멀티버스를 활용한 오타쿠계 문화콘텐츠의 캐릭터 스토리텔링 사례분석

This paper explores how multiverse storytelling is applied in collectible mobile games, particularly in otaku culture games, and how it accentuates character narratives. Multiverse storytelling involves adopting a multiverse setting or revealing possibilities in different universes during the narrative development process. It enhances immersion by presenting diverse aspects of characters to the players. Due to its emphasis on characters, multiverse storytelling is actively utilized in otaku games. However, despite the expanding scale of otaku games globally, research on multiverse storytelling in this gaming genre is still lacking. The paper first examines the concept of multiverse and the characteristics of otaku content games. Subsequently, it analyzes the character “Zaira” from the otaku game “Lord of Heroes” using the “Character-Centric Storytelling Analysis Methodology.” The study then elucidates how multiverse storytelling varies and accentuates characters. Finally, it provides considerations for employing multiverse storytelling effectively. 본고는 멀티버스 스토리텔링이 수집형 모바일 게임에서 어떻게 적용되며 또 어떤 방식으로 캐릭터를 강조하는지 탐색해보고자 하였다. 멀티버스 스토리텔링이란 멀티버스 세계관을 설정으로 차용하거나 서사 전개 과정에서 다른 우주의 가능성을 드러내는 스토리텔링이다. 멀티버스 스토리텔링은 캐릭터의 다양한 모습을 수용자에게 제시함으로써 몰입을 유도하는데, 이런 까닭에 캐릭터가 강조되는 오타쿠 게임 내에서 적극적으로 사용된다. 그러나 오타쿠 게임의 규모가 국내외로 확장되고 있음에도 불구하고, 해당 분야 게임의 멀티버스 스토리텔링을 살피는 연구는 아직 수행된 바없다. 본고에서는 멀티버스의 개념과 오타쿠 콘텐츠 게임의 특징을 살핀 후, 멀티버스 스토리텔링을 활용한 오타쿠 게임인 <로드 오브 히어로즈>의 캐릭터 ‘자이라’를 ‘캐릭터-플레이어 중심의 스토리텔링 분석 방법론’을 통해 분석하도록 한다. 이후 멀티버스 스토리텔링이 어떻게 캐릭터를 변주하고 강조하는가에 대해 밝히며 멀티버스 스토리텔링을 활용할 시 고려해야 할 요소를 제시하였다.
