Diesel engine powered passenger cars and light commercial vehicles are gaining increasing attentions from most of European countries and some other countries such as Japan and Korea. One of the most important technological advances in these recent move is attributed to the inovation of high pressure direct fuel injection system (FIE) which can be further represented by so called "Common Rail" FIE system. Another very dominant trend of the high speed direct injection (HSDI) engines on the market demand is the variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) which can overcome the typical weak point of most of turbocharged engines.<br/> In this paper some aspects of VGT parmaters and the fuel injection variables are discussed to see their potential for further improvement and refinement of HSDI engine perfonnance and emissions.

Increasing demands for clean air and better fuel consumption have led to the greater penetration of diesel passenger cars equipped with diesel particulate filters. In order to drastically reduce the particulate emission in all the engine operating conditions Catalyzed particulate filter has been developed for serial passenger cars. The exhaust gas temperature required for the filter regeneration was found to be achievable in all driving situation through a smart management of up to five multiple injections and air mass without an unacceptable increase of fuel consumption or noticeable change in vehicle drivability. The features and performance of the control system and engine, aftertreatment developed are presented in this paper.

Diesel engine has been attractive for its high thermal efficiency. As the CO₂ reduction is strongly requested. diesel engine is considered one of the most realistic solutions in the transport system. However, clean diesel engine cannot be developed without advanced technologies to comply with the stringent emission law. Therefore, currently much of researches are focused on how to reduce the diesel engine emission in the engine itself as well as after-treatment. Although new techniques are effective to the emission reduction, their application is carefully approached. This is because the new techniques have positive and negative effects in terms of fuel and cost economy. In this paper, several techniques are presented and their characteristic behaviors are discussed for the small displacement volume passenger diesel engine. Then, emission potential is estimated with the DOE optimization for the next staged regulation such as EU5.

A new process was proposed for developing the idle stability under cold starting of passenger car HSDI diesel engine. Injection parameters were successfully optimized for the starting time and the idle stability of 1.5 liter HSDI diesel engine at -25℃ through this process which includes the DFSS experimental method. The THC exhaust emission was measured during cold start and utilized for index of white smoke.
