from amaranth protein. In addition, this methodology could be part for the development of fermented beverages, different from fermented milk, to diversify matrix to obtain a novel functional food.

        Detecting Building Entrances on Street View Images Using Deep Learning for Supporting Indoor-Outdoor Seamless Services

        Spatial data is important for virtually representing the real world and is essential in developing applications for making informed decisions. With the growing interest in seamless indoor-outdoor environments, spatial data from different sources exists in various formats for use in LBS (Location-Based Services). Previous research has utilized deep learning for indoor omnidirectional images to generate NRS (Node-Relation Structure), a network-based topological data, for supporting spatial analysis for navigation while providing visualization. This study proposes an approach to detect building entrances in street view omnidirectional images through a deep learning-based object detection algorithm for supporting indoor-outdoor LBS. This paper focuses on formulating refinement conditions for constructing an image training dataset that combines both an open dataset and directly captured omnidirectional images to address the challenge of establishing a huge volume of images for training the object detection model. By applying the conditions, the mAP (mean Average Precision) of 61.20% obtained from training with open data increased to 85.72%, and applying image augmentation methods improved the mAP to 87.42%. These results show that the proposed conditions can be used as a framework for constructing generalized training data that results in accurate entrance detection in street view images, regardless of the study area.

        Durability of Polymer Gear-Paired with Steel Gear Manufactured by Wire Cut Electric Discharge Machining and Hobbing

        In the recent years, utilization of non-standard gears have increased due to the improved load carrying capacity and improved durability. However, these non standard gears are manufactured by non-conventional manufacturing process including wire cut electric discharging machining (WEDM). Standard gears are manufactured by conventional machining process, hobbing. This work reported the performance of injection molded polymer gear paired with a steel gear manufactured by conventional hobbing and wire cut electric discharge machining process. WEDM steel gear surface exhibited poor surface topology and higher hardness when compared to that of conventional machined steel gear. Measured net surface temperature of polymer gear at various loads (2-3 Nm) confirmed a temperature rise of 10-15°C when paired with WEDM gear compared to that of hobbed and ground gear. Polymer gear paired with WEDM exhibited inferior fatigue performance when compared to the polymer gear paired with hobbed and ground gear.

        Application of C5 inhibitors in glomerular diseases in 2021

        The complement pathway is an essential mechanism in innate immunity, but it is also involved in multiple pathologies. For kidney diseases, strong evidence of a dysregulation in the alternative pathway in atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) led to the use ofeculizumab, the first anti-C5 inhibitor available in clinical practice. Intensive fundamental research resulted in the development ofsubsequent new drugs, such as long-acting C5 inhibitors, oral medications, or antagonists of C5aR, the receptor for C5a. New data inthe domain of C5-inhibition in glomerular diseases are still limited and mainly focus on 1) the efficacy of ravulizumab, a long-actingC5 inhibitor in aHUS, and 2) the use of avacopan, a C5aR antagonist, in antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody vasculitis. Several newstudies ongoing or planned for the next few years will evaluate the efficacy of C5 inhibition in secondary thrombotic microangiopathy,C3 glomerulopathy, membranous nephropathy, or immunoglobulin A nephropathy.

        Out-of-plane elastic buckling of truss beams

        In this article we will present a method to directly evaluate the critical point of a non-linear system by using the solution of a polynomial eigenvalue approximation as a starting point for an iterative non-linear system solver. This method will be used to evaluate out-of-plane buckling properties of truss structures for which the lateral displacement of the upper chord has been prevented. The aim is to assess for a number of example structures whether or not the linearized eigenvalue solution gives a relevant starting point for an iterative non-linear system solver in order to find the minimum positive critical load.
