As a part of the project for obtaining acrylic fibers with optimum structure and proper-ties based on the critical coagulation bath composition (CCBC) for the polyacrylonitrile/HNO₃/H₂0 spinning system. The critical points at different spinning conditions have been investigated rom the variation of the maximum take-up speed with the coagulation bath composition(CBC). Then, the apparent diffusion coefficients of both solvent and nonsolvent at two different CBC's below and above the critical composition at a given spinning condition have been estimated from coagulation experiments according to modified Terada's treatment on quasi-binary diffusion in order to study the effect on the changes in structure and properties of the resulting fibers. In addition, the comparisons of the physical properties (mechanical properties, volume porosity, dye absorption, and morphology) between the fibers obtained at two kinds of bath compositions below and above the CCBC have been made in view of the variations in diffusion coefficients of both solvent and nonsolvent.

From the previous studies performed on the Polyacrylonitrile(PAN)/HNO₃(soIvent)/H₂0(nonsolvent) spinning system based on the critical coagulation bath composition(CCBC),it has been found that the bath composition(CBC) has markedly affected the structure and properties of the resulting fibers, and furthermore that fibers obtained from the higher CBC's than the CCBC had better structure and properties compared to the case of the lower CBC's as a result nf retarded phase transitions at higher CBC's Hence, in this paper, the effects of the CBC around the CCBC on structure and mechanical properties of drawn PAN fibers formed have been investigated by varying the draw ratio. Namely, such physical properties as density, dyeing absorption, birefringence, dynamic viscoelas tic behavior, wide angle X-ray diffraction, degree of orientation, and specific stress have been measured on drawn fibers spun at two different coagulation conditions, i.e. CBC = 35 and 41.8% corresponding to before and after the CCBC, respectively.

In order to elucidate the coagulation mechanism for the polyacrylonitrile/HNO₃ (solvent)/H₂0(nonsolvent) wet-spinning system, the effects of the coagulation bath temperature and composition (content of solvent m the bath) on the coagulation behavior, and hence structure and properties of the resulting(proto and drawn) fibers have been investigated prior to finding out the optimum(critical) bath composition. Apparent diffusion coefficients of solvent at different coagulation conditions have been estimated from diffusing-out experiments during the coagulation step using Takeda's simplified model based on quasi-binary, equimolar diffusion. The changes in structure and properties of the fibers caused by the variation of the diffusion coefficient at different coagulation conditions have been confirmed from the experiments on mechanical properties, dye sorption, and morphological structure of the fibers.
