An occupant analysis has been established for automobile crash environment, efforts are put on the reflection of the analysis of result onto the design process. Optimization is an excellent technology for the automobile design. However, the traditional gradient based optimization has many difficulties since the responses from the occupant analysis are not appropriate mathematically. Therefore, approximate or heuristic methods are utilized for the design. In this research, a response surface method (RSM) is applied for the design of parts involved in the occupant safety. Generally, an RSM generates response surfaces with selected design points. However, the selected algorithm makes better response surfaces as the iteration proceeds. An RSM in a commercial code is utilized by interfacing an in-house occupant analysis program called SAFE(Safety Analysis for occupant crash Environment). The design results are analyzed as opposed to those from the gradient base optimization and design of experiment (DOE).
