동아시아적 근대의 문제와 사설시조(辭說時調)의 장르지향

본고는 조선후기 사설시조를 대상으로 서양적 근대에 대한 대안적 모색을 시도하였다. 사설시조는 가사·판소리와 함께 조선후기를 대표하는 장르로 이중에서도 ‘근대/도시’와 가장 밀접히 관련되어 있다. 사설시조의 미학적 특징은 애초에 그 시학이 지녔던 입체성과 개방성이 조선후기라는 역사적 조건과 만났을 때 구체화되었다. 최근까지 사설시조에 대한 근대성 탐색은 봉건성 비판과 평민의식 탐색에 집중되어 왔으나 본고에서는 사설시조에 나타난 비서구적 주체와 이 주체가 구현하는 중층성과 입체성에 주목하였다. 이 연구의 핵심내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사설시조의 부드럽고 온유한 하위주체는 서구적인 자기중심적 주체와 달랐으며, 이 점에서 대안적 주체의 가능성을 보여주었다. 사설시조에서 찾아볼 수 있는 여성적 연민과 배려, 낮고 온유한 목소리는 자기중심성을 지양하고 개개의 주체를 긍정함으로써 주체들간의 대등한 관계를 승인하고 있다. 둘째, 그 가능성은 조선후기 한양의 도시적 다양성을 바탕에 둔 것으로 ‘다양한 탈근대적 가능성의 원형’을 시사한다. 조선 전기에 사대부들이 향유하였던 사설시조는 조선후기에 이르러 중인 이하의 계층이 활발하게 향유하는 장르가 되었으며 이 과정에서 중세와 근대이행기의 인식소를 충실히 담지하게 되었다. 사설시조는 상업의 발달이 가져온 도시문화와 유흥문화의 요구를 적절히 받아들이면서 텍스트의 중층성과 도시적 다양성을 확보하였다. 사설시조가 획득한 입체성 내지 중층성은 문명사적 전환기의 다양한 요소들을 내포할 수 있는 시적 공간을 마련하고 허용하였다. 이는 동아시아 도시의 근대성과 내재적 발전의 증명을 넘어서는 것으로, ‘근대 너머’의 향방을 찾고자 하는 작업이었다. This paper aims to find an alternative to Western modernity in the late Chosun朝鮮’s Saseol-Sijo. Saseol-Sijo is a representative genre of the late Chosun Dynasty along with Pansori, and is also the one most closely related to the modern and the city. The aesthetic characteristics of Saseol-Sijo were specified when the openness of the genre met the historical conditions of the late Chosun Dynasty. Recent studies of Saseol-Sijo have focused on the criticism of feudalism and the quest for the sense of the common people, yet this paper reassesses the genre in terms of complexity and multilayeredness of non-Western subjectivity it represents. The results are as follows: first, the meek subordinate of Saseol-Sijo is different from the Western self-centered subject, revealing the possibility of an alternative subject. The feminine compassion and consideration, low and gentle voice in the genre allow for equal relationships among the subjects by rejecting the self-centeredness. Second, that possibility was based on the urban diversity of Hanyang漢陽 in the late Chosun. Saseol-Sijo earned its textual multilayeredness in the process of accepting the demands of urban culture through commercial development. The variety Saseol-Sijo obtained created a poetic space that contained various elements of the cultural transition. This paper attempts to prove the modernization and intrinsic development of East Asian cities, and aims to find the direction ‘beyond modernity.’
