Experimental investigation on ejector cooling system performance at low generator temperatures and a preliminary study on solar energy

        R. Yapıcı,F. Akkurt 대한기계학회 2012 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.26 No.11

In this paper, the performance of an ejector cooling system with constant-area mixing chamber was investigated at low generator temperatures. The cooling system was tested by using hot water as driving fluid and R123 as working fluid. The effects of operating temperatures on the cooling capacity and on the coefficient of performance (COP) of the system were experimentally investigated at an ejector area ratio of 7.17, which is suitable for solar cooling. As a result, COP of 0.42 was obtained at a vapor generator temperature of 74°C, evaporator temperature of 10°C, and at a critical condenser temperature of 29°C. A solar application of the system with singleglazed selective-type collectors in a horizontal position was conducted as a preliminary study. In the solar application, a cooling capacity of 1080 W for a 9.2 m2 collection area at an evaporator temperature of 10°C was obtained.

Swirling flow analysis of Eyring–Powell fluid between coaxial disks with variable property

        Nadeem Sohail,Ishtiaq Bushra,Akkurt Nevzat,Eldin Sayed M 한국CDE학회 2023 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.10 No.2

The main objective of this study is to examine an unsteady swirling flow of a non-Newtonian Eyring–Powell fluid between two coaxial disks. The lower and upper disks are considered to rotate with different angular velocities. The three-dimensional axisymmetric flow phenomenon and heat transfer mechanism are observed with the consequences of the magnetic field and variable thermal conductivity of the fluid. The variable thermal conductivity is taken to be dependent on the fluid temperature. The implementation of the Von Karman similarity transformations on the constituting equations of the flow phenomenon yields the dimensionless system of the non-linear equations. An optimal homotopy analysis technique is adopted to obtain analytical solutions for highly non-linear equations. In view of the same and opposite directions of disks rotation, the various aspects of the flow system corresponding to the pertinent parameters are discussed with physical significance. The obtained results indicate that both radial and axial fields are the escalating functions of the Eyring–Powell fluid parameter. Moreover, the heat transfer rate enhances with the improving variable thermal conductivity parameter.

      • Clinical Characteristics, Treatment and Survival Outcomes in Malignant Mesothelioma: Eighteen Years' Experience in Turkey

Berk, Serdar,Dogan, Omer Tamer,Kilickap, Saadettin,Epozturk, Kursat,Akkurt, Ibrahim,Seyfikli, Zehra Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.11

Background: Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is an insidious tumor with poor prognosis, arising from mesothelial surfaces such as pleura, peritoneum and pericardium. We here aimed to evaluate the demographic, clinical, and radiological features of patients with MM followed in our center as well as their survival. Methods: The study included 228 patients (131 male, 97 female) who were followed up in our institution between 1993 and 2010 with the diagnosis of MM. Results: The mean age was 59.1 years in men and 58.7 years in women and the sex ratio was 1.4:1 in favor of males. Environmental asbestos exposure was present in 86% of the patients for a mean duration of $40{\pm}20$ years (range: 3-70). Pleural effusion and thoracic/abdominal pain were the most common presenting signs and symptoms (70.2% and 57.8%, respectively). One hundred-thirteen (66%) patients were treated with platinum-based combination chemotherapy (PBCT) plus supportive care (SC) and 67 (34%) patients received SC alone. The median follow-up time was 10.0 months. The median overall survival was significantly improved with PBCT plus SC compared to SC alone (11.4 vs. 5.1 months; p=0.005). The 6, 12, 18, and 24-month survival rates were significantly improved with PBCT plus SC compared to SC alone (72%, 43%, 19%, and 2% vs. 49%, 31%, 11%, and 1%). Conclusion: The survival of patients with MM improved in patients treated with PBCT. The survival advantage continued 12- and 24-month after the initial time of combination chemotherapy.

The influence of MgO on the radiation protection and mechanical properties of tellurite glasses

        Hanfi, M.Y.,Sayyed, M.I.,Lacomme, E.,Akkurt, I.,Mahmoud, K.A. Korean Nuclear Society 2021 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.53 No.6

Mechanical moduli, such as Young's modulus (E), Bulks modulus (B), Shear modulus (S), longitudinal modulus (L), Poisson's ratio (σ) and micro Hardness (H) were theoretically calculated for (100-x)TeO2+x MgO glasses, where x = 10, 20, 30, 40 and 45 mol%, based on the Makishima-Mackenzie model. The estimated results showed that the mechanical moduli and the microhardness of the glasses were improved with the increase of the MgO contents in the TM glasses, while Poisson's ratio decreased with the increase in MgO content. Moreover, the radiation shielding capacity was evaluated for the studied TM glasses. Thus, the linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), transmission factor (TF) and half-value thickness (𝚫0.5) were simulated for gamma photon energies between 0.344 and 1.406 MeV. The simulated results showed that glass TM10 with 10 mol % MgO possess the highest LAC and varied in the range between 0.259 and 0.711 cm-1, while TM45 glass with 45 mol % MgO possess the lowest LAC and vary in the range between 0.223 and 0.587 cm-1 at gamma photon energies between 0.344 and 1.406 MeV. Furthermore, the BXCOM program was applied to calculate the effective atomic number (Zeff), equivalent atomic number (Zeq) and buildup factors (EBF and EABF) of the glasses. The effective removal cross-section for the fast neutrons (ERCSFN, ∑R) was also calculated theoretically. The received data depicts that the lowest ∑R was achieved for TM10 glasses, where ∑R = 0.0193 cm2 g-1, while TM45 possesses the highest ERCSFN where ∑R = 0.0215 cm2 g-1.

Evaluation of Hearing and Outer Hair Cell Function of Cochlea in Patients With Psoriatic Arthritis

        Mehmet Akdag,Derya Uçmak,Fazıl Emre Özkurt,Mehtap Bozkurt,Zeynep Meltem Akkurt,İsmail Topçu 대한이비인후과학회 2015 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.8 No.3

Objectives. The aim of this study was to investigate hearing and outer cells function in patients with psoriatic arthritis. Our investigation was a prospective case control study. Methods. A total of 31 psoriatic arthritis patients (62 ears) and 31 healthy control subjects (62 ears) were enrolled in the study. We investigated hearing changes of patients and controls via pure tone audiometry, speech discrimination scores, tympanometry, acoustic reflex, and transient product otoacoustic emission. Results. The mean age of psoriatic arthritis patients was 36.1±8.5 years (range, 14 to 62 years). The average age of the control group was 37.9±8.1 years (range, 16 to 62 years). There were statistically significant differences between pure tone audiometry in all frequencies and right and left emission at the 4.0 and 1.0 in psoriatic arthritis patients versus controls (P<0.05). This difference was evident, especially at high frequencies. There was no statistically significant difference between the ages and genders of the patient and control groups (P>0.05). Both audiological and otoacoustic emissions were not significantly different between right and left ear (P>0.05). Conclusion. Based on the audiological and otoacoustic findings; it is likely that the cochlear outer hair cells become subtly damaged in psoriatic arthritis patients, consequently leading to changes in hearing thresholds. These data suggest that it is important to screen psoriatic arthritis patients for hearing changes with otoacoustic emissions and audiologic tests regularly.
