<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The placenta is a crucial organ for the supply of oxygen and nutritional elements from mother to fetus. Several studies have reported evidence of the placental transfer of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Despite the importance of prenatal exposure to POPs, the transport process of POPs via the human placenta is not well understood. To investigate the transport processes of these contaminants and to assess the feasibility of the placenta as a non-invasive biological matrix, we measured 19 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 18 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and 24 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in placenta tissues. The total concentrations of PCBs, OCPs, and PBDEs in placental tissues ranged from 0.36 to 75.2 (median: 5.85) ng/g lipid wt, 1.37 to 250 (63.5) ng/g lipid wt, and 1.21 to 427 (11.7) ng/g lipid wt, respectively. The BDE 209 concentrations were higher than those reported in previous studies presumably because of the high consumption of deca-BDE technical mixtures in Korea. The concentrations of all of the POPs in placental tissues correlated significantly with each other, but BDE 209 concentration did not correlate with that of any other contaminants possibly because of different exposure sources and kinetics. Maternal age, body mass index, and parity were contributors to the accumulation of several POPs in the placenta. Partitioning ratios between maternal blood–placenta–cord blood showed that lower molecular-weight and hydrophobic POPs were preferentially transported from maternal blood to the placenta and that higher molecular-weight and hydrophobic contaminants tended to remain in placental tissues. Regression analysis showed significant relationships between the POP concentrations in multiple biological matrices such as maternal blood, placenta, cord blood, and meconium. These relationships suggest that the placenta can be used as a non-invasive matrix for biomonitoring prenatal exposure to several POPs.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> PCBs, OCPs, and PBDEs were measured in 108 placental tissues from the Korean women. </LI> <LI> Maternal age, body mass index, and parity were related to placental POP levels. </LI> <LI> Molecular weight and liposolubility influenced POP transport via the human placenta. </LI> <LI> The placenta may be a non-invasive matrix for biomonitoring of prenatal POP exposure. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Repigmentation of vitiligo using follicular unit extraction(FUE) technique

Vitiligo is a common skin pigmentary disorder which causes depigmented skin resulting from the loss of melanin. Vitiligo is not a life-threatening disease. It has a huge negative psychological and social impact on patients. A number of therapeutic options for repigmentation of the skin of patients with vitiligo are available including administration of corticosteroids, phototherapy, and calcineurin inhibitors. The aim of vitiligo treatment is to, ideally, obtain complete and permanent repigmentation towards the color of the surrounding normal skin. There are various surgical treatments available for vitiligo. Surgical modalities are indicated in stable vitiligo that doesn’t respond to medical treatment. These can be tissue grafting such as suction blister epidermal grafting, thin and ultrathin spilt-thickness skin grafting, minigrafting (punch grafting) and follicular grafting or cellular transplantation such as transplantation of cultured epidermis or, of non cultured basal cell layer enriched epidermal cell suspension. Treatment of vitiligo on hairy skin via the tedious procedure of hair follicle grafting has been carried out by few investigators. Herein we report on two cases of the follicular unit extraction(FUE) method.
A case of palisaded encapsulated neuroma of unusual site

In 1972, Reed described, for the first time, 44 cases of a distinctive cutaneous neural tumor that they designated “Palisaded encapsulated neuroma”. PEN is a benign, distinctive variant of cutaneous neuroma composed of normal nerve tissue. They described solitary, firm, nonpigmented, dome-shaped nodules that were primarily located on the face of patients between the age of 40 and 60 years. Clinically, PEN is a slowly growing, asymptomatic papule or nodule. Histologically it is composed of interlacing fascicles of Schwann cells, which label with S-100 protein, and numerous axons that stain positive for neurofilament protein. The lesion must be differentiated histologically from the neurofibroma, schwannoma, traumatic neuroma, and leiomyoma. We present patients with PEN of the acral skin (foot dorsum), a location rarely described in the literature. They had unusual presentation with pain and tenderness. Although PEN involving the foot is uncommon, when the lesion is a skin colored firm papule or nodule, the physician should include PEN in the differential diagnoses.
Hidradenoma papilliferum on the philtrum

Hidradenoma papilliferum is a slow-growing lesion derived from apocrine sweat glands that predominantly occurs in the perineal region, more often in women. When these tumors are not located in the anogenital area, they are termed in appropriately ectopic hidradenoma papilliferum. But apocrine glands are found in the axilla, scalp, nipple, face and eyelid margin so that the occurrence of hidradenoma papilliferum in these areas should not be considered ectopic. It occurs elsewhere in the body where apocrine glands are situated. The lesions are usually solitary, well-demarcated papules or nodules covered with normal skin, and are generally less than 10 mm in diameter. We describe here a case of hidradenoma papilliferum occurred in the philtrum.

