추리 소설 속 자아 찾기 -파트릭 모디아노의『어두운 상점들의 거리』의 경우

본 연구는 파트릭 모디아노의 『어두운 상점들의 거리』에서 주인공 기 롤랑의 추리 목적인 ‘잃어버린 과거’ 찾기가 지닌 의미를 파악하는 데 있다. 파트릭 모디아노의 대부분 작품들은 공통적으로 잃어버린 과거 즉, 정체성을 찾으려는 인물들과 사건들을 중심으로 전개된다는 특징을 지니고 있다. 1978년 공쿠르상을 수상한 『어두운 상점들의 거리』 역시 정체성과 사회적 혼란에 관한 접근을 시도한 작품으로 모디아노의 자전적 요소가 포함된 오토픽션으로 정의된다. 따라서 이 작품에서 주인공으로 등장하는 기롤랑의 생각과 행동에는 모디아노가 우리에게 보여주려고 했던 그의 견해가 포함되어 있는 것이다. 이 작품의 줄거리는 기억상실증에 걸린 탐정, 기 롤랑이 잃어버린 자신의 과거를 찾는 과정으로 요약된다. 마지막 장에서 기 롤랑이 “나는 마지막 시도를 해볼 필요가 있었다.즉 로마에 있는 나의 옛 주소, ‘어두운 상점들의 거리, 2번지’에 가볼 필요가 있었다.”라고 고백한 것처럼 그의 정체성 탐색은 결코 끝나지 않는다. 이처럼 끝나지 않는 결말을 통해 파트릭 모디아노는 우리에게 정체성 탐색이 뫼비우스의 띠처럼 순환적 구조를 지니고 있음을 보여준다. 이는 주인공 기 롤랑에게만 해당되는 사항이 아니다. 이 작품의 궁극적 목표는 도시 즉, 사회의 발달로 인해 인간의 정체성이 점차 소외되고 있는 상황에서 개인의 정체성 탐구가 끊임없이 이어져야 한다는 점 그리고 이 노력들이 합쳐져야만 우리의 현재가 가치 있다는 점을 보여주기 위한 것이다. This study is aimed at understanding the meaning of the search for the "lost past" of Guy Roland, the hero of the 『Rue des Boutiques Obscures』 written by Patrick Modiano. Most of the works of the author unfolds around characters and events searching for the identity. Furthermore 『Rue des Boutiques Obscures』 which won the Prix Goncourt in 1978 has been defined as a self-fiction including autobiographical elements of Modiano. Thus the thinking and behavior of the hero, Guy Roland, include the views that Modiano wants to show us. This novel is about Guy Roland, a detective who lost his memory, looking for his lost past. However, it was not a complete identity that acquired as a result of his reasoning. As Guy Roland said in the last page “I had to try one last approach, go to my old address in Rome, the Obscure Street Stores 2”, the searching for his identity was never completed. Through this never-ending story, Patrick Modiano indicates that the searching for the identity has a cyclic structure as the M bius strip. But it is not just an issue for Guy Roland. The purpose of this novel is that the individual searching for the identity needs to be continued continuously and to show that our present is valuable when all efforts together in a situation that the man``s identity was gradually alienated.
