In this paper, we propose a machine vision system for automatically performing the conventional manual shoe soles measurement process and verify its practical effectiveness through various experiments. Shoe soles are injection-molding products produced by injecting rubber materials into molds. There are many types and sizes of shoe models. The nature of rubber material, which is deformed depending on environmental factors such as temperature and humidity, causes many problems in automatic dimension measurement using a machine vision system. In this paper, we analyze the factors to be considered to automate the measurements for various types of shoe sole dimensions (longitudinal and lateral), and propose automatic dimension vision measurement methods for the analyzed problems. We verify the accuracy and consistency of the proposed vision measurement system by creating a flat shoe sole model, and also verify through experiments that the system has valid accuracy at various positions. Finally it is shown that the proposed method can be applied to the real production process by comparing the measured values at various positions on the moving conveyor belt with its actual dimensions.