Aims: HSG4112, a synthetic new chemical entity, is a first-inclass oral small molecule in clinical development for obesity. In preclinical studies, HSG4112 as mitochondrial function enhancer has been demonstrated to increase energy expenditure and decrease chronic low-grade inflammation, resulting in reduced adiposity and robust weight loss. As these therapeutic effects are highly relevant for the management of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), we aimed to compare the therapeutic effects of HSG4112 and semaglutide (GLP-1 receptor agonist) in a diet-induced obese (DIO) and biopsy-confirmed mouse model of NASH. Methods: Male C57BL/6JRj mice were fed AMLN diet high in trans-fat, fructose and cholesterol for 35 weeks. Only animals with liver biopsy-confirmed steatosis (score ≥2) and fibrosis (stage ≥F1) were included and stratified into treatment groups according to baseline body weight and liver collagen-1a1 deposition. DIO-NASH mice received vehicle (PO, QD), HSG4112 (50 or 100 mg/kg, PO, QD), or semaglutide (30 nmol/kg, SC, QD) for 10 weeks. Endpoints included within-subject changes in body composition, NAFLD Activity Score (NAS) and fibrosis stage as well as terminal quantitative liver histology and transcriptome analysis. Results: HSG4112 and semaglutide induced similar reductions in body weight (20%) and whole-body fat levels (10-12%) in DIO-NASH mice. These metabolic effects were accompanied by significantly reduced plasma levels of liver injury markers (ALT, AST, ALP). Notably, in contrast to semaglutide, HSG4112 did not reduce any food intake and improved NAS by a different mode of action. Accordingly, HSG4112 specifically attenuated lobular inflammation while semaglutide reduced steatosis severity. Both compounds significantly reduced fibrogenesis activity associated with suppressed stellate cell activation and lowered collagen mRNA expression. Conclusions: HSG4112 showed robust anti-obesity and anti- NASH efficacy, especially with reduced liver inflammation and fibrogenesis, in DIO-NASH mice with biopsy-confirmed liver pathology. While its efficacy was comparable to that of semaglutide, HSG4112 did not reduce food intake, further demonstrating its energy expenditure-enhancing effect. These findings suggest HSG4112 as a potent novel drug for the treatment of NASH.

이 글은 마조흐(Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch)의 『모피를 입은 비너스』에 대한 들뢰즈(Gilles Delueze)의 논의를 중심으로 『모피를 입은 비너스』가 갖는 의미와 매저키즘(masochism)의 특성을 분석한 글이다. 들뢰즈에 의하면 마조흐는 환상과 서스펜스를 효과적으로 이용한 작가이며, 사랑을 탈성화(脫性化: desexualizing) 시켜서 인간성의 역사에 성적인 의미를 부여하는 데 자신만의 독특한 재능을 발휘한 작가이다. 매저키즘에서 중요한 것은 계약과 여기에서 파생되는 유머와 극적 상황이다. 매저키스트들은 고통조차 쾌락으로 여기는 자가 아니라 욕망과 쾌락의 결속을 해체하는 자들이다. 쾌락이나 성, 욕망에 지배받지 않는 또 다른 인간의 탄생, 쾌락 없는 욕망의 잠재성을 지닌 인간의 탄생을 마조흐는 『모피를 입은 비너스』를 통해 창조해 냈다. 그런 의미에서 이 작품에서 보여준 매저키즘은 들뢰즈가 자신의 철학에서 주창했던 ‘기관 없는 신체’의 문학적 형상화라 할 수 있다. This article analyzes the meaning of “Venus in Furs” and characteristics of masochism with reference to the discourse of Gilles Deleuze on “Venus in Furs” of Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch. According to Deleuze, Masoch is an outstanding author in employing fantasy and suspense effectively and also in granting sexual meaning into the history of human nature by desexualizing love. What is important in Masochism is a contract, and humor and dramatic situation derived from the contract. Masochists are not those who regard pain as pleasure, but those who dissolve the unity between desire and pleasure. Masoch created a new human who is not under control of pleasure, sex or desire, but who has potentiality of pleasureless desire from his work “Venus in Furs”. In that sense, his masochism is literary embodiment of 'body without organs' which Deleuze argued in his philosophy.
