Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted from various building materials. The purpose of this study was to assess indoor VOCs in 2 new school buildings up to 6 months of occupancy. Sampling was conducted at 18 locations in the new buildings. Total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) concentrations were the highest before occupation and decreased over time. TVOC concentration exceeded regulatory limit of Korea for educational facilities guideline of 400 μg/ml until 3 months but complied in 6 months. Benzene and toluene concentrations were the highest right after occupation. Reduction rate of Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX) were lower than the other VOCs, although all VOCs decreased over time. TVOC concentrations were higher in rooms with carpet.Use of low emission materials is needed for acceptable indoor air quality in new building.
