Research for idling rattle noise is one of the most important issues for noise reduction in diesel engine vehicles. Although many researchers reported optimization methods for clutch torsional characteristics to reduce the idle gear rattle, only a few researchers take into account the clutch damper as a design parameter. This paper investigates an erratic noise during idling condition in the drive train. Through the theoretical and experimental analysis, it is concluded that the erratic noise is mainly due to the resonance in the clutch. This paper also describes a design modification for the pre-damper clutch to remove the erratic noise.<br/>
