During the lifetime of an internal combustion engine. carbon deposits are formed at various locations. In diesel engines. especially carbon deposits in intake manifold leads to an increase in the emission. Moreover durability problems and deterioration of engine efficiency can also arise. A detailed theory on the mechanisms of carbon deposit formation, considering the physical and chemical effects, is presented. In this study, computational fluid dynamics(CFD) was performed to investigate the effect of EGR gas to accumulation of carbon deposits according to different configuration of intake manifold. From these investigations. deposit phenomena. deposit compositions, and countermeasure of deposit reduction in intake manifold will be demonstrated. By understanding how deposits are formed and which the influencing parameters are. this knowledge can be transferred to different locations in the intake systems.
