This paper presents performance investigation of a continuously variable ER(electro-rheological) damper operating with different ER fluids. A dynamic model of the damper is formulated by incorporating electric field-dependent Bingham properties of the ER fluids. The Bingham properties are experimentally obtained through an electro-viscometer. After analyzing damper performance through computer simulation, important model parameters of the ER damper are determined. The damping forces of the ER damper featuring two different ER fluids are experimentally evaluated by changing the intensity of the electric field. In addition, continuous controllability of the damping force is also demonstrated by implementing skyhook control algorithm.<br/> <br/>

This paper presents performance analysis and field test for ride comfortability of a vehicle with electrorheological(ER) damper. A dynamic model of the ER damper is formulated by the bond graph method incorporating eectric field-dependent Bingham properties of ER fluid obtained experimentally. Based on this model, the ER damper is designed and manufactured for a small-sized passenger vehicle. Subsequently. the vehicle with ER damper is modeled to analyze performance through computer simulation. Both simualtion and field test show that the proposed semiactive ER suspension system can provide superior ride comfortability to some conventional system.<br/>
